  • In 2015, McDonald’s had just discontinued the fan favorite snack wraps, removed hot mustard from the sauce lineup, and axed the Bacon Habanero Ranch, Bacon & Cheese, Deluxe Quarter Pounder with Cheese. To freshen up the menu, they rolled out a series of new items that same year in a desperate effort to freshen their old-school cheap burger image, appeal to the modern health-conscious consumers, and better compete with the upscale burger joints.
    Since 2015, the company has enjoyed a major turnaround. When you think of McDonald’s today, the company is really finding its form with hit celebrity partnerships from Travis Scott to BTS and Mariah Carey. There’s no more salads, gourmet sandwiches, or fancy sandwiches. And investors have noticed this turnaround with the stock up 110% over 5 years.
    Many companies in multiple industries, not just McDonald’s and fast foods, find themselves in this identity crisis of being caught between their iconic legacy reputation and the newer millennial market. It’s thanks to food delivery, all-day breakfast, and Rick & Morty that McDonald’s has completely transformed as a company, returning to the throne as the #1 fast food giant in 6 years.

    Great video but one issue: McDonald’s didn’t have a partnership with Rick & Morty during the whole Szechuan sauce craze. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland were quick to point that out and distance themselves from the whole fiasco when McDonald’s didn’t anticipate the hype and how big it was going to be when they first brought it back. This also explains the packaging on those sauce packets which was careful to tow the line in not looking like the same artwork from the show but as close to it as possible

      I don’t know in the US, but in Europe Mc Donald’s is EVERYWHERE. Not a single other fast food can compete with this capillary structure, maybe Burger King to a lesser extent. They make a lot of money cause here we don’t have a lot of Five Guys, Wendy’s and so on, otherwise they would be bankrupt.

      I don't think I'd even trust a piece of lettuce from McDonald's. They probably figured out a way to coat lettuce with refined carbs and micro salt.

    It's criminal how underappreciated this channel is. It's nice to see a business analysis channel with actual breakdowns of sales and earnings and a NO-BS, no-sensationalist explanation for wtf is going on.

      Not to be a downer, but I have seen some great channels like Punk Rock MBA devolve in quality once they had to push out videos very regularly instead of sporadically - I just hope this doesnt happen to Modern MBA

    Finally, a business channel that "gets it". In the food industry, if you do not know what you are, you do not know who your customer is...and McDonalds clearly deviated from its core principles during the early 2010s.
    2024 EDIT: It is clear that McDonalds deviated from its core principles once again; its prices are so off base that there is literally no reason to ever eat there. The inflation rate from 1995 to 2024 is about 100%, meaning $1 in 1995 would be worth about $2 today, yet a cheeseburger cost 69 cents back then; it costs $2.99 MINIMUM today. When a fast food company is not able to cover for its poor quality with cheap pricing, people have no reason to eat there, and the public outcry about this trend of fast food gouging definitely has merit. I am voting for change with my wallet, here's to hoping that others are doing the same.

      I agree, and I think this "know who your customers are" applies to every industry without exception.
      Tho out of all the things in the video, the items they showed during that period were the only things that made me want to go to McDonnalds, because I imagined them being offered at a cheaper price than the competition.

      But all of the things they introduced - from the gourmet range and the touchscreens were successfully tested in Australia, which has a completely different mentality to the US and Asian markets.
      But they finally realised that they would never get rid of the unhealthy stigma so they just leaned into it and made it a guilty pleasure meal.

    I remember going to a mcds when they had all of those fancy burgers. Having a waitress act like someone from a higher class restaurant and the burgers dressed up with higher quality condiments just all seemed so absurd to me. I was just laughing the whole time and honestly it was a novel experience but I never went back for that. If I want a high class experience, my first choice is not McDs. If I want a quick burger then I'll grab a mcdouble. You gotta know why your customer is choosing your restaurant

      And it also goes over McD's executives heads that the reason a lot of their competitors are doing well is because they're focusing on smaller menus and simpler but better tasting ingredients. McD's tries to expand its menu too much and cover all bases, while getting the basics wrong, like the quality of the patties or the freshness of the vegetables, they reduced the quality of their core products for speed and cost cutting but then ruin that speed efficiency benefit by adding too many menu options.
      It was at its worst when instead of focusing on competing with direct competitors in the fast burger market they stretched themselves even thinner by trying to muscle in on the pizza market, they want to cover every base but don't do any offshoot well.

