Yaaaay, was just about to ask: Could you please do a (fully modded) df64 with SSP HU vs. The Lagom P64 HU? Would be much appreciated! (Plus, have you seen the recent anti static declumper version?) Cheers
Excellent! When comparing popular more affordable grinders it’s definitely helpful to compare not just the stock model but also what the performance and workflow can be like with a few commonly available mods and adjustments. In some cases a few mods can drastically improve the experience and it can totally change the relative value proposition when comparing against much more expensive higher end grinders, which is ] helpful and interesting for people making buying decisions.
I just received my DF64 and it came with the dial ring indicator! I messaged the seller in Canada for something else and pointed out that they should indicate it comes with it since it's a cool feature. They told me they just received this new batch and it came with it, they were just as surprised than I was! So my guess is the new version of the DF64 comes with this dial indicator stock!
I’ve got all those upgrades on my df64 but just wanna note that sometimes coffee beans can get caught between the top lip of the anti pop corn and bellows riffle. Especially if the beans are smaller. No biggie, can just flick them out with your finger or just use the bellows to push them out. Also one other mod I do have is the lid for the bellows. I use the cover for a pringles potato chip can. That way can see down into hopper. Learned that from CY Cafe Martella.
I purchased the DF64 a year ago and I have 3D printed everyone of the modification you mentioned and also the declumper modification that CY designed with the plastic stencil. In addition I upgraded the burrs to the SSP High Uniformity espresso burrs and purchased a decal to place over the ring collar to be able to place the zero point back to 6 o’clock. When I installed the SSP burrs the zero point was all the way to about 3 o’clock. That was driving me crazy. I know it’s just up in my head, a visual issue only. Now my DF64 is working much better than when I got it! I would say that the biggest frustration I had with this grinder was the coffee clogging on the original declumper. The stencil replacement has work well! I usually vacuum up the chute to prevent accumulation of coffee behind the new declumper. I also have a Niche and I find it has a much better work flow specifically out of the box. I plan to keep both the Niche and the DF64 but if I had to keep only one of the it’s the Niche!
I'd be curious to know why you would choose the Niche over the DF64. Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the DF64 gives you more clarity between the different flavor notes in the coffee.
@@LorenzoNW I prefer most of my espresso with fuller body. The Niche produces fuller body than the DF64 even with the High Uniformity espresso burrs. There are some lighter coffees that I would use the DF64, but 7 out 10 times I go with the Niche. It’s a matter of preference.
I just got my DF64 with SSP HU (third hand..). My espresso dialing is from 2 to 5 for medium roast (4-6 on dark roast) of the 60 positions, which is very few. Do you have the same settings with SSP HU burrs? The original burrs (which I did not receive) in the videos shows 10 - 20 clicks on the collar. I've aligned to 0 of course, when the burrs are just not touching each other. Thanks!
@@KyleRowsell picked up the v2. Figured the upgrade kit would be a better deal than the price of the v3 at some point. Also- where did do you get your YHWH gear?
I agree that the declumper mod might be the most impactful mod to do. However I didn't want to have acetate in the grind path because it has a relatively low melting point and would probably degrade with the grinds passing it. Instead I got 1/16 inch silicone sheet from Amazon (cheap) and cut out a Mythos-style declumper. It is food safe, heat stable (it's used to make pressure cooker gaskets), abrasion resistant, and the same thickness as the stock declumper (important so the mounting screws don't poke into the grind chamber). On modding in general, while it would be nice if a grinder were perfect out of box, I don't believe there is a grinder available that is. Even the Niche, which is widely cited as having an amazing workflow, most folks will then add a puffer to it. The nice part about the DF64 is how easy a platform it is to mod and the number of mods already available for it. The same can't be said for some Breville or Eureka grinders that have similar issues but are too compactly engineered to allow for mods. My 2 cents
Good tips! I just cut out most of the declumper, seems to work, probably would be messier if I didn't have a custom funnel /collar thing. Niche doesn't really NEED the little puffer. I liked the Specialita without any mods besides a single dose hopper, I had a bellows that worked well with it but didn't even use the bellows usually, it did have some retention but I didn't find it enough to be problematic. I like when you put in 18g and get out close to 18g I think with a bellows most grinders seem more inconsistent in dosing output, but that probably doesn't apply to all grinders.
