For the expense the motor home is it is nice that someone does the repairs needed still. That is not a skillset many want to learn. Words are hard for Chad on thursdays, lol they are hard an many days for me. The roof looked awesome like they always do. I think the reasons I continue to like watching them is your personalities, also the craftsmanship and seeing the mess turned into a lovely white roof, new paint line again like new. You guys do great work. I hope you all stay safe and healthy.
It’s funny how many “Experts” say how well made Winnebagos are. And how they are the industry standard for quality made motorhomes. Then I watch your videos and see how they are actually done and hear how you explain how the roofs are done so poorly. Seems to me the rest of the coach could be top of the line. But if the roof is junk, everything below it will be junk within a few years! I trust your explanation and visual proof over what the so called “Experts” say! Well done James!
I bought one based on those "expert" opinions. Since it is just a big styrofoam cooler, it is really loud inside when it rains. I wonder what other RV roof construction would offer some better sound attenuation.
You guys rock ! Just spoke to Richard at Cassone's about getting my 2006 Mandalay Presidio roof replaced and after watching the video I can see what a job it is ! Had no idea the "end caps" had to be be lifted up/off just to start the job ! 20:23 : Excellent idea with the tile saw to make that exact cut ! Liked / Subscribed
I can hardly wait to replace my FRP wading pool/ice rink flat roof on my '85 Southwind mh, that has great drainage into the ceiling and walls ha ha, (had to gut all interior to the foam). I'm thinking I should slightly build up and convex the deck and roll over the side coping metal and add a termination strip on the sides. I don't know if anyone has done this, this video gave me the idea although FILON seams so expensive. I'm doing this project in my backyard, it's tough I just turned 70 but I can't quit now haha! Love all your videos! Michael
Great Job !! That roof looks better than New!! A buddy of mine is in the RV repair business and I told him about your Channel about 8 months ago and he regularly uses your video's to show his employee how the job needs to be done and the tips you give ! I Tell you he really appreciates your video's !! His name is Steve Norris Vibes RV repair
Haven’t seen any of your videos for a while. It’s nice to see you are still working hard at it. I enjoy watching your videos and you still make it look easy. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I mentioned to some colleagues in the RV business that you are the RV expert I refer to and quote - me being a diehard RV consumer - I said that I would be their QC on repairs and new acceptances. They seemed somewhat offended - I think because deep down they know you are a truthful, honest expert with tons of experience to boot. There is no excuse to condone and support shoddy workmanship in pursuit of profits!!!
I'll say it James. You do very nice work. You don't cut corners like I've seen other's do. Many are just concerned with getting it done as quick as possible if if they mickey mouse it. Sometimes you want to save some bucks and cutting a corner may not matter much but a roof is not one of them. It really stinks to see the manufacturers being the worst culprits of not caring and doing shoddy work. Sometimes it seems that they have no idea how water flows and think enough caulk will take care of it.
Wow James, thanks for showing so much detail. The filler piece of foam you put in along the edge was interesting. Not impressed with Winnebago roof assembly after inspecting mine. On a 2020 model, they are built still the same.
You are my new ultra-favorite RUclipsr. THANK YOU for sharing your awesome expertise!!!! We're bout to tear off the front and rear caps on a newly-obtained 2005 Winnebago Vectra 40FD that has old water damage. Got it for a STEAL! (Only 30k miles!?) But still.... I'm a tad nervous about this big of a repair. Hubby is ALL IN tho. He's determined. Pray for me. ;0)
@@AZExpert James help! This is "The Husband". I've done a lot of work on travel trailers but this is our first go at a filon roof. We're confident and ready (thanks in large part to you and your videos) to pull the filon off and move ahead. However, we want to make sure we are buying the right filon material. Any suggestions as to where we should purchase supplies? We can easily get the decking at a hardware store, but we just want to make sure we are getting the right filon!? Any help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Always a great watch! I live in the UK and have a 1994 Georgie Boy Swinger that needs new EPDM roof and lots of side delamination to try and sort too. Maybe next year I will get round to tackling it! Keep the vids rolling James they're great 👍
Hi there I am always watching all your videos I am happy that you're showing the what's material you're using I was wondering how to finding that white fom to glue plywood thanks for showing those videos I am enjoying watching
Another great video. Question for you i have a 78 winnebago chieftan 25ft with a flat roof starting to sag a little and fail so im going to completely re do the roof and adding some trusses for water run off. My question for you because i value you knowledge is if you could have your choice of roofing materials, what would you prefer in my case epdm tpo pvc or aluminum sheet? Thanks
