In all honesty, I'm not a Swiftie but I'm glad she referenced the song because Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile is one of the greatest vocalists ever & it was sad to see him playing the lottery.
To those of you that discovered this because of the Taylor Swift lyrics: her giving these guys a shout-out is one of the coolest things she's ever done (at least in my book). The Blue Nile innovated so much. They have sadly become a footnote in popular music history. Their music can be a little challenging, but the technology and recording techniques they innovated in the 80s made a lot of modern music possible. True, they weren't the only ones, Thomas Dolby's work on Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen was another big deal in terms of digital and synth production, but The Nile made another giant leap with Hats. Please don't let these guys' music die with your generation! They literally made the production techniques that Taylor herself has likely used possible! Even if the style isn't your cup of tea, it's worth giving them a shot just to show appreciation.
I am an 80s kid and thought I had not heard them. Saw it was referenced in one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs off the TTPD album. Turns out my husband who is also an 80s kid has a few songs in his insanely long 76 hour playlist and turns out I have heard them before. Very cool vibe this song.

One year ago, this weekend, this beautiful song played at our wedding reception, at a 1920's mansion in the heart of Chicago. My new wife and I were outside together at night, with the lights twinkling and illuminating the grounds. The guests inside, as we held each other and this song played softly in the October Chicago night.
I went to school in Glasgow in the late 80s. I bought this record in '89 from the HMV on Argyle Street. It is a desert island disc for sure. I can't actually pit into words how important "Hats" is to me and my memory place. When I hear these songs I'm 15 again, falling in love with that city and my first ever girlfriend, my best friend and Scotland. Sublime.
Weird . . . Glasgow is one of those places whose name evokes incredibly complex images . . . and music. This music sounds like what a Glasgow band might do . . . like Prefab Sprout . . . I WISH I COULD ENTER YOUR MIND TO SEE THE MEMORIES YOU HAVE . . .

I'm Scottish myself, and am old enough to remember buying this on vinyl when it came out. Classic album and a great, very much underrated band. The album this comes from 'Hats' is fantastic. This song is very much an ode to the city of Glasgow at night, in the rain. The city of my birth. So nice to see a new generation of potential fans!

I love when one artist sends you on a magical journey of hearing what you haven't heard, seeing what you haven't seen, and knowing what you didn't know. Memories shared, legendary. Downtown lights reminds me of sitting atop a hillside overlooking the city as much as it reminds me of an early morning walk before daybreak. Peaceful, hauntingly beautiful.
Raised on this song! Parents are from Glasgow and mum and I went on a the blue nile listening marathon just a few days before that TBN lyric came out. My mum was in Glasgow then taking care of her mum and it made me cry because I thought about my mum and how much I love her. Big TS fan and big fan of TBN too. My parents and I were so happy.🤍🤍Always come back to this.
This band should never have been left by the wayside. This is absolutely phenomenal songwriting, instrumentation, production. Everything is just pure “Walking home after a long night with a view of the city lights and you’re contemplating your life” vibe 24 years old and I love The Blue Nile, one of Scotland’s greatest bands even if they’re a hidden gem.
Love seeing peoples curioisity and appreciation of music help them discover "new" things (me included!) Thanks to this fanbase for being welcoming and encouraging!
51 years I been on this planet, immersed in music, yet it took my 33 year old pal to turn me on to The Blue Nile. Dear God, I'm so amazed at the feels this tune produces. Yep, instant fan.
Here because it's one year since my wonderful Father left this world. Had the pleasure of seeing them live at the Belfast Opera house with him years ago ❤
Who's afraid of little old Tay, ❤❤ she can use her power for good too, it's simple, ultimate in matches energy! She gives what she gets!! ❤❤ here we all are sampling this song, some for the first time. Guilty as Sin!!❤❤
I am amazed at how perfectly well you can sing guilty as sin over this song, the rhythm is perfectly in sync, i can see how taylor couldn't get it out her head and it became the soundtrack to the emotional affair she describes in her song
Paul's entire catalogue is about as perfect as it gets. Beautiful, lovelorn and filling you and emptying you all at once. The end of this song where he works himself up into frenzy culminating in that line "I'm tired of crying on the stairs" encapsulates the Blue Nile's entire career.
Right, the devastating end of this song when Paul's screaming crumbles down is just perfect, just like the end of ' Yvonne gets dumped' by American music club.
David Draiman of Disturbed praised TS for her song writing and as a fan of Blue Nile he isn't wrong, she gets it. Good on you TS for bringing your fans here, check out Blue Nile's back catalogue you won't be disappointed 🎶
I was first introduced to Blue Nile in October 1990 while at uni in New Brunswick, Canada. My friend gave me his copy of Hats, and I played the cassette on my Walkman while walking on the Tantemarr Marshes on a cloudy October afternoon. I feel the clean, cold air and hear the sounds of the wooden boards creeking under my hiking boots, and ducks flying overhead when I re-listen this song.
'I'm tired of crying on the stairs' is one of the hardest punches in lyrical history. The hopes and dreams that are laid out in the rest of the song all become suddenly real, and the revelation of what they were really about slaps when that delivery arrives. Heartbreakingly masterful.
Black hats from this album are represented by all the typists in the background of the Fortnight video when she is sitting at the typewriter. This was about Matty Healy. You’re welcome❤
Saw Blue Mile live at Birmingham Town Hall not long after Hats was released. Stunning sound live! Best concert ever!!! So humble. When they'd finished the set and the audience wouldn't stop applauding ang giving a standing ovation. Paul Buchanan said they'd nothing else to play but they could play the whole set again if we'd like!! Like you're gonna say no!!!!!! Best kept secret!!!
I was there too. Paul said sorry nothing else to play so they replayed " I walk across the rooftops" as the encore. It still gives me goosebumps now, thinking of that perfect evening :)

