As someone who works in fine dining and event catering, weddings are absolutely a scam. They’re so overpriced. Please keep having them. They’re the only reason I get to pay rent.

Haha, true. And your rent's pretty safe, since catering is probably the last thing people want to skimp on. You can easily skip live music or the professional photographer to lower your costs - no one complains because you make a Spotify playlist and I'm sure you have at least one friend who can take an ok photograph. But everyone with a working brain realises that making all of your own food for an entire wedding and serving it would be a stress-inducing logistical nightmare that just goes on and on for the entire evening.

I have been to some awful weddings, but they all worth it for my aunt and uncles; they rented out a top floor of an airplane museum because they’re both pilots, the ceremony was only like 20 minutes, they immediately proceeded to have a lightsaber duel with dramatic star wars music, there wasn't a lot of people and for basically the entire night we just danced to fun 80s songs with the family and explored the museum :)

I've been to a few weddings now. They're horribly boring. But I went to one this past summer that was absolutely amazing. The bride and groom really wanted it to be a party for the guests. Ceremony was 20 minutes. The rest was open buffet, a dance floor, and some games. There was a place to put coats and a change of clothes if you didn't want to stay in your formal attire. There was a quiet room if anyone got overwhelmed. I have so much anxiety around social situations and had a great time.

My wife and I had a COVID wedding and honestly it was the greatest fucking thing, because it gave us an excuse to have exactly the wedding we wanted without having to cave to the wants of family. I haven't finished the video yet but one of the worst parts of having a wedding yourself is your immediate families' demands, including all the people (extended family you see once or less per year, family friends or otherwise) they expect you to invite. And the fact you apparently are not allowed to only invite the cousins you're somewhat close to and not the rest. So yeah we didn't have to fulfil any requests, our dress code was casual, everyone got personal make-your-own fajitas (and TONS of other food), we did fancy donuts instead of cake and the entire thing was only 4 hours long. I think we did a pretty damn good job all things considered.
Edit: I also have to share the best wedding I've ever been to (other than my own) that was a friend's wedding at a beautiful canoeing resort, and it was viking themed, and we were encouraged to dress up as vikings, so you bet your ass we dressed up as vikings. I have never been so comfortable and had so much fun at another person's wedding before.

All the wedding traditions of other countries can be condensed into one. First, the Chinese bride is going to cry with her female relatives/friends, then as day of the wedding comes she can finally stop crying cause some Indian friends decided to steal her soon-to-be husband's shoes and demanded him to hand them money as a joke, then the South Korean bros come in, swoop the groom of his feet, and start beating that same feet. I’ve always hated weddings, I’ve always hated a lot of social occasions! Which makes me so goddamn grateful that my stepmom understood how much weddings suck when she married my dad because she actually made it kickass.
10 minute reception, no dress code besides the groomsman and bridesmaids (even then we got to choose which version of the suits and dresses we liked the best, no need to match,) literally just a dad barbecue for most of the time and you could leave whenever you want. It was also just in a cute park, didn’t even have to rent a single thing and only the cool family and friends were invited. Minimal effort, do whatever you want type event. Hi, I was a wardrobe consultant for 3 years.
Renting is better _only_ if you think you’re only gonna wear it once or twice within the next 3 years.
If you have a few weddings, or some sick elderly relatives, or are nearing graduation, don’t waste your money renting.
Just buy a $300-$500 suit from a place like Jos A Bank, Men’s Wearhouse, or something.
You dip under $300 and it’s gonna be cheap polyester, itchy, and not fit right.
But like $300 and maybe $30 in tailoring and it’ll be comfortable, look good, and last you several _years_ if you take care of it.

Weird wedding traditions from around the world: Poland's edition
In my country we have a tradition called "Brama" which means "Gate" and its whole point is for the [future] newlyweds to buy out their [future] spouse from the community.
Most commonly it's neighbors and some more distant acquaintances, close enough to know when youre getting married but not close enough to get an invite. In it's most basic form its a "gate" made by tying up a ribbon or a string on the way between bride's and groom's houses and church/wedding venue. It can be more decorative and elaborate, but it can be just a string hung between two lamp posts. The gate is guarded by the neighbors and acquaintances and the bride or the groom have to either pass some challenges or pay a "ransom" to them, to be allowed to pass - usually it's wine/vodka for adults and cady for kids. Basically anyone can make the gate, so it can be as little as one or none and as much as a dozen, multipled by both houses [since it's customary to start the wedding from your parents house], so best men and bridesmaids are expected to have several bottles of alcohol and a big bag of candy ready, just in case.
It can be annoying, because it can sometimes happen that some local drunks make one, even if they dont know the couple, but it's cutomary that the best man is supposed to negotiate the terms of the "ransom", to not spoil the day for the [future] newlyweds, if the gate keepers are more pushy and a nuisance.

