Deal Signed for DRDO AIP integration on kalvari class submarines

- In a major boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, Fuel Cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system of DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) will soon be fitted onboard INS Kalvari. An agreement was signed between senior officials of NMRL and Naval Group France in Mumbai on January 23, 2023 to extend cooperation to enter into the detailed design phase for integration of indigenous AIP in the Kalvari class submarines. As part of the agreement, Naval Group France will certify the AIP design for integration in the submarines.

Finally ! One of the most critical naval technology, which is Developed indegeniously. Will be integrated on Indian Navy's submarine. It will increase the endurance of our disel electric submarines.

LI has longer endurance than alkaline battery. Phosphoric acid fuel cell is a niche technology with no parallel in the world. The endurance of a submarine in underwater may go upto 45 days. Congrats DRDO and L&T for the spectacular Achievement.

Can anyone realistically estimate the endurance of an AIP fitted Kalveri class.? Greater than 4 weeks ? Whilst patrolling in full operational deployment configuration.?
Probably 14 to 15
I’ve always said it - A 3+ ton class AIP fitted SSK has no match.. The adversary will begin fearing silence :) that’s too much psychological damage to live with in war.

Yes Fuel cells technology is unique for that... But complex to develop. If you are successful, it's the most rewarding.

There is no need to carry liquid oxygen thus reducing cost and complexity both....
Future lies with small, compact nuclear reactors. It is a critical technology which has to be developed.
difference between ATGM & MANPAD ?
ATGM is Anti Tank Guided Missile example NAG and Konkours while MANPAD is Man Portable Air Defence Missile example Igla S and Stinger.

New work order has been given although no new orders there but I guess mazgaon dock making one additional submarine from own funds for this purpose

Direct fuel cell electric banao na, Toyota mirai ki tarah system wala. Directly replace diesel engine with hydrogen fuel cell electricity generator and connect it with li-ion battery pack.

Is this similar to the deal signed with DRDO ten years ago? Which delayed our submarine projects for a decade? Why do we think that DRDO will be successful this time and not cause another decade of delay? Why not ask Tata/L&T/Kalyani ityadi to produce an AIP to compete with faltu DRDO?
This AIP should be on new production submarines. The plan to cut the almost new Kalvari submarine from between and install these AIPs is stupid and very expensive. It will also ruin the integrity and reliability of the submarine. Let the current recently made ones be as it is.

If our AIP is ready for integration on Kalvari class then why is the Indian Navy asking for a Foreign AIP under P75I?
Better to have our own AIP installed in those Subs as well. Before P75I subs go for sea trials, we would have our own AIP Sea proven on Kalvari Class subs.
Not tested indian navy did not had any sub to test it

IN never made that kinda statement in public... If they havedl signed the deal for DRDO AIP on the latest class of subs currently with IN, then I think all those news bits were targeted propaganda.
