  • Darrel demonstrates the correct way to sharpen a brand new graphite pencil. Maybe it seems crazy that there would be an incorrect way.....BUT there are reasons to do things a certain way, even if it is just a minor difference, it can have lasting effects on your pencils. Your grip and the way you hold it can help get the results you want. Find more great drawing tutorials on our site.

Wow awesome!:) I remember these electric pencil sharpeners in elementary school. I remember my class peers really jamming them in breaking the lead. I personally use a Staedtler by hand pencil sharpener:)

Like that '"don't sharpen your pencil over your drawing" I will have to remember that one. Lol. Danke.

I love the mild color with the graphite. I enjoy blending colored charcoal, graphite and/ or colored pencil with graphite and it’s a beautiful blend of media. I like the tinted charcoal and graphite both which can even be wet. Very cool! I have never had success with any sharpner so I just use a blade a I think that I waste less at least in my case since I don’t always need a fine point. Nice instructions and look forward to more tutorials. Thank you

Thank you. I've never given it much thought. I see a colored pencil drawing under your pencil sharpener. Will you be having more colored pencil tutorials?

Darrel started mixing in Colored Pencil Tutorials on our website many years ago. He still does more graphite than color, but there are several in each Art Studio Membership Plan or in the Shop area. Check them out here:
      artstudio.fivepencilmethod.com/shop
And then check the Colored Pencil box at the top in order to sort them out of the list. Hope that helps. :)

It's so unusual for me to see electric sharpeners that I totally forgot they exist :D
I've actually never seen one in real life. Not even the one with a crank. I guess European people mostly use the small mechanical ones where your hand does the pencil spinning.

While I've seen and used electronic sharpeners, and the kind with a crank, I prefer the manual kind. I feel like I have a bit more control.

@@Paige-Turnner Yes, that's true, especially if your pencil is breaking a lot and you don't want to just throw it away (which is very useful now, as the pandemic closed all art supplies stores and the only way to get new pencils is by ordering them online, and paying a lot for shipping).
I imagine the one with a crank is not easily portable (I guess you have to mount it somewhere to prevent it from moving), while the electric one feels like a super lazy thing :D

@@ondraspendlik9759 I found that if I still have a good amount of graphite at the tip, and it's just a bit dull, I'll use a bit of sandpaper to sharpen just the tip without having to wear away the entire pencil. 😊

@@Paige-Turnner That's a very good tip. A lot of my pencils are breaking, so this may be a good way to sharpen them.
Almost forgot about the most OG thing, sharpening with a knife. I remember going to a drawing course, one kid had a dull pencil and there was no sharpener, so I just took a snap off knife and sharpened his pencil with it. They were all looking at me like I was Bear Grylls sharpening a stick in the wild :D

huh ive never really seen artists use electric pencil sharpeners that much. I usually see the classic way of sharpening them by hand with a razorblade and then sanding them off with sandpaper. Maybe its just a matter of personal preference. Cause ive seen a lot of artists that like the lead to be exposed a lot so they can use the side of the pencil.

Get yourself a “ipoint helix electric sharpner “. You will become a professional pencil sharpener automatically, the machine will actually sharpen your pencil perfectly and will automatically stop sharpening with perfect results. At least that is the way it has been in my world for the past four years. Minimum maintenance required.
