One of the strangest things I've ever seen/heard and totaly killed it for me. I was interested Till that started then I just felt confused and uncomfortable 😂
My father used to drive a black cab but he wasn't a cab driver. He was a police officer and they used the cabs to do surveillance following suspected criminals. After all nobody would suspect a black cab being driven by a police officer in London
Sneaky! I have heard of similar tricks, like putting small, cuddly kids toys on the back window shelf to make a car look like a regular suburban family car.
They mostly all are! I found all the ones I had were so talkative, interesting, knowledgeable, and really interested in why I was in London and what I hoped to see.

And it has nothing to do with being "intimidated", it has to do with survival. There's two instances that having a legally owned firearm in my cab saved my life and I went home to my family that morning instead of a body bag.
Having lived in W1 for many years and had the ordeal of reading through routes of the blue book with both my dad and my brother who both became Black Cabbies, I can honestly say this vid was excellent fun. The 'haven't you got anything smaller joke' was so funny I cried. Thanks for a great vid Jooles, I may book your tour for fun when I finally return.

Love this! Great video, as always! We spent all the 1960-70’s, when we visited London every Summer, in the fantastic black taxis. I loved the little pull-down seats they had, as well. Back then, hardly anyone else had cars in London & , dare I say, the whole of the UK, because mass transit was so good. Everyone had plants in their front gardens, not concrete & cars. 🙂
oh, joolsy... you've crossed so many lines in this video hahaha I miss black cabs. I took only one whilst being in London and I had no idea if I had to tip or not... besides I didn't have enough cash and took me a while until I found one who accepted cards! I like the way you use Blue Skies & Sun to show your videos off to best advantage. When I went for my psychiatric nurse interview at St Clement's Hospital I was told they were looking for a community nurse, & I said Oh you won't want me as I can't drive. But I was told I could take taxis. So I took taxis. Wonderful!!!
I met Stephen Fry getting out of his cab once, he told me he used to have a fake cab license plate that read " authorized by the neapolitan police" He liked the cab because he could drive in bus lanes.

Happy 🐰 Easter Joolz! Oct 2018, my 1st visit to London; I loved the knowledge of the cabbies! When they found out I was from USA, they immediately started pointing out buildings for me. It was like having Joolz Guides in the cab w me ☺
I'm sure you pointed this out, but it's cheaper to take a black cab than the tube if you have more than a couple of people. At least in Central London. I I love Black Cabs. And where else will you get a driver who knows the best way to go, let alone recognises where you ask to go.
Reminds me of my days living near the Oval. I think the minicab shop across the road only employed blokes that arrived in the UK that day. Coming home from friends in Surrey Quays the mini cabs were east end geezers doing the knowledge. Talk about chalk and cheese.
What a cracking episode this was. When I’m allowed to travel to the big smoke again I will make a point of using the classic black cabs. They are part of the cultural landscape and it would be crap if they died off. All hail the black cab!!
Another great video. You're my best source of quirky information on London. I've never noticed that single taxi rank at Queens Gate. I knew Benny Hill lived there, apparently his flat was very sparsely furnished, in the day before it became fashionable.
You should interview Charlie, a taxi driver who took Paul McCartney to his home several times. I was lucky enough to meet him back in 2012. He was really kind. Thanks a million!
Has a cabbie ever been asked to go from the Central London Mosque to a Synagogue? Does anyone remember when Richard Branson was on This is Your Life? He was picked up by a black cab. that had a hidden camera to take him to the studio. The driver was a typical cabbie complete with cheese cutter cap, asking things like where to guv, and what do you do for a living. It wasn't until he got to the studio that he found out that the cabbie was actually Phil Collins.
I loved the one you did on rotherhive ans deptford as i was born and raised in a wharf saint George's wharf that was had parish border line whent trough the middle so kitchen and bathroom in deptford and everything else in flat was in rotherith Surry docks
Brilliant stuff, great support from Joolz guide, be wonderful if the cycle lanes could go and give black cabs the roads they deserve to get peeps to where they need to go to especially people who rely on cabbies with wheelchair ramps.

Why anyone would think about getting in an unsafe uber mini-cab is beyond me. London has the best taxi service full stop. Its not cheap but neither is a Gin & Tonic nowadays. To get home safe and sound is priceless.
did a bit of taxi driving myself in Darlington. Darlington to Heathrow was the fare one night for a young lady, bound for the Bahamas, who'd misread the train timetable!
The black cab taxis are the best in the world with characters, knowledge & safety to get wherever you are going & safe for woman knowing the taxi man is checked out & they make sure you get home & wait till you get in 😊 I have always used taxis for 45 yrs & another thing they do a lot for Charity day trips to the coast for vulnerable children, I insist my Niece only used the black taxi to get home on a night out & I feel safe knowing she is safe. A great British tradition the black taxi & drivers . Appreciate 😊
The change thing: nobody is obliged to give change, but they are obliged to accept legal tender in the settlement of debt (such as after a taxi ride). Therefore there is no obligation on the part of the driver to post the change to the client at all.

I’m not from London but spent a lot of years during the 70’s I had two eye operations at moorfields eye hospital saw grease at the cinema as a treat can’t remember which one also watching an American werewolf in London reminds me of how I remember London looking just great memories have you ever done a walk where the American werewolf scenes were filmed including the street where he morphed into werewolf? IN the end Benny moved to Teddington, 5 minute walk to Teddington Studios, and that's where he died sadly. I used to live just near him there.