      That whole phase reminds me a lot of that scene from Kingsman, where Samuel L. Jackson's character gives out McDonald's as a test to see if his guest is a snob.

    Hmm idk if this is overfocusing on the american market? I rarely went to McDonalds here in Denmark, but since they introduced a more premium appearance and burger line-up I find myself eating it a lot more. Those burgers that they removed in the US became a reason for their success here.

      I don't have any personal knowledge of how it is like in Denmark, but I think part of why that is glossed over here is because the US probably has a lot more burger competitors and options. By the time McD's was offering those, we could already go to tons of other options (that definitely tasted better in my opinion at least).

      ​@@MrJakson112 The US market represents probably half of McD's entire business, so it makes sense to focus business issues stemming from the single largest market, and generally speaking, US-based multinationals will call the US market as their home market, so it's probably challenging for the channel to speak from another angle.

    These celebrity meals seem like the adult version of happy meals, ya know like using a relevant cartoon or kids tv show to promote the happy meal via a toy and box art. I guess its us millennials that grew up on happy meals being conditioned to that kind of marketing.

    From my perspective, when I was a kid McDonald's had McDouble burgers. Today they have McDouble burgers. At all points in between they've had McDouble burgers. Frankly everything else is just background noise.
    Top tip. If you tell them to add lettuce tomato and Mayo to a McDouble, you've effectively got a flagship burger for half the price. Or if you tell them to skip the ketchup and mustard but add lettuce and Mac sauce, you've got a half-price Big Mac. This Is The Way.
    Also, as someone who delivers for Uber Eats from time to time, you get the palpable sense that McDonald's has their act together better than anyone. They have a system, dedicated secure packaging to minimizes spills and prevents pilfering, good communication, etc. McDonald's considers delivery a 3rd customer type, separate from in-store and drive-thru. They know when you're coming and they have the food ready when you get there. Everyone else makes you wait in line at the drive-thru, and they only start making it after you've shown up. Does your car not have enough cup holders for five 44oz drinks? Popeye's doesn't care. McDonald's may not be as slick as Domino's, but Domino's doesn't have to coordinate with 4 external service providers.

      I definitely agree that McDonald's has really adapted to delivery (I remember looking around confused for a milkshake listed on the DoorDash order I was picking up, only to be told that it was already in the bag, sealed and stickered and ready to go), but I will say that I've had to wait for extended periods before when picking up DD orders from McD's, and I usually avoid orders from there for that reason. Big picture-wise, the company has adapted with things like packaging orders, but individual stores won't always have things ready for drivers. Just my experience!

    I worked at Mcdonald's for a very long time, and I realized that all those new products that were released for celebrities were not something "new." They were just rebranded to make them appear different, but they were the same product under a different name.

    It's genuinely surprising to me how hard it is for big corporations to understand simple shifts in the market like this sometimes. Supersize Me came out when I was a child. McDonalds will never win my money by pretending to be healthy. But it will win my money by being cheaper, more prevalent or more convenient than the other fast food burger options around. You couldn't pay me to eat McD's every day, but making sure I'm more likely to pick it rather than Wendy's or BK if I'm in a rush is how they'll get my money at all.

    My local McDonald's had a Douglas DC-3 parked out the front from WW2 that was repurposed into a civilian plane then retired, where the franchise owner picked it up for the store. Sales were up 60% the year they got it and it was a consistent asset for the store; I can remember having a birthday party in there as a kid.

      In NZ Taupo there's a plane at the back of McDonald's. You can eat inside and man last time I was there was when I was like 10. I'm 24 now 😂

    I used to work at McDonald's in college around 13-15. I ate my all my meals (for free) from them at the time. They were really switching up the menu a lot, like every 3-5 months. After I left, I stopped eating there all together (because I gained a lot of weight and my meals weren't free. Lol) But the reason I now don't eat there anymore is because I feel like the menu is REALLY boring now. Now I know why that is.

      interesting...I like the boring stuff cause I am creature of habit. if I like something I order the same thing again. I don't eat McDonalds often, but I got a cheeseburger from the dollar menu and it was pretty comforting.

      I used to eat there for more or less the same reason, while I didn't work there it was the easiest/cheapest place to get to from where I did, and even after work it made for a good hang out space as for a long time I needed one outside of where i lived. now I've changed jobs and moved, so they no longer have either of those advantages and yea I've also given up on them completely. their menu was super boring, and what had me extra frustrated is I'd see people in other countries show off what they could get at the one there. And I felt like we where being given the short end of the stick on purpose. Seems like we are.