@@lilsayntness "On modding in general, while it would be nice if a grinder were perfect out of box, I don't believe there is a grinder available that is." OP didn't say anything about the price.
Tbh I'd recommend just removing the declumper all together and use rdt to reduce static and wdt to get rid of the clumps. The reduced resistance will reduce regrinding and improve grind uniformity
This was good to see! I have all but the declumper of these mods! I’ve Never had issues in this area. All the other mods do improve your workflow. 👍 It’s my daily grinder! The base is a game changer though. I love it and it also hides the chords.
I've had all these mods on my DF64 except the dosing cup attachment for a while and they are really nice to have, but I completely removed the de-clumper and I prefer it. If you utilize RDT and WDT (for espresso) techniques then clumping really isn't and issue. Also the grinds come out way quicker and the static is way lower.
Ah you’re too kind. I wish these were my ideas but they’re not. I’ve linked many resources in the description that should help and give credit where due.
That fact that all these modifications are so valuable is evidence that the grinder really needs another revision to be a great choice. If feels like folks are going crazy for a quality grind result, but everything else really isn't that special.
For many people it's not worth 3x the price when you can fix the shortcomings with a few 3d printed cheap parts and a a few minutes to install the declumper. Sure it could use a revision, but as it is, it's still one of the best values, and that's why it's popular and still a great choice today.

I use that base and really like it. Not gonna lie though, my portafilter fork design is much better and so is my anti-popcorn funnel. The fork is completely replaced and it locks in the dosing cup and still fits a 58mm portafilter. Angle is adjusted to work with the base. Anti-popcorn funnel doesn’t wobble around like this one and the walls are steeper, so beans don’t get stuck.

Just a few observations/comments about the modifications (for those on a budget): 1) Mod 1: I've never actually had any static issue with mine, which was surprising, seeing how much chaf youtubers seem to have. My theory is that it's due to differing climates. A more humid environment like mine probably induces less static charge (because science), which may explain the static issue. - That being said, a cheaper solution could be to just spray your beans with a bit of water before grinding. 2) Mod 2: If you dont really care too much about aesthetics, or just dont like how the ring looks (like myself), just place a sticker on the metal chamber above the markings, or draw a line with a permanent marker.
Which for those that can control it in the interior of their homes can increase humidity if they have a module for that and reduce static in the interior of their house which would also assist this. use a small humidifier near your coffee station possibly... like a personal size you use on a desk
Got a df64 for work, recently purchased all these mods (but the chute hack which I will try), it helped a lot in increasing the consistency and quality of my shots. The one thing I do not recommend with this one is to rdr /spray a tiny bit of water on the beans beforehand as it ended up in clogging the burrs (in commercial setting) so to get those mods to get less messy ground coffee was a huge improvement. Curious how this compares to other single dose flat burrs grinders
I realize it is a bit of an apple and oranges comparison, but I'm curious of the flavor comparison between a df64 and the 1zpresso k series grinders. I have really enjoyed the k-pro for pour over and espresso, but I like the idea of an electric option that will offer a complementary profile.
Interesting. They are very different. And if honest I may prefer the style of burr from 1zpresso for filter to the ssp unimodals since I do love a bit extra sweetness and a tad complexity in my coffee. But I may be alone in this. In fact c40 is my personal fav.
All upgrades make sense I would say. Two questions/concerns: 1. With the additional 10% incline, how stable does the dosing cup sit on the holders when the grinder is on and there are vibrations? 2. How do varying degrees of tilt affect grind distribution? Obviously, we want gravity to pull the grinds out of the grind chamber. However at the same time gravity shifts beans towards the front of the grinder. I would be interested to know if varying degrees of tilt have an effect on grind size (fines) or maybe as well on how stable the grinder runs as it is creating additional sheer forces.
I really like this dosing ramp thing:5180158, but you do need the rubber on the forks. It also holds the cafelat robot baskets so that's convenient. I went with this thing:5232881 as my anti popcorn, and it is great, perhaps it could be better. I also think it looks great :)
Such small mods that makes a huge difference for little price differences. Just wish it would be easier to find cause most people won't even bother having to mess around. That make you wonder who are the clown designing this grinder in the first place and if they even test or have their prototype reviewed by anyone before mass production...
I have gotten most of the parts you mention here but I am still considering the 10-degree tilt base. Does that make a lot of difference in retention? Does it affect the alignment of the burrs?
