    I spent the first 10 years of my life in Elgin, Illinois. I went back for a visit ten years later and could not believe my eyes when I got off I-90 only to see Kmart gone. The old school firetruck I used to play on right across the street in Trout Park was also gone. Two big parts of my childhood were gone. It is only a matter of time that the Kmart in my current hometown is gone. We live in a different world now. I miss the Friday nights eating grilled cheese and fries at the Elgin Kmart restaurant courtesy of my grandparents, the blue light specials, the anticipation of Halloween and Christmas displays come late September and late November (they did not put up displays three month in advance back then), and the excitement of getting treated to baseball and football cards every time I went to Kmart. Thanks for the memories, Kmart! Amazon be damned!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Now Kmart is struggling. They keep closing more stores every year and in January 2017 they announced 78 stores closing. They are 3rd behind Target & Walmart. However, Kmart is doing well in Australia

    Rest S. S. Kresge and thank God he didn't see the wreck of his company. K Mart could have survived (along with Sears), but it needed (1) Wal-Mart logistics! (2) Basic merchandising. Stores have to be pleasant. Rest S. S. Kresge and thank you to your giving to the University of California!

      except Fast Eddie wasn't using profits during 2004-2010 to invest in his stores, he pocketed the money. They were still profitable until 2011, so if those profits had been used to enhance the store like the late-90's did with those Big K conversion- many of which still have that renovated look 20-some years later, they'd be better looking, and function far better than they are.

    I remember going in the Kresge 5 & 10¢ stores as a kid in Chicago in the 50s & 60s and then seeing the Kmart stores in South Florida in the mid to late 70s. Kmart just seemed cheap in comparison to Sears, which I preferred to shop in.

    Sad but I don't see physical Kmart stores being around in another 100 years unless Eddie steps down and the existing or most profitable stores get a COMPLETE makeover along with carrying more innovative products. I notice Kmart lacks in the electronics and grocery department however excels in the appliances department. I notice how Target offers electronics from Beats, Boss and Apple products while Kmart does not. What an edge, oh well there's always memories and perhaps Kmart.com.

    I currently work at Kmart store 4987, in Carson California. Its extremely ghetto and I really don't like the customers. (U would be surprised to hear the stories, I've only been there 8 months and I can tell u stories about fights breaking out, the customers and employees being either high or drunk or just on some type of drug) most of my co workers and the managers are pretty cool. Its sad to see but I'm pretty sure that this is the last year that mine will be open. Its sad cause the managers are really trying and they work their asses off. Especially my boss of the shipping department. She comes in 4am and helps unloads the truck, helps stock, oversees store operations. She works like 12 hours a day. I also feel bad for some of my older co workers cause they have been there a while. I'm young so I can always get another job and I'm also starting college soon. But when u are in ur 40s or 50s and the only job you've had is working at Kmart for 20 plus years. It can be a challenge for them plus some of them are not too bright, (remember its in a really ghetto area) I liked my time working there, met some really cool people and made friends, I don't regret it, but less than a year there and I already want to leave, just feel bad for some of my co workers cause when the time comes for that place to close down and trust me it will, with the rapid changes the store has made at my time being there, its very obvious the place is near its death, tears will be shed :'( yup lots of history In that place, a lot

      Do you know when the lease is up at your store? if not ask your manager and other people that work there. Because they are closing stores as their leases expire. So when the lease expires that is when your store will close.
      I have filmed several Kmarts here in Ohio they are on my page if you want to have a look

    • @batman4607
      @batman4607 8 лет назад +2

      Well I can't really ask cause I was fired, coincidentally, 2 days after I posted that comment. But I think the lease expires the end of this year. Also my coworker told me they have to pay 100 k a month for rent on the property. I have no idea where they get the money cause we hardly get any customers and we get a lot of stolen merchandise. When I was working there, the store manager adin who is an idiot kept emphasizing on less hours to work but he wanted us to get the work done faster. So basically the same work with much less time to do it. That place is not gonna last much longer, they fired the leads, including a manager, liquidated the over stock rooms and cut hours alooooot