A marriage is literally the most intimate relationship you can have with one other human being, and yet everyone else is involved with the 2 people kissing, for some reason? Then my dad had to drop money on the right kind of suit even though he had other suits that still looked nice. I was asked to as well, but didn’t comply. If you want me there, i’ll wear something affordable, thank you. It never even came up. But the money is so ridiculous. You NAILED IT!

Weddings are only horribly boring if you lack connection to the other people attending the wedding.
When my best friend got married, you bet your ass the wedding was fkcing AMAZING. And not because they arranged it better than any other wedding - it was the same deal, and I'm sure there were plenty of bored guests there who were too disconnected from everyone else to have a good time - but I personally had a blast mingling and partying with my friend's family (who I hadn't seen in a few years and was excited to reconnect with) and all her friends that I either knew from before or met at the hen do (and we're all still friends to this day). At the same time, it was fun to see what my friend's now-husband's family and friends were like, because when else would I get that opportunity? I arrived a day early to help out with preparations, so I'd gotten to know some of them before the wedding even started, which again made the wedding day more fun. KNOW YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, and I promise weddings will be a lot less boring for you.
It makes perfect sense for the bride and groom to want to gather their beloved ones in the same spot, for once in their life, and have them meet and mingle. When else is that ever going to happen? It's actually a pretty cool concept. Shame weddings have gotten so expensive though. I feel like if you scaled the whole thing down cost-wise and focused on the actual point of a wedding - the joining of two families, and two friend groups - you'd have laid good groundwork for a wedding. After that it IS up to the guests to be good sports.

I had a small ceremony with like, four family members (all were my spouse's family members) at a small church. We even paid for the ceremony on the same day. We then went to Red Lobster for a wedding dinner. Infinitely better than having an expensive wedding with hundreds of people.

My friend was stressed about everyone looking at her on the day. On the day.. she was still stressed about it. For me, I saw myself as a symbol. People werent looking at me, they were looking at "the bride", so I didn't feel nervous about it. I just wish I had written a list of who to talk to in order so I didn't get stressed about being rude/snobbing guests

Im in the process of planning a wedding, and my god are the prices insane!!!! I had a venue tell me that their food and beverage minimum was 15k-24k! Im only having 40 people at my wedding, and im not spending 15k for them to eat. Then i had another venue that was reasonably prices, but i had to pay a rental fee for each individual table and chair that i needed. Luckily, i found a venue that is a little out of the budget that i had in mind, but its worth it after the headache of everything else. It's 5,800 in total. I have access to their mansion, their lawn and gardens, and their barn, and i have it all day from 8am-12 midnight.

4:50 If I recall correctly, the Tujia crying tradition is to show how sad the bride's family is to let their daughter go. It's supposedly incredibly taboo if you're a woman and don't cry during the wedding.
Additionally, a bride's intelligence and virtue is kind of determined by how well she can sing while crying.

My Mom got in a fight with my grandparents because they didn’t like that she was living with my Dad out of wedlock, it was so bad that they weren’t even takings She was complaining about all of this bullshit to my Dad, who was like “well shit, you wanna just go down to the courthouse tomorrow?” And they did, and they DID NOT invite or tell my Grandparents, they had to find out weeks later from my aunt. It was a spite wedding, but it’s been 38 years and they’re still together and in love, so who cares? It just makes me laugh so hard, I guess weeks later my Grandma called and apologized and they ended up throwing my parents a gigantic party at their farmhouse with all the family, friends, potluck dinner, an open catered bar, a Led Zeppelin cover band, etc etc, and my parents got all these gifts and it was a fucking banger I guess(I’ve seen pictures, heard the stories, it was epic). That’s what I want honestly, let’s do the boring stuff alone, fill out some papers, pay a fee and *then* go celebrate with your people! Like traditional weddings don’t make any goddamn sense to me…..

I’m from New Orleans, and while the wedding ceremony basically goes down the same way, and honestly so does the reception lol, but we have a tradition towards the last section of the reception where second line music (carnival/Mardi Gras) plays, and an entire band + Mardi Gras Indians come in and we all start dancing and waving handkerchiefs in the air while the bride and groom hold decorated umbrellas in the air. You can probably find videos of it on RUclips lol
Edit: We also do the same for funeral repasts but we walk down a few blocks outside with the band while dancing

We had a court house wedding during Covid. Then a few days later we had a reception at our house for close friends. Big weddings tend to get hijacked by the loudest narcissist that you "have to invite".
After licensing, fees, cake, food, and rings, I think we spent about $1500. Some of my friends are getting married now and want to have a small wedding, but they don't have the guts to say "no" to their families demands/ "wishes".

