      @@funynonsence actually "boomers" are between the ages of 60-75 today. And 35-yr old are actually Millennials. The generation that probably most identifies with Duck Hunt in its original conception is Generation X. But good point on the legacy of the game still being very well known. Which is why I made no claim of exclusivity for my generation. I figured most people would still get the reference. How is the newer versions?

    "He's gonna want to know what it's like to really be a Klingon, just as you're learning now"
    That's some interesting commentary on Worf and his identity as a Klingon.
    Throughout the series Worf makes a big deal out of being a Klingon, saying things like _"Klingons dont laugh!"_ and _"I am Klingon! We do not have fun!"_ , but he's actually quite different to most other Klingons we see. Most other Klingons we see have a sense of humour and laugh and seem more easygoing than Worf (e.g. in "A Matter of Honor", and to some extent "The Chase"). They also seem to almost care less about "honour" than Worf (seen when Worf butts heads with them in "Sins of the Father" and "Rightful Heir" for example).
    It's almost as if WORF is the one who doesn't understand Klingon culture, or that he's out of touch with what modern Klingon culture is actually like. Which wouldn't be surprising given that Worf grew up as a kid on Earth; it would make sense that his understanding of Klingon culture and what it means to be a Klingon is based moreso on idealised stereotypes of stoic honourable warriors than on what most actual Klingons are like, since he had no other Klingons growing up for reference.

    • @buihuy5211

      Worf was seperated from his Klingon ancestry for most of his childhood, which he takes it so literally in his adulthood

    • @Desiremademanifest
      @Desiremademanifest 4 года назад +13

      I know they explain it at some point, I think in DS9 but don't hold me to it. When he was a kid he was, for all intents and purposes, a normal Klingon but if I remember correctly something happened that was so profound that he worked to restrain his more volatile emotions and that's how we get the stoic honorable warrior we see today.

    • @synthetic240
      @synthetic240 4 года назад +40

      It's also worth keeping in mind what "being Klingon" is metaphor for here. These are two black actors talking about being black and growing up black in America. These are people who grew up seeing racial violence on tv and black communities being radicalized (for good reasons!), not to mention their own experiences. It's about black youth wanting to connect to their cultural roots, but often only having books and their parents to learn from (if at all) because a different culture has forcefully assimilated their ancestors almost completely.
      At least Worf lived on a much more xenophilic Earth, but I'm sure he must have experienced prejudice at many points in his life.

    I love how she so purposefully *uses* that line "I guess I could come *down* to that level" just to demurely and elfishly prod him into a specific emotional space. She gives him a chance right there to take whatever tone he wants for the interaction, and he reacts defensively out of his sense of obligation to "stay true" to his perception of Klingon ideals, thereby walking of his own volition into the lesson in front of him. This is probably a good chunk of why Guinan consistently came off as ancient and superintelligent. Playing qualities like that as an actor can be uncompromisingly tricky and this is just such a solid iteration of that trope. I am always troubled by the minstrel-show-adjacent qualities of this kind of character, but it remains resoundingly true that this is an impeccable execution. Star Trek remains one of the strongest forces in contemporary cultural history pushing that particular envelope forward to this day.

    A lot modern writers could learn from this scene. If this was modern Trek we would know nothing about Guinan, she would just show up tell Warf how to be Klingon and stomp him at target practice. But this works better because she isn't telling how to be Klingon mearly giving him examples to refute what he thinks it means and her proficiency at target practice is believable because as she said "I've been doing this before you where born."
    All of it made sense because of what we have been allowed to know from her in previous episodes and it makes the scene flow easily and naturally. Hopefully modern writers will pick up on it soon.

That would be if she made everyone else useless to the story because of her power, but the only thing that's really special about her is that she's ancient and hasn't physically aged. She likely knows some pretty esoteric knowledge because she's a survivor of a species consumed by the Borg and immediately recognizes Q despite the fact that he was using a form he only relatively recently created for interacting with the humans, but it's rarely applicable on a tactical level.

    This is a pretty great scene. It's obvious that Worf misses shots while Guidan hits all hers, but that shows more than just target practice. Pay attention to the conversation and where they're at- the pacing of shots increases, and Guidan takes more shots while Worf rushes and misses more. The missed shots parallel Worf and how he lies to himself about being a Klingon, or lack of, among other things, including his son. Meanwhile, Guidan, in her ancient wisdom, lands her shots as she sees clearly what's going on in Worf's situation. And finally, this scene predicted Alexander in DS9, who did want to become a Klingon warrior after all, foreshadowing a future father-son story.

      Jagar Tharn, my biggest complaint about the Next Generation episode, “Aquiel,” was when Geordi realized that her dog was the biomimetic creature they were looking for, and he had to shoot it before it attacked him. If you watch closely when he fires the phaser, adjusting his aim while firing, you’ll see the beam changing angles as it goes out, staying in a straight line like a light saber. If you move a phaser while firing it, anything that’s already left it should continue in a straight line, and not be moved because you’re moving the phaser.

    Very good moment, granted I love a lot of Guinan's moments, but this is pretty awesome, and it's fun to see Worf owned, even though I love the guy.

    They cut almost this entire scene when showing this episode on BBC America.
    BBC America is starting to really suck, I realize.

      Do they show adverts on BBC America? If they do, that might be why. It's like when they show repeats of Top Gear on Dave in the UK, they have to chop a good ten minutes out of every episode to make them fit.
