  • When you think about the Dachshund, you may automatically think of a short-legged dog with a long body and floppy ears.
There are 3 varieties of Dachshund: Smooth-haired, Long-haired, and Wire-haired.
The Dachshund derives from the oldest breeds of German hunting dogs, such as the Bibarhund, and existed as long ago as the 16th century. Originally there was only one variety, the Smooth-haired Dachshund.
The Wirehaired was produced by introducing Dandie Dinmont and other terrier blood, while the Long-haired was formed by introducing the German Stober, a gundog, to a Smooth-haired Dachshund and Spaniel cross. Sporty and devoted, the Dachshund makes an excellent family pet and a good watchdog, with a surprisingly loud bark for its size.
The Short-haired is easy to groom, requiring only daily attention with a hound glove and soft cloth. The Wire-haired and Long-haired should be brushed with a stiff-bristled brush and also combed.
It's hard to think about this breed as anything else but a cute house pet.
But many surprising facts are coming up that might give you a new outlook on this popular breed.