Thanks James for the great content. Your videos are so interesting and informative. Would you consider giving rough cost estimates of some of these repairs? It would help if we were going to buy an RV that have some of these problems. Thanks and keep them coming.
James, I have a 2002 Winnie Journey, and along the right radius, front to back has come loose from the luan, but only about 6" in from the outer radius. My question is, If I try to lift the filon up so I can put more adhesive under at the edge, is it likely the filon will rip? It will only need to come up to clear the outer edge, then it would be free, and I could put adhesive under the radius and retuck. If I clean out the trim well, I can move it, but I have yet to try end to end to clear the trim edge. Any thoughts or warnings? It might be more brittle but it might allow me enough flex to add more adhesive on the radius. The first crack and I'll stop and reassess.
Hi James, Quick question. I am replacing the membrane on my 2010 5th wheel Denali by Dutchmen and once I got the old one off, there remains a very sticky glue on the chipper board. Not my preferred materiel but I suspect it's for cost reasons. Is there something that can be used to remove the glue or is laying down a thin plywood over it the way to go? Great videos BTW very informative.
James I have a 2011 cedar Creek 5 wheel with EPDM roofing, not leaking, I want to recoat it with some super tough coating. What do you suggest and how much dicor resealing or over sealing should be done. I would like to get 5 plus years out of it
So, this coach was a just a thin “fiberglass” roof, would you expect a “gel coat fiberglass” roof to last the life of the coach, with just regular maintenance of “caulking” the seams?
Just going to replace roof on 2014 Rockwood 2109S trying to determine what to use, dealer suggested PVC. A friend who does commercial roofing said I could use TPO 60 mil is there any reason not to us that? I just want to use the best most durable material Great videos Thanks!
I'm about to install 60m tpo commercial. Call around to roofing suppliers. They just might have a roll that's been cut. I scored 75' for $150. Just gotta buy the glue now.
Hi James, what do you think of running a heated cord in my travel trailer rain gutters? It's in the snow all winter and I get ice damns forming on the edge of the roof.
I am learning a lot about Winnebago roofs from watching your videos. I have replaced my living room vent fan and the bathroom vent. I want to add a vent in the bed room. My question is how do I find out where to cut the 14X14 hole without hitting a cross brace? This is on a 2010 Sunstar 26P. Will a stud finder find the cross brace or does Winnebago have drawings showing the cross braces?
I use a siphon feed cheap gun from harbor freight and throw it away if it clogs after 2 or three uses or get the warranty from harbor freight, I have not found maintaining it to be cost effective
What was the cost on that? Its exactly the same as our roof. 2005 Winnebago Journey. I really wish there was a way to relaminate some of the delamination bubbles we have until we get a full roof replacement.
Have you ever used azdel for roof sheeting instead of luan? Is azdel better. I understand it is more expensive? What do think of using a spray roofing or roll on liquid material similar to truck bed liner? Comments please? Good bad?
Just out of curiosity, what would it cost to do the same procedure on a 1991 Fleetwood Flair 22 foot long Class A Motorhome that you did with the Winnabago Roof in this video ?
Nicely done! I wish you shared more details on how to cut holes, but perhaps it's all covered in other videos. How long did it take to do the roof only from removing AC units and all stuff to sealing back the radiuses?
I'm not sure about later models than ours... The Ultimate series was only made for a few years... And I as far as I know it was the predecessor to the Journey... But I can confirm that our 2001 Ultimate Advantage is based on a Freightliner chassis... And as far a high end or luxury is concerned there was one trim level higher and that was the Ultimate Freedom... Perhaps others can comment...
Learned a lot watching your videos James, but here is a question for you. It seems Tiffin uses a Silicone CSL 515 for caulking, that does not seem to be generally available. In your experience, is there a recommended sealant that will adhere to this material and not peel off? Or, do I need to order tubes from Tiffin, as I cannot find this anywhere. Thanks so much!
Another great save for your customer. In your earlier roof video you were using mineral spirits and a razor blade to clean off the old sealant. Have you switched to using an oscillating multi-tool instead or just for this type of repair? Thanks for another informative video watched from the west valley - Surprise!
Chad is the wood to 1/4" or 1/8" ? So how does anyone expect 65 " X 39" Solar Panel to stay on top of a flat surface going down the road at say 70 MPH ? So what if you have 10 solar panels doing the same to the same motorhome roof ?
1/8" that's why a good adhesive sealant is recommended under the feet mounts. Knock on wood, I've never had one blow off, and honestly domed satellite dishes create much more drag and they don't blow off either.
That’s a dangerous job the way you are having to walk around on the roof without any barrier. If I were you I would build another roof with stairs on each side leaving enough room between the 2 wooden structures to back the coach in between them to do roofing jobs.

