    Thanks for this. I recently bought some ginger from the store and forgot about it in its produce bag and when I looked at it, it had begun to grow so I put it in a pot with the green part point up. I hope it continues to grow. Thanks for the video.

      I basically had the same thing happen except mine was laying under some fruit I had in a basket. One day was going to wash the basket and found it tucked under some dry old leaves. It had little nubs all over it so I put it outside on the patio and buried it in a pot that had a vacant place. Watered it occasionally and the greenery appeared and is now over a foot tall. That was about 6 weeks ago Maybe I should water it more? but it looks great? I am in Dallas and will take it in before frost.

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  5 месяцев назад +1

      You can plant it immediately without having to dry it first. Combine potting soil with compost mulch for your ginger. You want to plant your ginger in well-draining soil to prevent rot. Mildly acidic soil is best for ginger, so make sure that your soil or potting mix has a pH of six to six-and-a-half

    I am now addicted to growing ginger! but I have a question... the leaves are almost to the ceiling and nearly four feet tall. (the pot is sitting on a dresser). But do I cut the stems and leaves back? I know they are edible but and taste great but when is tall too tall?

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  2 года назад +1

      Tall and small stems are usually due to less exposure to sunlight.
      To get a healthy ginger plant you can take your pot out when the sun is shining.
      Cutting the stems will produce new shoots, but the stems that have been cut will not grow leaves back.

    What u mean by rhizome? Do we leave it back in the soil ? Please clarify that part with picture. Thanks 😊

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  3 года назад +3

      Rhizome, also called creeping rootstalk, horizontal underground plant stem capable of producing the shoot and root systems of a new plant. Rhizomes are used to store proteins and starches and enable plants to survive an annual unfavourable season underground.

  • @lesliegrier1058
    @lesliegrier1058 2 года назад +1

    What's a good fertilizer to use on them?

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  2 года назад +2

      Apply fertilizer right after ginger shoots emerge and fertilize your ginger rows every few weeks with low-nitrogen fertilizer on ginger, like a 10-20-20 or organic fertilizer like chicken manure. Too much nitrogen will cause ginger plants to grow excessive foliage, which will reduce rhizome yields. Be careful to apply fertilizer as a side dressing about 10 to 12 inches away from the row, as ginger plants can be damaged by direct fertilizer applications.

    • @GoGreenYes

      When your stems begin to turn yellow, your ginger root is nearing maturity and will soon be ready to harvest. Wait until your ginger plant stems have died and the soil has dried out before you harvest. Trim the top of the ginger plant stems two to three weeks before you plan to dig it up.

      You don't have to buy a factory potting mix. you can make it yourself, The best soil for ginger is loose, loamy, and rich in organic matter. Loamy soils allow water to drain freely, which will help prevent the rhizomes from becoming waterlogged.

      All ginger needs is filtered sunlight, warm and humid weather, and rich and moist soil. If you can mimic these conditions inside your house, you can grow it in just about any climate.
      The ideal temperature for ginger plant is around 75°F.

      The best soil for ginger is loose, loamy, and rich in organic matter. Loamy soils allow water to drain freely, which will help prevent the rhizomes from becoming waterlogged.
