Note: A LEGAL ultralight is limited to 1 seat and requires no pilot certificate to fly. A 2-seat "ultralight" is, in fact, a Light Sport Airplane and requires a pilot certificate to fly. There is no such thing as a "legal 2-seat ultralight."

I would add the failure to practice flight skills to the list. "I got my GA license so I no longer need to practice anymore." That is a recipe for disaster.

Why is that? I though people who could fly a big airlines plane could also fly ultralight?🙏
Different aircraft require different skill sets. While the FAA requires no flying experience for ultralights, it would be much safer to get light aircraft training.
@ishady27 Different planes, different flying qualities that MUST be respected and handled very specifically. Comes to mind the tragic case of an Air Force fighter pilot who was killed with his wife while flying a small Cirrus GA plane when he stalled it. Sadly, too many of those cases.
For that reason, even airline pilots have to be trained in the different models of airliner planes that they will fly, even when they are from the very same manufacturer.
Training is essential. It is crucial to know what your airplane can AND can't do. One can attempt to self train, but there is so much to know about flying that is NOT intuitive that need to be taught to you so you're less likely to do something stupid. The consequences of ignorance can be soooo harsh. Courtney, you're great! Thanks for all your great videos.

Courtney, the underlying rule "don't exceed your understanding", we get into trouble from the things we don't know or understand. Never stop learning, accept correction, watch your videos and others and get instruction. The worst is not knowing what we don't know!

So what your saying is most causes come down to pilot error. What about unexpected mechanical failure on something the pilot couldn't check pre-flight, a weather event that wasn't forecast or another aircraft in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes it's just bad luck.
There are rare internal breakdowns with engines. We have NEXRAD these days. Free to check weather. True, there can be collisions, but I've not heard of one involving an ultralight.

What’s the average cost of lessons? I’m in SC and I can’t seem to figure out where to actually take a training lesson.
About $150 an hour is good ballpark number. I'd try Captain Drake's Family Aerial Adventures. They have on site lodging for students.

well, people fly as they drive as they live and eat...🤷♀️that,s why people who use their brains are always cut short with rules to keep idiots safe...🤷♀️soon everytjing will be illegal, as in Europe...its, so expensive here that nobody can afford...another way to keep safe, forbid everything🤷♀️
