  • This video is of me carving a simple bird from cherry wood using a Foredom rotary tool and various burrs. I've made a bunch of these during this period of "social distancing." They're a good way to use up small offcuts, they look cool, and they're fun to make.

    I've never seen sanding disc snap on & off so easily. What are they?

      The sanding discs are called Magnum Flexible Plastic Sanding Discs and they are made by E.C. Moore in Michigan. They're intended use is for jewelry and dental applications but they work great on small wood carvings. I haven't used them in a long time because they became scarce during the pandemic. I learned just this week that they've become available again though. Moore makes paper backed discs too but they tend to fly apart on me.

    Is there an advantage to using burrs over whittling ? Also - am I correct that the "end grain" is on the sides of the bird when you first cut the shape?

      End grain is the wood surface that is perpendicular to the the wood fibers. If you cut a tree and look at the rings, you're looking at end grain. It's usually tougher to cut and sand. For a project like this, the only real advantage to power carving over whittling is speed. It's a little easier on the hands too if you're carving very hard wood.

    Super newbie here. Can I ask where you got your pattern or at least approx. finished size it is?

    • @jjwoodsculpture3313
      @jjwoodsculpture3313  3 года назад

      It's probably around 4 or 5 inches tail to beak. I didn't really have a pattern, per se. I sketched out the rough profile myself then cut it out on a bandsaw before carving.

      I dug up the file and realized I actually did draw a top view as well. I just never used it. Feel free to use it. imgur.com/a/XBpEHMY

    Are these dremal tools?

      Sorry for the late reply, but I'm using a Foredom flexshaft tool. It's basically a bigger more powerful Dremel. www.foredom.net/product-category/flex-shaft-tools/flex-shaft-kits-sets/
