Last year, when BYU came to Arkansas, they donated a huge amount of supplies to the local food bank. It received a lot of positive local media coverage. I had not even returned to church yet or had gotten rebaptized yet, but it did catch my attention. I’m grateful for BYU and grateful for the gospel, may we never separate the mission of the gospel and the mission of BYU.

40 years ago I was a nanny in CT. I had grown up in UT. My boss came home one day and told me that he had hired a guy from BYU because of me. He later told me that it was the best decision he had ever made

I have had a long dislike of BYU for reasons that i don't fully understand. Jacob makes some great points though and is helping me reassess.
I am a proud Utah State man but I strongly respect BYU for their generosity in the K State affair.
As I have traveled for business during my career, I am surprised how often BYU football comes up when people learn I am LDS. However, the impression is generally negative. I.e. "BYU is the dirtiest program in the NCAA". OK.....
I think these types of acts will completely turn this around and create a completely new reputation. Maybe Bronco Mendenhall was right... the football program might open some missionary opportunities.
Kalani has put his stamp on this program and fan base! And it’s a good thing, I think BYU is building a new reputation that will supersede that old one of having dirty players and pompous fans.
I was a little concerned when I saw the title of the video. However, I see your point. There are good things and good examples of good behavior at BYU. Myself, my wife and most of our kids went to BYU so I am not anti-BYU just extremely disappointed by so much that goes on and kind of wish my kids never attended BYU. With that said, I think it is important to draw a distinction between the Saints on the one hand and the Admins and Academics (scribes) on the other hand. In my mind, it was the scribes and the admins that fought against Jesus at his coming and it was the scribes and admins that lead the deuteronomist takeover prior to Jesus. Jesus was most upset and fought the most with the admins and the scribes not the sinners. Academics and various other types of elitists are the modern day scribes and BYU is full of them.

My wife, who went to BYU for undergrad and law school, always holds it over me that she went to the “Lord’s University” while I went to lowly Texas A&M lol. Great school! Great people!!!

Thats how I felt when the compliments rolled in over the kindness of BYU to visiting teams! So very happy for both the receivers and the givers!! Love those Cougars!!
Definitely resonates with needing a more masculine and not soft approach to church. This is something I don't get but it's part of our culture. Our men can be too soft and too nice!! Which is where things get weird at times. Life is not always soft and nice.
This has been talked about as a general problem in Christianity.
I participated in the Great 1987 BYU Pillow Fight. I still say Deseret Towers would have whipped Helaman Halls had the cops not showed up.

@davidjanbaz7728 this is a terrible argument considering we believe the same thing, but because we have somewhat different understandings of who God is, we believe we *are* true disciples of Christ. Unless you can provide reasons that may explain why the belief system is false in of itself, this doesn't mean anything.

When you talked about struggling with how feminine the church seemed to be for a young boy, I felt a lot of sympathy for that. I personally was never impressed with football, but shooting and fishing and hiking were the things I held tightly as a little boy growing up in the church.
This episode brought a big lump in my throat. I attended BYU off and on for several years but didn’t always appreciate what a blessing it was. I look back and see only the best parts of this opportunity. I attended other universities and enjoyed it all but BYU is unique, it really is the Lord’s University.😊
Kalani Sitake has done a lot to change the culture of BYU football, for the team and fans a like!!! Under Branco the players were known for cheap shots and being nasty. You can compete at the highest level and be tuff, but also shake hands and show love! The fans are a lot nicer these days as well. I think they have been humbled over the last 10 years of independence, but things are looking up! We need to make sure that this BYU brand represents strength, love, and sets an example for everyone that visits. And BYU and its fans are doing that these days. I even saw a thread on a BIG 12 comments section that was just BYU and Utah fans complementing and being kind to each other!

As the World gets worse & dark days lie ahead we need more masculine men who have the courage to stand & be "disagreeable". "Niceness" culture will be the end of us.
This is a good story and I love it, it's always good to actually hear something good coming out of that place. But as an active Latter-day Saint, there is nothing else in "mormonism" I despise other than BYU and the arrogance that comes from so many of its students. Growing up I used to be a HUGE BYU fan until I graduated high school and I would go visit my friends attending BYU, I could not believe how weird, rude, judgmental, and arrogant that almost everyone I ran into down there was. Over 7 years after high school, I made many trips down visiting friends, and just never really had a very good experience. I find in different wards I have been in, if there are people I struggle with, the majority of the time I find out at some point they went to BYU Provo. I don't find the same to be true with people who went to Idaho or Hawaii. I am truly ashamed this University is associated with my religion.
Ya thats crazy. I had people tell me the same thing before I transferred to BYU from BYUIdaho. But I only ran into a few people like that in some general classes. Everyone I met in my major (mechanical engineering) were all really good hard working people, that would go out of their way to help me with anything. I'm so grateful I was able go to BYU and learn from them.

Hi Jacob , Why did BYU let David French speak on campus ???? why right before and election, is that to posion the minds of the students !! I am so disappointed in BYU. This was no accident , it was deliberate . I would appreciate you looking into this .
“Poison their minds”? College students are adults who can form their own decisions. And his address was very lovely. If you had problems with something he said in that address, you might need to look at yourself first.

