  • They are hard to find, overlooked, under-appreciated, mostly forgotten. Until now.
In 20 years of doing transit and rail videos, I have only caught two or three of them here and there. This month, I finally decided to showcase the SEPTA routes that regular riders sometimes see, but never ride: the 400-series routes. These routes are school trippers that operate across various areas of the city to and from a number of Philadelphia middle and high schools.
This video represents 8 of the 20 minutes of footage I got of the 400's rolling along on their assigned trips. Not all of the routes are featured, as I simply did not chase them all, but more than 2/3's of them are in this video clip.

Great video. Technically any one can ride the 400 series routes, but very few people other than school children do.

Especially since SEPTA doesn't make the schedules easy to find (available at customer service at 1234 Market only), nor is any information for them posted online. Add in the limited stops, the generic "400-Series" bus stop sign stickers, and no route maps shown for any of them, so really, if you see one, you may know the final destination... but not how it gets there.

I wish SEPTA would put some more specific info on their web page (or did they and I am missing it?) Just so that I and others would know the details and stuff. Say I love to follow how specific routes go through the city and whatnot

You haven't missed them; they are not mentioned anywhere in their information or web pages, and schedules for them are only available at the schools for students and to employees.
They're not really aimed for the regular traveler, as most of the 400's don't always run the same routing or to the same start point in the afternoons as they do in the mornings. Some are PM trips only, some are AM trips only. Many only have one or two trips each way, with times variable due to school schedule, and with limited stops. The printed schedules do not even have route maps on them, as they mainly only stop at the timepoints in the schedules. That's why even the bus stop signs that mention them are generic "400-Series (Limited Service)".

With no route maps on the schedules, I had to do a lot of wild guessing on where I might intercept them, based on the nearest timepoints listed in the schedules.

I don't know, but I know some of the routes were for Hallahan and Little Flower, along with Saul, Washington, Baldi, and others.