    • @seaguy
      @seaguy 7 лет назад +2

      Actually Kmart had closed hundreds of stores by 2012 the first big wave of closings was around 2004-2005 when they first filed for bankruptcy and Kmart was still it's own company not merged with Sears. They sold many of the closed locations to HomeDepot which I feel was stupid. In Seattle they closed the West Seattle Kmart which was always busy and then sold the location to HomeDepot which still operates a store there. Kmart basically decided to throw in the towel and let Target become the winner after Target opened a store a few miles away. WalMart can't get into the city of Seattle because of the unavailable property of the size they need for a price they are willing to pay in the city. Kmart had stores in prime locations that retailers envied but they chose to give up and now retailers many competition to the Kmart operate in the very Kmart stores that was left empty after Kmart closed the location. WalMart is in the Bellevue WA former Kmart, McClendons Harware in the former Renton Kmart. That says to me that the location works but Kmart didn't bother even trying they handed others the locations and its continues to go down hill from there.

      ***** ahhh but under performing stores in a chain humm that's means they aren't making money in those areas thus their would-be customer base doesn't have any money funny thing is this is nation and world wide!!
      Also Walmart has gutted its headquarters twice of high management!! Sales are down over over all!! Walmart is not fine!! They may end up closing more stores soon though they haven't confirmed that yet!!!
      Their is an income drop and retail is failing as a result!!

    • @American-Motors-Corporation
      @American-Motors-Corporation 7 лет назад

      ***** k so maybe try to comprehend what was written before commenting!! I was not talking about such things that's a completely different topic than the one at hand!!
      All retail is is trouble at this time and with incomes being down people don't have the money to shop at high end or pretend high-end stores like Sears Macy's and Kohl's and Penny's so yes Walmart gets lots of customers via those people are forced their other wise they'd be shopping at the preppie stores and for groceries they'd rather shop Kroger not Walmart!!!
      But hey considering you know the future what are the winning lottery numbers???

    • @American-Motors-Corporation
      @American-Motors-Corporation 7 лет назад

      ***** you don't shop at either store and yet somehow you know what they are like??? OK you are doing large amounts of drugs!!
      Kmart has had problems since the late 70's and has never recovered due to bad management and scandal!!
      However if you knew anything in which you don't you'd know Kmart/Sears just got a new president and as of Friday the stock shot up over 40% they are embarking on a turn around this includes Kmart too maybe that will work finally!!
      Nothing worse than a know it all troll Jew!!

      unstoppable in the 80's, they let Hellmart pass them up in sales in 1990 by using their profits to buy other stores, instead of investing in their own stores. That's why Hellmart passed them in revenue that holiday season, and hasn't looked back. Kmart did rebound in the late-90's after selling off those stores, acquiring Venture stores to reopen as Kmart, and focus more on their company. Then, their CEO took company money for his own use, leading to the first bankruptcy. After they successfully emerged, they used $11 billion to buy Sears, instead of investing that money into their stores building new super centers, better distribution systems, new equipment, etc. Today nearly all of them are stuck in the 90's from that Big K rebranding, which was fine in the 2000's, but in the 2010's looks dated now.

      they first ran it into the ground in the 90's! Used company money for personal use, that ultimately led to the first bankruptcy in 2002.

    And the management of 1990s ran it into ground and it's nearly out of business.

      Early/mid-90's, they rebounded under Floyd Hall in the late-90's.

    False hope, in a false video. They've closed more stores now, than they did in bankruptcy. All their problems were internal, so they self-destructed.

      14DaveHunter It looks like a Kmart training video, the kind they show employees so they know the history of the company. It leaves out all the negatives, like the bankruptcy in 2001 and the massive store closings of the last 15 to 16 years or so. In the 1990s, Kmart used to have around 2300 stores, now they are down to close to 750.