When Amalackiah tried to change the law to threaten his faith, family, and freedom, Captain Moroni didn't think: "You know what the problem is? We are just too lonely!" These are serious times that call for serious Christian activism, not faux solutions and platitudes about friendship.
And you think a speech with less “fluff” and more politics is what would have been more appropriate at BYU?
Captain Moroni did not live in our day, and while we should follow his spiritual example, he experienced completely different circumstances than us. We can still stand for our faith, freedom, and beliefs without hatred of people who oppose those principles.
@@ChrisGibby-ni2fe I think it was inappropriate to invite him at all. He spends his days disingenuously vilifying everyone who votes differently him. He is part of the polarization problem, not the solution.
No one said anything about hate but you. Captain Moroni didn't hate. But we shouldn't give a voice to people who are part of the problem, and we shouldn't be deceived that the problem is "we're just so lonely" when the problems are much more serious than that.

Made me cry! I love BYU. All that footage of LDS youth spreading light and goodness throughout the world was so powerful. What a blessing to be part of this great work. Thank you for sharing your love of and appreciation for BYU. I hope our kids hang out there together one day.
Dang Jacob, one of your best videos! I admit, I am one of those who has been critical of your treatment of BYU in past videos... they felt very one-sided and seemd to ignore the vast amount of good that is accomplished by BYU. I stand corrected! Thank you for making this video. I get so tired of the BYU hate from so many. It's especially sad when it comes from members of the church. You are doing a great work Jacob. Keep it up!
Great video. But it’s easy to be a good sport when you are winning. I think the true test is when things aren’t going your way and you’re stressed. Are you still going to be Christlike then? I would hope that the experience KSU fans had would have been the same win or lose.

Being a U of U graduate it is very hard for me to see BYU doing good things but I am happy they did this really making the news. While it has been a while since I have been to the U but we occasionally do good things😊. I think both schools offer LDS students awesome opportunities.
Latter-Day Saints at their best are wonderful people. Latter-Day Saints at their worst aren't so wonderful. I taught in Provo School District for many years and BYU was very supportive of our schools. It is a fine university that offers a good education at a great price. That said, I have been to many BYU sporting events (mostly football and men's basketball games) over the last 20 years and I am not impressed at all with fan behavior. Yes, BYU fans are kind and courteous when BYU wins. However, when they lose the fans exhibit extremely poor sportsmanship. They often turn it into a religious thing saying the refs and opponents hate them because they are LDS.
BYU is a singular example of what could be happening in the institutional church. Spending hundreds of millions of dollars to pump up the image of the Church and striving to be "accepted" by the world. Leading to a willingness to accept the world and to cut corners off of our "uniqueness". Take the logo off the uniforms and change the team colors and BYU football would be just like any other team in D1. A multimillion dollar business, with wealthy coaches, over indulged athletes and lavious facilities and operations. Seemingly skirting the standards of the Church and school for the sake of what, notoriety and public acceptance? Goodwill, caring for others, providing donations and funds to worthy causes is great. But, as I recall, we are asked to give our alms in a quiet and perhaps even silent manner, without drawing attention to ourselves.
BYU is a large private school in the US, which by the way is home to less than half of the members of the Church. The elite's of the church, including the self proclaimed elites who attended the Y, make up a fraction of a percentage of the Church membership. Really, what does BYU's win over Kansas State have to do with 99.9% of the members, including the millions in Mexico, South America, Asia or Africa. We are losing our "uniqueness" to the heavy gravity of the world and we are also losing so many along the way, including many BYU students and graduates. I'm worried.
Character and Competence. Think about that when making your decision about who to vote for for president of the United States of America 👍🏻
My love of British soccer was killed by rioting fans in my native Leeds. It was too frightening to go to games. I’m not competitive. I just love playing games for the camaraderie and strategizing.
I can't argue that the game experience was amazing to behold. I would even venture to say that the kick return could have had divine intervention to add a layer of amazingness to the event. However, if the Cougs wanted to do more, they could have increased their magnanimity by handing out Aggie Ice Cream. Go Cougs!...and of course, go Aggies!
I love BYU and the football team. There was even a man who took the missionary lessons because of the BYU victory.
I saw they added that children's song into the latest round of new releases for the hymn book, but I don't think its entirely new to the primary. This was one of my favorite songs we would sing in primary when I was growing up! Anybody else sing it, too?

I’m a BYU grad so maybe I’m speaking from bias here, but one thing I’ve never understood is how fellow members of the church cheer for BYU to fail especially in sports. Like, I get that you would like your team to beat BYU in a football game, but why would you want the university affiliated with your faith to perform poorly? Why cheer when BYU loses to a school you have no affiliation with?
I am from Utah and I live in Georgia. A lot of members in the south do not like BYU at all! I think it’s key for BYU grades to remember that once you put on that shirt or hat with the logo you represent more than just a university! At church and in public. I love that BYU is representing the church now better than ever.
A friend of mine(we're members) really cannot stand BYU because it's got a few *interesting* souls attending. I think members simply dislike it because of the "bandwagon" on BYU, though

I’ve never been called such horrible names, sworn at, and flipped off more in my life than attending a game at byu while wearing my team’s shirt and hat as a visiting team supporter. I hate byu, byu football, and byu fans. I say this as a temple recommend holding, faithful, and fully active member of the church.

If it only started with the first cell How was that built: cells are made up of many complex molecules and amino acids.