Casual clothes, but everyone gets a hat that they are encouraged to wear. Fewer than 30 people.

I'm Turkish. My cousin got married this week and we did 2 fun traditions when the groom came to the brides house to pick her up. First is one or two younger (preferably teenagers or children) female relatives lock the bride into a room and stall the groom with random excuses questions conversations or tricks (we guided him to the wrong room a couple times) and eventually signal to the groom that he needs to pay to get the door to open by doing a gesture as we tell him the door is stuck or the bride isn't ready yet. We also broke a ceramic vase filled with coins chocolate and candy after the bride and groom (The original tradition involves gold instead of regular coins). I'm not sure but my family told me this one comes from the Balkans. Both traditions are pretty fun especially for children.

I live in New Zealand and weddings are more low-key here. I get the impression that American weddings are more of a status thing, an expression of wealth. We still had an engagement party, ceremony and seated reception with way too much alcohol (we had crates left over), but the end cost was about 8.5k. The wedding tax is more accurately expectations tax.

You obviously haven’t gone to a good wedding. I’m currently planning my wedding, the ceremony is going to be 25 minutes long with close family and bridal party(outside not religious). Then the reception is going to be at my grandparents cabin compound ( it’s like a lil neighborhood of my family’s 5 cabins in Montana) we’re getting a buffet style taco bar, free booze, free🍃. We’re having a wedding painter and disposable cameras at each table instead of a photographer. Also I’m only going to have 65 guests. And I handmade all of my wedding invitations ($30 spent at hobby lobby and micheals) and the dress code is more casual like a button up with dressy lookin pants and a tie. And my bridesmaids all bought their own dresses that they would wear again (kind of just went with pick a dress any shade of green except neon) and my bouquet is going to be mostly greenery with minimal flowers. Just got engaged 3 months ago and everything is already planned and underway and the wedding isn’t until next august lol.

Yeah, wedding suck. Unless ur an oblivious innocent kid who's going to a close relative's wedding n gets to be the "flower girl" (put it in quotes because I'm a guy).
A story about my experience with being a wedding guest/part of the wedding kinda:
As a 6 yr old, I was the flower girl for my uncle's wedding. I had absolutely no clue about any of what was going on but I, being the autistic, innocent, way too outgoing thanks to mimicry, n untreated ADHD ridden child I was, gave a surprise speech during the reception when ppl were making speeches n they started asking if anyone else wanted to make a speech. I am still mortified by that fact as I have been ever since I learned social awareness. The fact that my speech was genuinely a good speech that got lots of very pleasantly surprised reaction from the drunk n annoyed adults is a miracle. Especially since it included a large majority of the extremely white side of my family that don't tend to like my mom, me, or my siblings. The other half of the family there were basically total strangers to me but were definitely surprised by my decisions as well. Just imagine it for a moment. I'm sure u can understand the absolute horror I feel knowing I did that, as well as the amazement I have at how everyone recalls the speech. I don't remember a word I said, n I barely remember any of that night cuz I was 6, but I do know just how frequently my family brings it up when discussing good things about different parts of the family or different events. The frequency makes it clear how impressive of a speech it was. The only times I made speeches were that once n when I was in a truancy meeting with ppl from the school I went to at the time n was absolutely DONE with the woman that was trying to get me taken from my family. I blew up on her with perfect reason and clear wording. Probably the most clear I've ever made a point in my life. N my mom compared it to the speech I gave when I was little afterward. So if that's comparable, then that wedding speech I made was epic n very much should not have been coming from a 6 yr old 😅. I'm far more of an introvert now, but I made that second speech after my social awareness started existing so I guess I have that superpower in my subconscious somewhere. I can give epic speeches when I really need to. Til then, Imma keep sticking to txts 😅.

the only wedding ive been 2 was in detroit. we lost our reservation at our hotel, completely missed the actual ceremony (thank god, i was unmedicated w adhd at the time i would have cried) so we only went to the reception. the cake was mid, i didnt know anyone there (the wedding was for one of my mom's coworkers), and once we were ready to leave at like midnight we realized our car was out of gas & we spent the next 3 hrs walking around trying to find a gas station in downtown detroit at midnight.
