If you want your object to follow and ROTATE along the path after you pasted path keyframes, right click object > transform > auto-orient > orient along the path.
for closed path (like oval) - if you need change start point - on shape layer select anchor point - right click mouse > mask and shape > set first vertex
I think you missed something with the rotation as the rocket is moving on the path but it's going straight itself as it should rotate along the curvature of the path isn't it?
hi idk why but its not working instead of a rocket I took a plain elips and when I paste the path on the elipss position it doesn't snap to the start of the path can someone help me out here please
Will someone let me know if this method is outdated? I'm trying to paste the path in the position parameter and all it does is add the path as a shape object in the contents folder
I don't know anything about after effect but i came here because in the software that im learning (blender 3D software) there is this follow a path thing and i have used it when in was creating my first two simple animations for my RUclips channel. Can't wait to get my hands into after effects.
Hey Joshua I don't know how but every problem I encounter in After Effects, I get the solution to that from your channel. Thanks a ton man 🤗🌻 Hats off to you🙌🏻
make sure you are not on any layer. no layer is selected or highlighted. then use the pen tool to draw your path and open up that layer from the pen tool like he said to copy the path. hope that helps :D
Is there a way to invert the order of the object following the path? Dragging the first/last keyframe doesn't work, it changes the whole path. Contents > Shape 1 > Path 1 and clicking the "arrow order" doesn't change anything...
I've been lookin for a tutorial of this for a couple days without success. Now I finally found one that's very well explained. Thanks, you have a new follower.
just a heads up, reduce the wiggles values a little for if youre using normal lens flare. otherwise it obnoxiously flickers in and out of sight. And apply a glow to it to make it similar to the optical flare look.
Hi, Thank you for your amazing and simple super amazing tutorials, I was shocked at how you did deliver a straightforward point in a short period. However, I noticed at 1:44 you moved the last keyframe and all previous keyframes are automatically moved together with this keyframe to give you exactly the speed you need. Can you explain to me this nice trick, it will save me really a lot of time when I adjust the speed of characters and objects. Thanks in advance !
It is very helpful. be I need to know how to move the rocket in the same path in phasing the same direction. rocket is moving like some object. but it should move like its animated.
When I attempt this my pen draws a red shape. I tried matching the settings I see on your screen so now it makes a black shape but the blue line is identical only there are no key frames. Doesn't paste anything into the layer I'm trying to animate. What am I doing wrong?

for closed path (like oval) - if you need change start point - on shape layer select anchor point - right click mouse > mask and shape > set first vertex
For change direction - chose position (to select all points on timeline) - top menu>animation>keyframe assistant>time-reverse keyframes
I think you missed something with the rotation as the rocket is moving on the path but it's going straight itself as it should rotate along the curvature of the path isn't it?
Who is here still in 2024?
Copying and pasting the path into a shapes position doesn't work for me. Has this feature been removed?

Incredibly helpful thank you
Thank man. Great tutorial.
but how do we define only start end end keyframes and then animate along a path? by doing it like that we make sure its speed will not change
im not getting "path option" option, i would do it with a png image, but even with text it's not appearing (for circular movement)

amazing and simple tutorial. thank you !
hmm...when i do this, i get that white fill. unless i have to change that to no fill?
Hey, Thanks for your videos. What if we want to reverse the direction of the movement to start from the other side of the path with the same path?
Select the keyframes > right click > Keyframe Assistant > Time-Reverse Keyframes
is it possible to make an image follow a path? without changing its anchor and rotating?
You are a freakin' Genius! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
super simple, thanks
Omg thank you so much 🙌 u saved my animation 👑
when i click the blue box it only says masks not content
AE CS6, can't get this to work. Do I need a newer version?
Wish you would have also shown how to use the Auto Orient under Transform menu

Excellent explanation! 👏👏👏

Thanks, man! Simple and comprehensive!

thank you for the video 👍
How do I pause in between the paths if i want to hold position for few seconds?
Amazing, thank you for this! Such a simple thing to do but I had no idea how to do it..

Dude, thank you.

awesome tutorial, thx
superb Bro💝💝
If you make a ton of text and add a bunch of different shapes to them, it ends up looking like the original Monsters Inc Intro! It looks really rad (:
Your tutorials are great - straight to the point and easy to follow.
this was exactly what I was looking for.
Absolutely liked this video, thanks for this tutorial, buddy!
You are awesome!
excellent video
Wowwwww!! amazing...
Excellent tutorial, thank you ++++
my ellipse shape under path menu have only "size" and "position" what to do?
why does my image disappear when i copy the position onto the images position
can't see the layer that you are working (what is the use of the video?? )
You sir made the best tut for motion along paths, + rep!
Thankyou. Clear, concise, and to the point.

Concise and straight to the point - thank you very much for this amazing tutorial video :)
thanks but the first example with the objet is not complety finish. you objet didnt rotate
This is awesome!
short and simple. thank you♥
Very frustrating! You go so quickly pasting the path onto the object - nothing moves when I scrub through the timeline.
