    I read Barbara's book about her ordeal, "83 Hours Til Dawn" when I was in grade school. It frightened the hell out of me, as I have always been claustrophobic. That photo of her with the sign has always haunted me as well.

    How in the name of all things good in the world does a kidnapper who buries someone alive get only TEN YEARS in prison with a LIFE sentence?????? Needless to say, the second he was free, he went on a million crime sprees.

    • @danielsass1826
      @danielsass1826 2 года назад +8

      As messed up as it is their is a reason. They have to leave some incentive to leave the victim alive. If the sentences are the same they will figure they might as well kill the victim bc it's the most likely way to get caught if they are gonna get life anyway these psychopaths won't leave witnesses

    • @DANGARANGS
      @DANGARANGS 2 года назад +12

      @@LaffeeTaffeeGG Sadly the American prison system usually worsens the situation. The prison system isnt incentivized to keep people out, or rehabilitate criminals. On top of that, the techicalities and semantics of law almost always prevent the court system from charging someone beyond the legal boundaries. If so it becomes a slippery slope. Just glad that the story had an ending where Barbera survived, and the perp got caught.

His license got suspended a couple years later because he didn't disclose a disciplinary action against him.

    Yo!!!! Happy ending all around!!! I was on the edge of my seat though!! Small confined spaces freak me out. I get anywhere close to a small enclosed space and I start losing my breath. I even learned being strapped down and unable to move on my own, has the same affect. (Arms were stretched out and strapped at the wrist when I had my C-section, something they don’t tell you about before hand) and my greatest fear is drowning. Not just any way of drowning, open water doesn’t scare me. It’s the fear of being stuck inside of something filled with water and slowly filling up or running out of air before finding the way out. So basically drowning in small enclosed spaces.

      My nightmare way to die would be to slide head first down a pipe slightly larger than my body which is on a 45 degree angle with water at the bottom. Completely irrational I know but it's always been that. And when I was young I would frequently jump on the backs of alligators in the swamp at night to wrestle with them and see their reaction. Had a gun to my head twice. I even actually drowned 3 separate times where I had to be resuscitated. But that irrational ass pipe in the ground seriously haunts my dreams on a regular basis. I hope it isn't some kind of foreshadowing.

    • @Seekingheros

      @@Dakestheman hahahaha I can relate. The story about John Jones and the Nutty Putty cave, gave me so much anxiety that it made my body hurt and my I felt like I couldn’t get a deep breath, just listening to it. Listening to those kinds of stories take me a while to get through because I have to stop when the anxiety gets bad and get my shit together before I can carry on. I know I will never purposely put myself in a situation like that but now it’s my stupid kids I worry about. They haven’t lived long enough to be aware of just how dangerous everything can be and they still have that “ carpe diem “ oh wait, my bad, I believe they say “yolo”.

    • @Seekingheros
      @Seekingheros 2 года назад

      @@Dakestheman also, that’s a pretty interesting life you are living. I myself have never considered even once what kind of thoughts or reactions a crocodile might have about anything. Certainly not what it would think if I just jumped on its back and challenged it to a wrestling match.
      Ps. Stop drowning.

      @@Seekingheros Yeah that nutty putty cave incident messed with me bad the first time I heard it. An ex tried to get me to watch a movie about by saying it was something else... That's not the whole reason she's an ex but it didn't help. And the gators... I just liked to show people how crazy it was that an 8 to 10 ft long literal killing machine freaks out when a little 5'9" guy jumps on it and slaps it in the face... Just have to be sure you're fast enough to get back in the boat before it's tiny brain realizes it just missed an easy meal hah. Also it was 100% my dad's fault every time I filled my lungs with water, but he knew how to get it back out quickly enough... I was 6 the last time, 37 now. And I must say that I'm not even remotely interested in showing people how to scare alligators anymore. YOLO after all right?

      I've been extremely claustrophobic since I can remember. Elevators make me nervous. I worked on the 15th floor of an office bldg for a couple years and it was packed at 5:01 p.m.! I can't sit in the back of a two-door, have to be on an aisle seat in an airplane or a theater. I would have tried to gouge their eyes out, but I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs, so I feel for Barbara.
      ( Years of therapy & we think my condition is because my Dad would wrestle with me when I was a young boy & he held me down way after I couldn't take it anymore. He too was a big man & I was just a skinny kid. This was always after dinner, so he had a martini or two and a beer or two along with a huge meal in his sytem. Thanks dad.)

      @@mrd3016 you and I are so much alike. I don't do elevators, the back seat of a 2 door car, small rooms and bathrooms with the doors closed or anything similar. I can't even begin to imagine being buried alive. I want to be cremated just so even dead I'm not in a box for eternity. I have no clue where it comes from. But having a bad back that requires an MRI every year doesn't help. I have to be completely knocked out to be put in the machine. It's an all-day ordeal, but my doctor saw 1st hand why I have to be sedated. They didn't give a strong enough dose and I woke up screaming bloody murder and trying to get out. I broke a toe kicking at the top of the opening trying to get off the sliding table. I was then knocked out completely and they were able to complete the tests. I grew up in and around Decatur, still live in Atlanta, and I have never heard this story! Well done, sir.

    Omg ! I live in Atlanta and recognize all the streets talked about. December 17 ,1968 is one day before my first birthday.
    Wow. Never heard this story.

    Random comment but those Key Biscayne hotel & villas are/were just beautiful. I stayed there one summer with my family (as a little kid) in a villa.
    But I guess, when you’re a little kid, absolutely anywhere with a swimming pool is awesome.
