  • Previously unreleased recordings from an early practice session at David Grisman's house, possibly the earliest recordings of Old And In The Way that exist!
The lineup for this session differs from the group that debuted a few months later at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo which only included Garcia, Grisman, Rowan and Kahn. By April, Richard Greene had been added on fiddle. In contrast to those iterations of the band, this recording seems to include Garcia, Grisman, Greene, and David Nichtern (later to join Garcia and others in 1974 for the Great American String Band). The bassist is assumed to be Kahn. Rowan does not appear to be present. Though unidentified, there seems to be a second violinist on the last song.
    1. Rank Strangers To Me 0:12

    5. True Life Blues 30:09

“Kissimmee Kid” is a Vassar tune that found its way to Richard Betts’ “Highway Call” album. Vassar is playing fiddle on that tune and the instrumental that ends this rehearsal. His playing and speaking voice are unmistakable. RIP Vassar!

I learned about The Vassar first by hearing this killer fiddle player on i think it was Buffetts Pink Carnation n a White Sports Coat lp . then into the lp some Jimmy yells Vassar ! and now ive been hearing some of his best stuff for 40 plus years . No wonder Jerry hooked up with him.

Definitely Vassar on Kissimmee Kid and last song ie. "Jerry's Breakdown." You can hear Vassar discussing parts with Jerry concerning Jerry's Breakdown.