    Interesting to note that McDonalds in France and Switzerland is double the price and much higher quality.

      I’ve had McDonald’s in France. I didn’t notice much in terms of “higher quality”. The fries tasted better. However, when I had McDonald’s in Denmark, everything seemed fresh and tasted as such. For example, the burger bun looked and tasted like it was baked that morning.
      Note: I’ve mainly had McDonald’s in the UK. I’ve also had McDonald’s in several East Asian countries.

    It's always interesting for me to hear about what a failure the era of McDonald's competing with "fast casual" dining was for the company, because all those "gourmet" items were far and away my favorite things McDonald's has ever sold. I've always been a big watcher of TheReportOfTheWeek and, back when these items were current, it was always alienating for me to hear how much he disliked these faux-gourmet items for being off-brand for the company when I loved them. Just hearing names like "Maple Bacon Dijon" and "Sweet BBQ Bacon" in this video takes me back 5-6 years, to the last time I ever ate McDonald's regularly. Since they got rid of all my favorite items I have had no reason to go there.

      that is so true for me as well, and I just don't understand people at all - the most popular burger ever is a Big Mac: 1.5 of the bun, same amount of meat as double cheeseburger but only half the cheese, veggies as little as cheapest hamburger and only difference is cheapest veggie on the menu - lettuce and big mac sauce. It makes absolutely no sense, practically everything else on the menu has more meat, better price to quality/quantity ratio, more ingredients. But people everywhere go for Big Mac.
      Unfortunately for us McDonalds understood it and switched to big mac enjoyers rather than people who like something nicer.

    Well I consider myself a semi burger connoisseur always wanting to try the next best burger in town so I'm bit bummed that the fancy burgers are out but for McDonalds corporate perspective, menu simplification and less corporate location operation is more than likely the best move moving forward considering the competition from every direction imaginable.

    Celebrity culture is changing and that's uniquely beneficial for these partnerships. Selling out used to be a mark of a celebrity's downfall now its the goal to be more successful.

    Great video! McDonald's as a business has always been fascinating to me, and this video focuses on one of the few times in recent years when they knew how to be somewhat ahead of the curve. I also love the presentation, especially how non-impeding fumbles in the voiceover aren't edited out. Subscribed.

    I find it fascinating that people actually went for the celebrity thing. Yeah, I saw those ads, but it never made me want to buy anything from McDonald’s…I found the whole thing a little odd because you know that Mariah Carey would never eat McDonalds.
    I never would have guessed that those campaigns were actually a success.

    I guess I'm not their target. I liked their Signature Crafted sandwiches, and was sad to see them go. Their burgers now are pretty unappetizing; I basically only get breakfast or Nuggets there.

      Yeah, I usually go there for the same stuff or dessert, but I usually have more convenient options at home so I’ll only ever eat there at all for travel

    When I worked at a BK we had a secret cabinet in the office where we stored all the nasty chemicals that were not BK approved. Ant killer, drano, CLR, oven cleaner. The BK approved stuff sometimes didn't do the job. It was in the office because that was the one place that was off limits to the health inspector.

      Bk got royalties from the suppliers but theres not muchmoney in drano or ant kill since its a once in a while event.

    Took them a long time to figure out what In-N-Out has been doing for decades. Keep it simple to keep costs down and don't change that same reliable taste everyone goes there for.

      I ate there once in a US trip and am sad ever since we don't have it here in Germany. They had like 3 burger options plus fries and I think something like onion rings and ice cream but that was it. I bought a burger, took it to my hotel room and ate it like 5 hours later. It was still warm and way better than anything I ever ate at McDonald's.

    it was in response to people angry at them marketing to kids, and with more awareness of how bad fast food is they decided to scrap the kiddie stuff, first with the extended family then ronald himself. ronald is still around but hes not the active face of the org anymore

    I'd love to see a more in-depth video on the subject of on-demand delivery, if I had to wager, I think the profit on delivery sales are probably significantly less compared to dine-in, drive-thru or take-out since there will be mode layers of fees, like transaction fees. So it being a growth driver for top line sales might not translate well to the bottom line.

    I worked at McSlop's when the bacon Dijon sandwich and stuff were out. I loved those sandwiches. And I really enjoyed the chicken wraps. My all-time favorite McDonald's sandwich was the Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Miss it, to this day

      Those Create your taste burgers from 2015 were FAR better than anything currently on the McDonalds menu. That was the last time I actually went to McDonalds more than twice a year. And of course McDonald's did away with the menu. It shows you how simple minded the average consumer is. Being overwhelmed by better, tastier ingredients? It makes no sense but I guess less is more for the simple minded. McDonalds continues to be at the bottom of the burger hierarchy in my opinion. Why anyone would buy a burger from there over Shake Shack if both options are available is beyond me.

