    Newspapers were used to pack the holes after sticking the blasting cap & dynamite to ensure blast energy broke more rock. Easier to stick newspaper than sand

    Maybe they were living there and the newspapers kept the mine warmer. I love the way you and Randy work together.you both know what to do and do it.Give that leg a break.I didn't listen to my back and kept pushing it untill i ended up totaly disabled.Through my life i would get a backache and just push till the pain went away. Then one day it didn't that was 15 years ago.Thanks Gly and Randy

    Good Morning Gly, George here. I was amazed by the amount of effort some person put in to getting newspapers alllllll the way out in the desert to that mine. Then as I thought about the job of blasting and hauling all that waste rock and ore and timber and and and... I was reminded that the men who dug mines were amazing and tougher than some individual who liked newspapers. What a great exploration, thanks for sharing the adventure. Makes my day to see Abandoned and Forgotten Places with a good pot of coffee. Smiling, George.

    Someone was probably hired to cart unsold papers to a landfill but kept the disposal money and dumped them there. A guy did that in my town but with tires. They drove around to repair shops and collected $2 per tire but instead of disposing them, they stored them in a house they were renting then bailed on the house. It cost the owner about $10,000 to have them removed from every room, floor to ceiling. The landlord was a cop, too, trying to help out a guy with a record. No good deed goes unpunished. He didn't press charges and sadly the con man died from an overdose a few months later.

    • @dustyc324
      @dustyc324 3 года назад +4

      we hire a certified company for this reason. we also don't let random people come and take our used tires because they are either unsafe, or we don't need them accusing us in any disposal scheme. One shop we drilled the sidewalls and the pickers caught on quickly.

    I got a nearly-free travel trailer from someone, so cheap because it came with all the junk still in it, and it was 99% newspapers. The person who owned it just kept every newspaper they ever read, they couldn't make themselves throw them away because the information in them might be useful someday. I think this might be a similar situation.

Thankfully we didn’t get any tornadoes this time. That said I hope you keep showing our mining history since our logging history is all but lost and forgotten.

    Possible theory... In southern California miners cabins and buildings were insulated with newspaper, perhaps they thought it rich enough that they were going to build and stocked beforehand with free material in anticipation and it never came to fruition?

    Thanks Gly and Randy. For the life of me, I cannot fathom what in blue-green blazes would induce someone to haul hundreds to thousands of pounds of bundled newspapers to a remote Nevada mine, haul them all the way up the hill, and put them in two audits, jusT to LEAVE them there??!!?!?!?
    Delusions of being a pack rat? Psychotic break? Sun stroke?
    SO weird!

    I remember in the 1960s through early 80s schools, churches, and scouts used to have paper drives to raise money. The papers were either bound up with twine or placed in paper grocery bags just like those in the mines. The groups would collect and sell the paper to recyclers - it both raised money and supported environmental awareness (we called it ecology back then.) At one time, newspaper fetched as much as $80/ton, but once cities started implementing curbside recycling, there was a glut, and the prices dropped to ~$10/ton. Could be that someone was collecting the papers and storing them in the mines to keep them dry until they cashed them in, but when the price dropped it just wasn't worth it.

  • @alexcrane2151
    @alexcrane2151 3 года назад +3

    I’d venture to say the newspaper was used in a cheap form of ventilation. If Gly is correct that all passageways intersect at the bottom of the shaft, it seems that could be a great place to build a controlled fire (perhaps in a portable bbq?) to draw air through the mine and let the smoke exhaust out of the shaft. I just remember this was a form of ventilation used way WAY back in the day. I believe it’s mentioned in De Re Metallica. Anyway, that would be my guess. Keep up the great work, Gly, Mr. M, and Randy!

    Found a similar stash in the basement of a house. The entire basement, approximately 1200 square feet worth was full floor to ceiling and halfway up the stairs. The realtor that bought the house to flip told us that the previous owner had lived there for 38 years and delivered papers in the morning before going to his main job. Looked like a lot of people were not getting their papers.

    Gee Gly, that sure was a close call. Glad you are safe!!
    The one person on the ladder down the shaft at a time is a good idea and understandable for there are three things one must be careful of when below another mine Explorer who is descending down a shaft, putting weight upon a possible rickety ladder...
    1. The falling timber with rocks and dust
    2. The falling mine explorer with camera and us viewers in tow
    3. The inevitable and complimentary bowel movement. (The very thing us viewers experienced seeing you almost fall!!!😱)
    You sure do keep us on the edge of our seats with fingers sinking into the arms of our chairs. WOW, you take us on an epic journey, into some epic places with you.

I have heard that people way back in the 1800's up until the mid 1900's would stuff the inside of there walls with old papers and or rags to act as insulation. Maybe they were planning on building a cabin or something close bye but then figured out the mine wasn't worth it.