How are you using your grind indicator (I have one coming)? I thought it was to point at the zero/touch point, but yours looks to be around 55 on the collar. Great video, as always!
As a company making grinders you literally don't need to hire someone to design and think of updates for the next version of your grinder. The community literally does it for you.
There's a few different cup holder mods and I do agree, that's the most important one if you care about preventing mess. It works fine without it but when you hit the bellows you'll get overspray. There's also custom funnels / collars you can get for it. That dial indicator I'm not a fan of, the few I tried either were too tight or too loose, couldn't get it right there are better designs. I don't think knowing the grind size really matters too much since it's all relative but it is helpful if you're going from one coffee to an other and they dial in differently or going to different brew methods back and forth. Ok I guess it is helpful :D Anti-popcorn mod you don't really 'need' but it does help prevent a mess up top and allows for 'hot loading' if you want to do that. I've found some DF64s are better than others in regards to their declumpers, it's hit or miss. I had one that seemed like it held back more coffee (bellows had more resistance) so I cut a hole in the declumper it works fine but I have a custom funnel so it's not messy, without it I think it might be messier. I haven't tried the base mods, but I've heard some people have had worse results with more of an incline, I forget what the issue was I think they were saying it clogs up more but if you modded the declumper maybe that avoids that issue, I've also heard one person claim it helps with alignment... but I'm skeptical :D
Doesn’t make sense that these rather simple mods haven’t already become incorporated into this grinder by the manufacturer and of course a slight increase in price. They could improve their reputation ( practically ready to use right out of the box along with customer savings of both money and time ) and increase profits ( thru efficiency in mass production ). Somewhat suspicious that this isn’t already being done by them
Thanks for the review... how do you handle the declumper issues? do you cut it? or it is not as big a problem as it looks, another question... do you know if SSP unimodal multi purpose is the same as the SSP red speed burr multi purpose? I am consider to buy the DF64 V4 with SSP unimodal multi purpose, would you think that it allows a pour over quality like the Fellow ODE?
I wish they'd just make them perfect or close to perfect from the beginning.. If these are 'low cost' then the companys (no matter which one and not just specifically to this one) should design them well from the start. IMHO...
I've used my df64 daily for 6 months. It's great. I use the stock declimper, but have the mods you are talking about. Not sure how you got all that mess with the df64. I don't have anything like that. I have a negligible amount of mess
The stock declumper is your answer. Just modified mine this weekend and wow, what a mess. Now waiting for an Etsy 3d printed version so I can use it again without the mess, also rdt eliminates the issue if used
Helps if you tell people if you're doing just espresso, coarser brew methods such as pour over or both. Also if you like mostly light, medium or dark roast coffee. If you're just doing espresso, I think stock burrs are fine.
This reminds me of why I stopped running Linux on my laptop. Just give me something that works out of the box, gah. I don't want to have to hand roll 50 mods just to make something usable.
@@KyleRowsell I'll be honest, the only two machines I can think of is the Gaggia Classic Pro and the Rancilio Silvia because those are the two machines I am looking at currently the most. I am still debating on which espresso machine to purchase as my current coffee collection only includes a French Press, Moka Pot, and a V60. It also does not make it easy picking a nice machine when the budget for a good machine is so high too and takes up so much countertop space.
WOOF the grinder is selling for $385 right now. That's frustrating because I don't need it (I think) and I'm happy with my Eureka Mignon Notte (I think)
Niche is great, but a very different grinder, having both (or Niche with a Lagom P64 if you want a nice grinder that doesn't really need 'mods' ) is ideal to cover every type of coffee and brew method basically :D
@@rommiemex9532 If you like high flavour clarity but lower body espresso shots for light roasts df64 or similar grinder is better for that but you'll get tasty results on niche too.
Watch his videos too, but Mignon grinders are generally a bit quieter, Specialita is pretty quiet, I thought it's about the same as a Niche Zero. The new Eureka Oro SD mignon grinder is louder than the Specialita I found. Eureka Atom grinders are probably up there with the most quiet grinders. DF64 is pretty typical, not excessively loud, coming from a Sette DF64 will be nicer sounding and quieter for sure though.
