I know Hahira because my brothers went to the Georgia Sheriffs boy's ranch there back in the 1960s. They taught my brothers how to be self-sufficient, how to garden, how to build things and put responsibility on their shoulders. It was a working ranch and an excellent place for boys to go when their family was going through rough times. They were only there about a year but it left a permanent, positive impact on them. I may not be able to pronounce ALL the names, but i am so blessed to have been born in Georgia...

For what it's worth, you can tell what part of the state somebody's from by the way they say Vidalia. Also, I grew up in Lithonia, they absolutely got that one flat-out wrong! The lady who said "Yes it is!", was right. Granted, there are people who say it that way, but generally they're not from GA. And Senoia (also lived there)! There are about three accepted ways to say Senoia, but the one they have isn't one I've even heard before. Dacula is wrong, too.

As a native Floridian, one of my favorite jokes is about the Yankee husband and wife who came down to visit Disney World. They come into Kissimmee and get into an argument on how to pronounce the name. He said it's pronounced KISS-i-me and the wife said, it's Kiss-I-mee. The argument goes on and and gets more heated until they drive into a hamburger place to get lunch. They go up to the counter, still arguing and the man finally said to the boy taking their order, "Young man, my wife and I have been arguing for over an hour about how to pronounce the name of this place. Would you please just say, very slowly, how to pronounce the proper name of this place?" The kid looks startled, leans forward and says, "Bur-ger King".

I've gotten some funny looks, but it is what it is. Most of the folks around here couldn't pronounce "El Cajon," "Encinitas," "Jamul," "Jacumba" or "Tecate" so I'd say we're pretty even.