the old deck is 1/8 paneling it does not hold screws. it was also loose from the foam underneath so I'm not confident I would feel comfortable charging for a repair I could not feel good about. There's no framing underneath just foam and no location for termination strips on the sides. Thanks

What's the trick for cleaning over sprayed adhesive on the roof?
The manufacturer of the adhesive usually sells or recommends a removal product. Usually that sort of thing comes off easily if you get to it early.
Mineral spirits or laquer thinner

the old deck is 1/8 paneling it does not hold screws. it was also loose from the foam underneath so I'm not confident I would feel comfortable charging for a repair I could not feel good about. There's no framing underneath just foam and no location for termination strips on the sides. Thanks
I thought Winnegago's had a one piece fiberglass roof's on them.
From that vantage point you can watch pickleball and scope out new customers.
Hahaha I don't need anymore work! I need to scope out a vacation
What does this cost?

Sorry I can't quote prices on here as these are customer units

Sorry I don't quote prices on here
How does someone get a hold of you
I have my email listed and I do my best to answer but I am just one guy. I'm not currently taking on any new jobs at this time.
Your wearing a nice toque ( Canadian language). Lolol
I actuallly know what that is! Thanks for watching!
I thought some Americans called them beanies….keep up the great work
Thanks for the reply
Your shirt's amazing, it looks exactly like our bowling team shirt.. Besides that, I've learned not to buy Winnebago RVs.
Good luck
Thanks! My wife ordered them for me because she was tired of me looking like a hobo in all my videos lol. Thanks for watching!
Wow Roof looks great. Inside needs some work.
Working on it
why wouldn’t they show how they'd tucked into the sides, dont know that many for many of us, thats the missing question on this replacement
What question do you have then?
@@AZExpert it looked difficult to tuck them edges into those sides but thank you for your videos don’t take my comment the wrong way I’m grateful for your videos 😂
I have a few videos showing a the tuck, but it really is scary the 5 minutes or so it takes and getting a good angle while not risking tearing the roof I didn't feel comfortable doing it. But I understand what you're saying. Thanks
James-I really liked watching this-But I would like to know in the video how much something like this costs? Just to determine for myself if it would be worth having it done 😀🚌🇺🇸
Sorry I cant quote prices as these are customer units

I’m so glad I didn’t buy a Winnebago RV! I thought the fiberglass roofs were better than the rubber from Fleetwood but those laminate roofs are a JOKE! I was looking at an older Winnebago brochure and they kept trying to brag about their chassis and construction around the doghouse but it looks like their house construction is horrible!
I thought you had a roof leak that was dripping throughout your videos. Its actually someone playing tennis.
HAHAHAHAHAH Thanks for watching!