    Another thing to note is that around 2016 Ronald Mcdonald the mascot of the company for decades started getting phased out and getting replaced with Happy the happy meal

    Hello, I'd like to propose sound mixing tip: roll off your high end with shelf EQ by 4-5 dB and put a de-esser behind as well. Your mic has unpleasant characteristic and this should help you to mitigate that.

    I’m unsure if this is the same in other countries. But I’ve worked for McDonald’s in the UK since 2019. I must say, people don’t go just for a quick bite to eat anymore, customers are ordering £30 - £50 worth of food when they come through and it’s worrying.
    The job has increasingly got harder and harder, especially since our sales have almost doubled since we re opened after lockdown in 2020.
    People say McDonald’s is horrible and crap food, yet everyone is ordering it more now than they ever did… uk is getting like America.
    Friday nights used to be for the fish and chop shops and Sunday dinner time where spent at pubs for carvery’s. Now Friday nights and Sunday lunchtimes are so busy! What’s gone wrong with people 😢

    On the equipment
    Many repair parts for the equipment and such things like lights for fry stations aren't purchased through McDonald's, they are bought through many sources and yes repair parts can even be bought through places like Amazon

      It’s a good question! I think there are a lot of drivers there - socioeconomic, political, meta that push people to not subscribe to the “work 9-5, get a 401k, expect a company to reward you a cushy retirement for decades of service”. The reality is these are all just hunches and not a lot of hard data to back up. My gut is that covering Robin Hood or Coinbase in an episode might overlap these factors well but there aren’t many comparable public legacy stock brokerages that one could easily cross compare.

    I worked at McDonald’s during this time when the pico guac and the maple bacon came out and let me tell you the volume was crazy we always had lines and don’t get me started how many times I heard about sezchuan sauce
    The only thing that was a huge difference to me was the fresh never frozen quarter pounder it was a huge side by side difference every employee who tried it side by side could taste the difference

    McDonalds has a very large menu, which I think does put them at a disadvantage. Also, the menus and fry/cup sizes between different countries are very different, compared to restaurants like Five Guys. Finally, I do miss the Create Your Taste, but I knew back in the Spring/ Summer of 2016 that wasn’t going to last.

    There are so many different options here in the U.K. now. Jolibee and German donner kebab are now my faviourites. Saying that McDonald’s is good everyone once and a while. It’s what we all know

    20 years ago McD's had a 4 piece mozzerlla stick opntion on the $1 menu. It was pretty good. They also had the original chicken selects that were pretty damn good for McD's and was seemingly real chicken. The only problem was they were a bit pricy for a McD's item, even back then. The "reimagined" version just didn't seem the same tastewise.
    I was also recently in Japan and they have the "shaka shaka chicken". It is a cool concept and incredibly inexpense. It tasted great. The food there was pretty much all great but I still needed to go to their McDonalds once to try it out.

    Yeah I'm not surprised the celebrity meals have done so well. I'm just a casual K-pop fan (or Korean music in general; I'm also a fan of the Moranbong Band and Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble from North Korea because politics aside their groups are amazing) and even I got the BTS meal because I was intrigued with the sauce options since the sauces are only regularly available in McDonald's South Korea. Whenever they release an international item for American menus (like at their HQ restaurant in Chicago) the item is always popular because it peaks our interest. Which sparks demand.
    In the case of Szechuan sauce, that's what happened. It wasn't a partnership (the only fast food chain Rick & Morty partnered with was Wendy's), since the sauce existed way before Rick & Morty was a thing when it was released for Mulan. Fans were demanding McDonald's to bring back the sauce, and McDonald's answered the call. I got to try it on the latest time they brought it back. Is it a great sauce? Yes. But was it worth the drama the first time around? No, not at all.

    Limited editions (celebrity or not) have tended to be a popular in the UK. Some that come to mind are the katsu chicken nuggets with curry sauce, and the spicy chicken nuggets with the limited edition chilli sauce. I was drawn to McDonald’s to try the latter. It lived up to its claim but was manageable for me re the spice level.
    Also, the limited edition Mcflurries that tend to be seasonal! They always manage to get me spend at McDonald’s.
