- A quick look at Dave's Advantest R6142 Voltage and Current Source.
Can it be used as a current reference for the uCurrent?
A look at the stability with temperature and time, and absolute calibration of the unit.
Is it an ebay score, or ebay junk?

Nice unit. "Just a quick video". LOL. :-)
Tear that thing open!
Please do crack it open for us Dave =-)
Aren't you tempted to get rid of that offset?
Interesting video! I love the Agilent meter and it's awesome logging functions. Damn would I love to get one of those...
Another great video. Was expecting to see you using that swanky new to you HP 41 though!
Cant wait any longer to see what is inside.
Thanks for the video Dave! I'd be really happy to see a teardown and a block diagram. I'm curious as to the method used to digitally select output with such consistency. I'm sure it's quite elementary to most but it's a weak spot for me trying to imagine the whole system.
more teardowns please dave, take everything apart :D
Bring down the walls! :P
Nah, teardowns are pretty worthless. More theory and projects!
a teardown tuesday on that would be awesome!
Tear it down when you have time, Dave!
before they're called advantest, they used Takeda Riken and some models continue become early models of advantest products; hence some early advantest products do bear model name beginning with "TR"; they changed it on later advantest products.
Great ebay find, waiting for the teardown.
I have an even older 1987 Wavetek Data Multimeter Model 52 that on the diode test function has 5 selectable current sources 1mA 100uA 10uA 1uA and 100nA.
I just love this Wavetek bench top multimeter is a 32k count with a lot of futures is better than most modern multimeter and only uses 500mW that is an important fact since I live offgrid.
Letting you know. Teardown request. :-)
I've been here since EP 10-20 and just realized I've never said hello. Shame on me!
Love your videos, Dave.
Oh, and hi btw. :)
First always fun stuff dave :)
Nice Casio you've got there @ 9:15. I've got the fx-61F Electrical Formula one, they are quite collectable now :)
I have that too around the lab, it pops up in videos.
Of course we want a teardown !!!! :)
Dave, could you possibly make a tutorial on taking a ATX power supply and make it variable or a good bench power supply? I seen a guy do it by just soldering some wires to a pot and got 1-17v of variable voltage. These ATX psu's are are everywhere and would be great to make a vid on. I want one to at least have 13-14v of output
I agree, it'd be nice to see an atx conversation introduction, maybe based on lm317, actually, if you grap the datasheet for that and scroll to the example circuits, they provide you with exactly that.
Not recommended!!! Buy a cheapo $50 bench Supply with Current Limiting.
These things can put out many many amps, so short a rail on your DUT and BANG! If 5As makes a big pop and spark, imagine what 60A will do?
If you must do it, put in a 1A Polyfuse, and a big 5A slow-blow in series...
As for voltage, most of these are Flyback converters, so changing the Feedback Voltage (look up the datasheet of the main converter for the FB/Adj Pin. There will be a potdown going from the output to ground, so put a pot in series with the top resistor going from the output to the pin) will change all of the output voltages. Wouldn't recommend it, though. Post on the EEVBlog forum for more info.
Not to mention the voltage ripple on them is massive as the CPU etc normally have their own tight-tolerance Regulators.
DusteDs Stuff Many tutorials for that online includes shorting a specific pin to ground. There are many cases of ATX PSU's gone bad because they are not built for this.
A few quick notes while I'm watching the video - Advantest don't make bench test gear any more, their current product line is all ATE testing. A company called ADCMT took over the benchtop/handheld T&M line, but the tech support has taken a complete nose-dive since the Advantest days.
Yokogawa do a couple of units similar to the R6142 too -- the 7651 is the "old dog", they tend to suffer from worn (bouncy!) buttons when they age. The GS200 is the current replacement for it. They're pretty obscure bits of kit, I'd never seen one until I started at my current employer.
This is my tear down request, please approve, thank!
Would be awesome to see how this thing works inside.
very cool
The 4wire would just be for the voltage generation wouldn't it?
I just got mine and found that you can directly type in a number with the keypad after pressing the green "DATA" button. (12:15)
Do a tear down :)
Right now you tease us lol :D
Please pull this one apart and see if you can find a calibration pot somewhere to get rid of that small offset, that'd be great
but anyway, have fun pulling it apart, regardless
Want to see teardown! :)
Take it apart Dave!!!
I wouldn't mind a teardown.
I would love to see 20 years old test gear teardown.
Lets Take it apart !!!!
Dave - manuals are on ADCMT's website: www.adcmt.com/en/download/manual/ You have to register to access them, which is why they don't appear in a Google search. Maybe try www.adcmt.com/cgi-bin/auth/manual/en/dllist.cgi which might get you past the email requirement.
Stunningly, there's both an operation manual and a maintenance manual there! O.O
Nice cliffhanger Dave, or is this a currenthanger ;-)
Dave you dirty tease, Make a tear down!
Teardown!
"Half a bee's dick" is a pretty small tolerance! lol Thx for your sharing Dave. ;)
...and teardown it goes =)
Need teardown please!
We never got a teardown? D:
Tear it down! Tear it down!
Teardown please!!!
c'mon Dave! show us the pron!
Don't turn it on, take it apaht!
Why so expensive for such a small amount of current?
One word precision ;)
TEAR IT DOWNNNNN .... i want to see what ref and magic it uses ... i LOVE precision test gear!
how much do make a year may I ask?
Nice try tax man
adisharr Just curious. Relax I've been watching since 50k subscribers.
Portal12345678910 he is not allowed to tell anyone, otherwise he will be fired.
"Half a bees dick" (10:03) how do you come up with those funny comparisons :-)
Take it apaaart.
Teardown please.
Tear down?? :-)
Yeah show us what is inside :)
maybe you can get the manual from their site www.adc-tech.co.jp/index.htm it required to register so I didn't try it.This site specifies that the manual is available at the manufacturer's official website. www.orutika.com/e/detail.php?detail=015549
Btw on the site history, they place the TR6142 to be designed and released in 1983
www.adc-tech.co.jp/en/about/history.html
Don't turn it on. Take it apart!
Well within spec and 20ish years old? Yes, teardown, must be some serious porn inside.
Tear down please!
more hoarding it seems ;)
20 minutes is NOT quick.
PLEASE STOP SAYING 'a quick' video.
I love your sharing style, but must say;
NONE of your videos are time efficient. ALL of them contain FAR too many uhm, er, ah statements over & OVER again that don't convey helpful information.
then fuck off and watch something else. to dave a 20 minute video IS quick. seriously, wtf? it's not supposed to be 'time efficient', what are you, his manager?
Dave could spend an hour talking just about the caps in a TV. So trust me, this is a short video considering the topic he's covering. Myself, and I suspect many others, watch Daves videos because they're fun and interesting. Not just to absorb raw facts. Half the time I don't even know what he's talking about but I still enjoy following his channel!
some of us are lucky enough to have attention spans > 2 minutes.
I've been here since EP 10-20 and just realized I've never said hello. Shame on me!
Love your videos, Dave.
Oh, and hi btw. :)
Hello!