Hey Kyle, i am having big problems with the DF64 when grinding Filter at around „64“ and trying to switch to finer for espresso afterwards. Prior the zero point was somewhat below 0 in the middle/center down, but after grinding for filter on „64“ it shifted to 50 and prevents me to go finder without opening the mill up and cleaning it completely. Somehow bigger chunks of coffeebean seem to get stuck somewhere, causing the burrs to change alignment. Thinking about returning the DF64, because honestly that‘s what i have been buying it for - being able to switch fast between filter and espresso. Did you notice anything simular and might the Niche Zero be an alternative that doesn‘t have that Problem?
First off, sorry this has happened to you. Second I’ve never faced this issue. Most grinders ask you to grind while going finer to avoid this issue. Did you do that? The niche does not have this issue. At least, I’ve never faced it. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the quick answer! I went finer with the mill running and that solved the problem, so i assume it had to be stuck parts of beans. It just sounds somewhat simular to the burrs touching… anyway if anyone has the same problem and tries this fix please make really sure that you know where the touching point of the burrs is and dont go further to prevent damage. Keep on the good work Kyle! Appreciate every new video :) Greetings from Germany
If you are just looking to trim the stock anti-clump thing, you can access that by removing the bottom burr. If you are trying to replace it completely, yes, that is a pain.
1. Just get a taller dosing metal cup or glass jar. 2. Settings - just put a dot using a permanent marker 3. Popcorn - just get a silicone or plastic cover 4. Static - why not just use the Ross droplet technique? 5. Pitch? Refer to #1 above.
Idk who needs to hear this, but I’ve tried just about every one of these (besides the clump buster) and none of these “dFsIxTy4 mOdS” solved any problems I have with this grinder. I have no issue with overspray The little grid size guide ring just blocks your view from seeing the number. Thus making it worse to dial in. I have no popcorning issues. I did not replace the clump buster because the grind consistency from this grinder is already absolutely amazing. I get less than 1 gram of retention already, so who cares. So little retention I removed the bellows and no longer use them. I changed the burrs to Multi Purpose burrs and the machine doesn’t sound as good. Maybe louder definitely “whiney-er” (higher pitch). Unimodal // flat bur theories are snake oil if you are adding any amount of milk to your espresso. You can pull chocolate bomb full body shots on Unimodal burrs. You can pull light sparkly shots on conicals. The difference between the SSPs and the stock blades is all in your head. Chill out, don’t ruin a perfectly amazing grinder.
The DF64 will return in an upcoming comparison… 👀

Such small mods that makes a huge difference for little price differences. Just wish it would be easier to find cause most people won't even bother having to mess around. That make you wonder who are the clown designing this grinder in the first place and if they even test or have their prototype reviewed by anyone before mass production...
I have gotten most of the parts you mention here but I am still considering the 10-degree tilt base. Does that make a lot of difference in retention? Does it affect the alignment of the burrs?
Cool!
It’s annoying to have to mod a fairly expensive kit with something so easy and cheap to fix out of the factory.
Dat holder should come standard for DF 64
A lot of these things should come standard
Can you please do the same for the eureka mignon?
Thanks for the video Kyles! It was really helpful, I just ordered a DF64 and wondering where you got the modification 1 - dosing cup riser in white?
The colour is all dependant on your 3d printer! I had mine printed by a friend
Ok I guess it is helpful :D
Anti-popcorn mod you don't really 'need' but it does help prevent a mess up top and allows for 'hot loading' if you want to do that.
Love this feedback Ben! All the best!
I'm just running it with no declumper, makes a mess if you don't rdt but it's not an issue to me since I always do it
I’ve tried this too. For me the mess was too much on coarser filter settings. So I found the mythos mod a good hybrid.
Somewhat suspicious that this isn’t already being done by them
Great tips. How good safe do you think these 3d prints are?
Thanks for the review... how do you handle the declumper issues? do you cut it? or it is not as big a problem as it looks, another question... do you know if SSP unimodal multi purpose is the same as the SSP red speed burr multi purpose? I am consider to buy the DF64 V4 with SSP unimodal multi purpose, would you think that it allows a pour over quality like the Fellow ODE?
Hmmm, this vs a Vario + 🤔 All comes down to shot quality for me…
If one wdts, is declumper still necessary?
It’s less necessary but I still enjoy having it for coarser grind settings and dry climates. To each their own.
How did you get these things in white (like the stand and the new dosing cup holder)? The links and searches they seem to be in black.
