Tinkering with old sports bikes at JHS, talking crap, having a laugh, for me 44 teeth at its best, guess I'm easily pleased. My head says R1 my heart thinks Aprilla.
The best looking r1 imo, and one of the best non Italian bikes of all time. The slightly shortened exhaust sounds surprisingly very good, has just the right amount of rasp to it. Can’t wait for the episodes to start rolling out! Also thank you lads for the consistent uploads lately it’s been keeping the voices away
The old Yamaha R1’s are fantastic bikes. Even with the new bmw s1000rr with a full exhaust and ecu flash the 5pw still is a ton of fun to ride. Sure it doesn’t make the top peak hp of the new bikes but the low end grunt and power delivery will give you smiles from one ear to the other. What a great bike. Nice choice
13:44 holy cow, you guys should open the theater screenings with James performing La Bamba live I never knew he was fluent in spanish and also such a gifted singer
I've had a 99 4xv R1 for 20 years and I've put over 55k trouble free miles on it. The fuel injected version for 1900 is crazy. So cool to see such an awesome machine for so little money. I love all the BBBs but I'm super excited for this one. Can't wait to see what Boothy gets.
I was lucky enough to bump into Al and Chris at MCL last weekend. They were just leaving the Arai stand but still made the time to have a chat. Top lads 👌🏻
I did the exact same job to a cheap end can on my Y reg R1 many years ago. Those rivets are staggeringly hard, it took me hours. Looking forward to seeing the wrap, I think
That was exactly like a kid in the shed with his dad, right down to handing him a clamp to keep him occupied on the wire wheel. Until he buggered it up.
I had a blue 5PW back in the day. I recently bought another one as a project & it now looks like it came off the showroom floor. They are a great bike, origional R1 engine with a much improved chasis geometry. Only downside is the seating ergonomics, footpegs are a bit too high & far back.
Had a 5PW. Akrapovic, K&N & PC3. 148 hp at the wheel. Even with a bigger rear sprocket she saw 183mph at Brunt’s with GPS timing gear. 10.7 in the 1/4. (Wheelies stopped better launch)
I've got a couple of huge boxes of 5PW bits you can have if you like Al. Clutch and gearbox bits, levers, rear sets, brackets, couple of fairing bits, full swing arm, clocks, calipers, mirrors, casings, ohlins steering damper plus all sorts of other bits. If you want them, they're yours.
Hey mate, not sure if this is important to you but I've just fitted a second battery directly to the main battery (on my 5pw R1) using John walker cables and i installed the secondary battery under the pillion seat and it's a perfect fit doing wonders in starting
I get riding my 2024 honda cb650r in the cold with abs, traction control and e clutch 😂 this guys a little bit tapped to enjoy an analogue on frosty roads 😂 respect
This project is good example why I only buy Japanese motorcycles and avoid Italian/Austrian bikes like the plague (especially since I dont buy brand new bikes). These may be quite old late model sportsbikes, but the situation regarding engineering and manufacturing quality has changed today
Fully synthetic is worth it in the old girl, I use their 7100 as it is perfect for road bikes, keeps the temps lower than with semi synth too, 300v certainly is not needed though.
At 9:47 You belted out, Last Christmas by Wham! That was so moving, I thought I was going to cry.....Some times that happens when I laugh really hard... Lol.. Just messing with you.. Nice R1 BTW.
@@jonasbaine3538 Yes it is George Michael but I think he was still in Wham when this song was recorded.. Take care and have a good one.. The other George.. Lol
FYI, I own a 03’ 5pw, and my dad owns a 02’ 5pw. In BOTH of our bikes the clutch slips but only when cold, after Maybe 15-20 mins of driving, the clutch grabs as usual. Also we both use 7100 15w50
Cut down stumpy can, shorty levers, scuffed bodywork, indicator dangling…… Looks like Al has confused Get Your Rat Out with Budget Bike Battle 😂 It does sound better though 👍
I think the 1900 UK pound for "sporty" bike nowadays in Southern California dollars would likely get you a mid range 500-800cc bike with a carburetor and probably a salvage title that still probably don't run right. I squeezed in the "sporty" category with $1900 in 2017 for a 1998 fuel injected honda vfr800 interceptor (first big bike), and still own it. Worst of it was piss rear brake (rebuild needed to function) and slipping clutch, but it was a lot of power compared to a 250cc for sure. This may well be the best budget bike in the series, although the previous owner may have given him a more decent deal for 44T. I don't really hear the BBB series mentioning replacing vacuum lines because that was probably the biggest gain in horsepower "feel" and torque in my instance.
You could dress up, (it's a term used by Engineers meaning to put a nice finish on ,nothing to do with Cosplay),the end of the Crash Bobbin with a Flapper. It might make it look less severe and help the sale if you're gonna Trade Up.👍
I love that r1 so freaking awesome I loved that bike as a kid. Would have done anything to have got one. A really young version of me would have had no business on it but I would still love to have one today
Had exactly the same model. Put a Remus can on, ran like a bag of spanners. Standard was best. But setting up in dynos not so prevalent then. Still, a short can will probably ruin the power delivery.
I had/have a silencer like that, a carbon one, but I found that it ran oddly, on a fazer 1000 gen 1, luckily I had my other non stock one to pick instead, but you might find the same and that you'll have to tune it in
Clutch had likely glazed up the clutch plates and then riding around since last time has de-glazed them. Has happened before at RWYB drag events where bikes are just on stock clutches. Hopefully wont come back!
I noticed that HPS are still going Harwoods Performance Source (HP Sauce) That business opened as R1 Performance Source. Solely selling R1 upgrades ..out of an Apple computer shop. Cos Giles the boss had an R1 😆 vrum vrum 🎉
Any chance we can see you boys do a “ Get your rat out” special? Make a real couple of rats! You boys would do an epic job of it and make it funny as feck to watch! Some real gusset gravy content!!
Wait until they tell you about the exhaust I took them to tune up for me. It was the Jesters Trick Bits GP Stubby for the CBR929/954RR. Huge flat spot between 3-6k rpm. Sounded fucking bonkers though and we all couldn't stop laughing. It was that bad I could hear it on the dyno from the town centre (Was munching a Greggs at the time) Best £300 spent on something I ripped off within a week. It was just stupid. Took it back with the Arrow system, Not perfect but loads better. 149hp at the wheel on my 20yr old 954RR... Not bad at all!

100% agree, can't get enough of it

As an Aprilia owner I obviously have to root for Chris this year, but this is a bargain for £1900! Well bought mate
Boooooo hisssssss etc
@@FortyFourTeeth if it's any consolation I've always been #teamFagan for the rest of the BBBs 🤣

Anyway, the red Daytona at 10:30 is gorgeous.
It's certainly not the worst buy considering the year and mileage, I wouldn't call it a bargain considering the rest of it though.

This is one of my favorite parts of budget bike battle. The guys at JHS are legends.
Gotta love that Bristol accent, I didn't need subtitles for most of the video because I grew up in Gloucester which speaks almost the same language

I think Motul 7100 is red and that’s fully synthetic. Could well have been that oil in there. Better for the road than 300V.

love the can should have kept the scorpion logo though just to make it more official looking :)
Boothy is probably going to do this right and have a proper off road adventure ala James may.
You landed on tour feet with this one Al 👍🏻
If you remove the second yellow cap from the drain pan it won't sputter and bubble or even overflow when you drain the oil.
