I used my SAK Camping model to plug a leak on my ship. We were underway heading to Australia and we sprung a leak in the hull, just above the waterline. Me and another Navy Hull Technician were hamming a wooden plug into the leak. The plug was too big and we had no room to use a regular saw. I used the saw on my SAK to cut the plug to fit. I always have a SAK with me.

Another great story I have for you Dan....is in about 2011 I was doing a school in Cedar Lake Indiana.I am a retired journeyman plumber Union 210.Anyway....my EDC was always a Fieldmaster. Not too cumbersome to keep in front pocket.A brick layer saw me using it to sharpen my pencil and says.....hey what model is that.I told him and he claimed he had the same. His was purchased in mid 90s as mine was.....so he brough his in the next day.I looked at his and told him that mine had one more tool on it than his.I bet you a fifty they are the same.He folded out all his tools,so did I then I pulled my straight pin out,his didn't even have the hole.So the rest of the job.....I asked him.....wanna put money on that.

On the TV show, MacGyver carried different models in different episodes. You can do that when the story is written ahead of time and you know what you’ll be doing.
Since real life doesn’t tell you ahead of time what you will face, you are better off simply carrying the Swiss Champ.

Update, I now have all the confirmed MacGyver original series episode knives. That is once the Super Tinker and Fisherman arrive. Both post the '91 hook (thanks again for the help on that). I count 20 confirmed SAKs, the rest are best guesses (according to my research). I have two Fisherman models but both have issues and are not the best representation of the model. Both are fully functional, one just has the main blade mishaped due to years of sharpening, the other had burnt scales, broken scissor tips and the keyring section was broken off and bent in with jagged sharp edges. The toothpick was missing, but still had the aluminum tip tweezers, which I stored away for safe keeping. The tweezers alone were worth the $7 spent on the knife. I have 18 of the 20 in a Aztec 1800 case. The Picknicker and Adventurer (both slide lock) are too long to fit, so those are stored in a Apache 3800 case with my other Victorinox models. Because of not really knowing, the Golfer I have is a 91mm. Later on I'll get the 84mm version, so even a confirmed one is a mystery. Lol. I keep returning to this video for my research. Thanks for posting this video, it's really been a help to me.

Prices on these are getting ridiculous. I'm glad I got the majority of these (used) before that happened. Really only missing the Compact and Golfer. On my list to make the splurge later. I have two or three Picnickers (slide lock), a Rescue Tool (that I keep in my vehicle with a First Aid and Hemorrhage Control kit) and two of it's predecessors, Fireman, in honor of a friend of mine who was a firefighter and died suddenly (unexpectedly) from a brain hemorrhage a few years ago. I have over fifty SAKs in my collection, multiples of a few. One from a Berlin Wall museum in Germany (Spartan). I even have the Tinker with square/slotted Phillips that was used in the first McGuyver episode. A few I've bought and refurbished. One is a 70's Fisherman with broken scissor tips and a bent pen blade. The scales looked like it was held over a fire, melted and bubbled. Came with a aluminum tip tweezer which was removed and stored away, replaced with a new one. I reshaped and sharpened the scissors and very very very slowly bent the pen blade straight with the 5" Knipex pliers wrench. You can't even tell the pen blade was bent. The scissors have to be looked at closely to see they were reshaped. Replaced the scales with the sapphire blue scales after filing off the broken and bent key ring that had flashing from the break. $8 headed for the garbage can buy that I brought back to life. I'm 53 and watched the original McGuyver each week as the episodes aired. Tried to watch the reboot and halfway through the first episode I stopped watching. It may have been called McGuyver but names can be deceiving. I keep returning to this video and drool a little. One day I'll have all these. Getting closer to that goal. Lol

Good video. I have collected most of the knives MacGyver used. I don't know where you got your information, I just got mine from watching the series. In the opening sequence of the show, the knife with the chain on the key ring is a Super Tinker. When he cut up the 1956(?) Cadillac he used a Camper. In the show with Merlin the Magician he used a Camper, possibly a Compact. I have both, they both have nearly the same toolset but I prefer the Climber. I don't remember ever seeing a wood a saw used.
I hope this helps in your endeavors. When did the Compact come out? I have carried Swiss Army Knives for years but only bought one last year.

for some reason i never got a notification about your reply. I ended up buying a brand new swiss bianco yeoman for $158 and a new Battle of St. Jakob for $125 which is good enough for me as a Passenger. i inquired a knife modder on instagram (finding him thru a youtube video) and the dude wanted $350 for a custom yeoman and $325 for the custom Scientist. lol man i know for a fact i can mod one myself after watching a few youtube videos, it seems straightforward enough, and you can find a vintage new yeoman or scientist for $150 to $250 I think, so why he thinks $350 is fair is beyond me. i might ask you in an email about your modder in the future, i need to see what i can find in the coming weeks first because I have several knife dealers looking for me. i don't know what you consider "fair" as a price but if it's close to these prices i encountered then no way.

Swiss Army Dan Damn I always thought he had one of those. I've had my explorer swiss army knife for 20 years.

I could be mistaken... but I don't believe I ever saw Mac bust out the magnifier or inline phillips... Again, I love the Explorer. It's like a rugged Yeoman, lol! Cheers!

Swiss Army Dan I just checked a forum. I didn't see the explorer knife on the list. Sad, but it's still a MacGyver knife to me! 👌

SAK's are brilliant but those cork screws are really wasted real estate in most cases.

Responding 11 months late, but I personally love the corkscrew for the reasons that you can carry a mini screwdriver in it, it is brilliant for getting tight knots undone and saving your fingernails, and of course liberating vino
      Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Good video. I have collected most of the knives MacGyver used. I don't know where you got your information, I just got mine from watching the series. In the opening sequence of the show, the knife with the chain on the key ring is a Super Tinker. When he cut up the 1956(?) Cadillac he used a Climber. In the show with Merlin the Magician he used a Climber, possibly a Compact. I have both, they both have nearly the same toolset but I prefer the Climber. I don't remember ever seeing a wood a saw used.
I hope this helps in your endeavors. What year did the Compact come out? I have carried Swiss Army Knives for years but only bought a Compact last year.

I was following this link in the video: www.macgyveronline.com/database/saks
Thought I remember seeing a camping logo in the episode w/ the Cadillac, maybe I'm wrong. I know for a fact that he used different knives in the same episode, sometimes in the same scene. Thanks for watching! OG MacGyver forever! Cheers!
