About this video.
My first try with Ilford SFX 200 and printing on various papers.
I went to Newtown Creek to take a few photographs on SFX200 and O also took a roll of Ortho Plus.
I only shot a couple of scenes with intentions of bracketing my film as I didn't use a light meter with the pinhole camera. Kind of winged it using the sunny 16 rule for pinhole.
Still, I managed to get a few nice negs to print.

Difference between a normal red filter that you have and IR filter is that IR filters try to block light below certain nm range. Normal red filters let all light through. IR filters are super dark.

Haven’t done any printing for about twenty years, but the Ilford warm tone paper used to give nice results with ID-78 developer. As far as I am aware this developer was never available as a packaged product, only as a published formula, and you had to make it up yourself.

By deep red they mean a filter that blocks almost all visible light. Infra-red pass through filters look black when you try and hold them up to your eye and will only let through light below a certain wavelength and will give you the look that you were talking about. It will be many stops of sensitivity reduction and if you're shooting on a camera with a lens you'll have to adjust your focus point (the red dot on most older lenses).

I've used the SFX with an R72 filter and 5 stops of compensation myself. Loved the results! It's much brighter and less grainy than the Rollei Infrared.

Refreshing to watch good, down to earth videos like yours Roger. Yes you'll find MUCH extended exposure times with a true IR filter compared to your R2! Never tried SFX with that so I'll be interested to see how it performs, probably best left til spring/summer when there is leaf on the trees. Many years ago I used to shoot IR Ektachrome which was fun but highly unpredictable. I believe it was used extensively in wartime aerial photography, as dead branches/leaves placed over tanks and buildings would stand out from living foliage. All the best to you.

It behaves very much like true IR film just to a lesser degree. With an R72 (IR720) filter meter your scene at ISO 3 and off you go.

Thanks for the info Roger. I have been using masking tape too, the better quality blue stuff, but I thought it would lose its adhesion in time. Ok if you want to change the prints though. One problem I have is that my prints always develop wrinkles or kinks even if they are flat when I frame them. This is on RC paper. The problem is worse if they get warm. Your prints always look very good and you make it look so easy!
They can wrinkle over time. For best results (for your own home or hobby) is to buy self adhesive mount board and stick the print to it. Takes a bit of getting used to but keeps the print flat on free from wrinkles when framed. Of course, you wouldn't want to do this with an expensive print...

HOW ON EARTH DID I MISS THIS??!!!!
If you are doing any enlarging and want to get a good idea of exposure, especially if you have the lens stopped down to f8 or f11 to give (usually) the best optical/lens results and with enough time to do some careful dodging or burning, use this technique to create a test strip for contacts or enlargements but with a slight difference. Make your timings in this sequence 2 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16. This will give you TOTALS of 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 seconds, which makes them one f stop apart.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I did Photography at Uni in the early 80's and was taught it there, although it seemed to be a common practice with other photographers I knew at the time. I moved from photography to flogging Apple Macs (I still do) about 86 but I remember the name Gene Nocon. Pretty sure he didn't invent it as the library at Uni had several old books that described it to the level I have. A Google search reveals his book came out in 1987 but I never read it.
@@johnblagden5625 Interesting John. I used to use f stop printing for some time but I slipped out of the habit. Its a good method.
Have more of this in the fridge, shot the Rolli with 35mm the SFX is in 120 probably will shoot it with the Mamyia 645.

Brilliant pinhole shots Roger. My enlarger uses a filament bulb (regular light globe), and I find if I do 6 x 1 sec pops for a test strip it doesn't mean the same amount of exposure as 6 secs continuous. I assume this is to do with warm up time of the bulb. To measure my test strips more accurately I find I am better off setting the enlarger timer to 6 seconds and then moving the paper each second to expose the strip. I expect better enlargers don't have this issue, mine is a cheap and cheerful one :)

May I ask what tape you use to secure your prints when framing? Also what tape do you use to seal the back of the frame? I have used gummed tape that you have to wet, but find that it dries out and comes unstuck.

Thanks. I actually use just decorators masking tape. If I ever sell a framed print it goes off the the framers. But for home I just buy frames and Matt myself. And usually change the prints over a few times a year.

A quick darkroom tech question - I noticed you are reusing your paper developer, can you share any more detail on that (what developer, how many reuses, etc) please? I am currently using Dektol 1:2 one shot dillution, but pour it out after each session. Many thanks!

Cheers Paul. It's just pointing it in the right direction. Best part is seeing the negs and how well you composed the shot. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes nailed it.
Watching you in the darkroom is like watching a baby being born.
I know this is a couple years late but.... Street Photography is traditionally people on the street. People are the subject. Townscapes or cityscapes are simply buildings in town or city. People can be present, but they are not the subject. The buildings are the subject. Cheers!
Interesting topic Ron. Street Photography is generally associated with people, agreed. I was recently in Bahrain. Walking the streets. Some photographs had people in, some did not and I took photographs of decayed shops and signs and back alleys, street pigeons and the general feel for where I was. To me it was all street photography. I also took "Portraits" of people I thought looked interesting, with their permission. Is that Street Portraiture? Or Street Photography? Interesting thought. *edited* After a read up it's classed as Urban!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss my understanding is that when I take a photo of someone in public, with their permission, it’s considered a “Street Portrait“. Random people living and doing without noticing me is true “street photography”. I also do both. Ona side note: When you ask people nicely, they almost always say yes. :). 🍻

Hi, short question. Why does my Mamiya 7ii show "normal" exposures to shoot with the infrared 645 filter and everybody suggests to shoot 1s exposure?
Hey Roman. I've never used that filter or any iR filter. . A man to ask is Steve Onions. He shoots iR a lot.