@kyle love these mods! Why is a declumper necessary when we WDT our grinds anyway?
Static is a large consideration
I wish they'd just make them perfect or close to perfect from the beginning.. If these are 'low cost' then the companys (no matter which one and not just specifically to this one) should design them well from the start. IMHO...
Agreed. And I believe with time we will get there. But we’re currently not so this is our next best option.
do you like to anti popcorning funnel better than the Niche Zero anti popcorning disc?
No. The niche wins when it comes to workflow and ease of use.
I've used my df64 daily for 6 months. It's great. I use the stock declimper, but have the mods you are talking about.
Not sure how you got all that mess with the df64. I don't have anything like that. I have a negligible amount of mess
Probably coarser grind with no RDT
The stock declumper is your answer. Just modified mine this weekend and wow, what a mess. Now waiting for an Etsy 3d printed version so I can use it again without the mess, also rdt eliminates the issue if used
Did you change your mic or audio stuff recently? Sounds a bit treble-y to me.
Which type of burr should I get? Planning on getting this one!
That’s a hard question to answer without context. Mind sharing your preferences?
If you're willing to upgrade your burr, it's hard not to recommend the SSP Multi-Purpose burr.
Helps if you tell people if you're doing just espresso, coarser brew methods such as pour over or both. Also if you like mostly light, medium or dark roast coffee.
If you're just doing espresso, I think stock burrs are fine.
Dude, SLAY me please
I’m not sure what this means lol
@@KyleRowsell hopefully it means they’re excited to see the Slayer review… or you’ve wandered into the weirder side of the Internet 😆
*Murders Mike V with a DF64*
Can I remove the de-clumper, if using WDT (to manually break clumps)?
Yes you can! I prefer having both but if you'd rather avoid modding then yes it's an option
This reminds me of why I stopped running Linux on my laptop. Just give me something that works out of the box, gah. I don't want to have to hand roll 50 mods just to make something usable.
Totally fair. While not everyone feels this way I can understand this thinking.
If you are doing mods, would you show some mods for Espresso machines?
Any machines in particular?
It is a bargain for what’s offered no doubt
Just ordered a Niche Zero. I kinda don't want to do mods. I just want it to work lol
Niche is great, but a very different grinder, having both (or Niche with a Lagom P64 if you want a nice grinder that doesn't really need 'mods' ) is ideal to cover every type of coffee and brew method basically :D
@@BensCoffeeRants fair enough. Although I exclusively drink espresso, so the appeal of a more dynamic grinder doesn't really appeal to me
@@rommiemex9532 If you like high flavour clarity but lower body espresso shots for light roasts df64 or similar grinder is better for that but you'll get tasty results on niche too.
Will the df64 bellows fit a lagom mini? I am having trouble finding one for the mini.
likely not. Maybe the levercraft bellows?
@@KyleRowsell thanks!
how loud is this compared to say a Eureka Mingon? I have a sette which is way too loud and am looking for something else
I have a full comparison of these two grinders!
I’ve got a good idea , why not get a grinder that works in the first place!!!!!
Because they’re expensive 😓
when I realize how much "work" it is just to get to the chute I said F... it.
what a weird choice of a design...
If you are just looking to trim the stock anti-clump thing, you can access that by removing the bottom burr. If you are trying to replace it completely, yes, that is a pain.
@@adammacfarland6415 yes it’s a bit of a job. Takes about 10 minutes if you’re willing to attempt it.
Not a bad video but please give more credit to those who developed the mods by naming names, especially Caffe Martella in Singapore.
1. Just get a taller dosing metal cup or glass jar.
2. Settings - just put a dot using a permanent marker
3. Popcorn - just get a silicone or plastic cover
4. Static - why not just use the Ross droplet technique?
5. Pitch? Refer to #1 above.
omg mod 4. There's better options.
seems like too much work and it doesn't look good. I think I'd just get a better grinder
Fair enough. to each their own
You should not have to do this. It’s shows a bad design
Maybe. But just trying to help those on a budget make a grinder slightly better.
Idk who needs to hear this, but I’ve tried just about every one of these (besides the clump buster) and none of these “dFsIxTy4 mOdS” solved any problems I have with this grinder.
I have no issue with overspray
The little grid size guide ring just blocks your view from seeing the number.