Chimney tops and trumpets
The golden lights, the loving prayers
The colored shoes, the empty trains
I'm tired of crying on the stairs
The downtown lights
Yeah, yeah
That's a great song ever!!!!
@@octoberlianr.4030 hello. Thats. Right. !
I always thought it was "The neon signs, the cigarettes" but now I'm not sure sure
Swiftie here and I'm loving this ❤
This entire album is a masterpiece!
So true.
They all are.x
For Sure.
Drowning in the Blue Nile… yes!
One of the best songs EVER.
Agree 😉
THIS ONE AND SOUL BOY
Defo
The best song ever!
matty’s taste in music 🔥
Raised on this song! Parents are from Glasgow and mum and I went on a the blue nile listening marathon just a few days before that TBN lyric came out. My mum was in Glasgow then taking care of her mum and it made me cry because I thought about my mum and how much I love her. Big TS fan and big fan of TBN too. My parents and I were so happy.🤍🤍Always come back to this.
This band should never have been left by the wayside.
This is absolutely phenomenal songwriting, instrumentation, production. Everything is just pure “Walking home after a long night with a view of the city lights and you’re contemplating your life” vibe
24 years old and I love The Blue Nile, one of Scotland’s greatest bands even if they’re a hidden gem.
Love seeing peoples curioisity and appreciation of music help them discover "new" things (me included!) Thanks to this fanbase for being welcoming and encouraging!
In my 40s and I love lots of 80s music. But I'm only here because of Taylor, because unfortunately I've never heard this before.
51 years I been on this planet, immersed in music, yet it took my 33 year old pal to turn me on to The Blue Nile.
Dear God, I'm so amazed at the feels this tune produces. Yep, instant fan.
This tune suddenly comes to my head with pleasure, after 25 years.
I discovered this song a few days ago after a recommendation on facebook & I just can't stop playing it. It moves me to tears. Absolutely wonderful.
“In love we’re all the same, we’re walking down an empty street” has to be some of the most brilliant lyrical poetry I’ve ever heard
Blue Nile are a great band, who are underrated and under played, glad their getting the recognition they deserve 😊
How can anyone fail to love this band and this song.
OMG Thanks to mother Taylor now The Blue Nile is here in my life
❤
I’m so glad Taylor introduced me to this amazing band that somehow slipped under my radar back in 89. ❤️🔥
So glad to have been introduced to this art. Ty TTPD
Sorry Taylor I couldn’t wait, but wow.
Very nice comment. Very well articulated
I agree with you
Couldn't Agree With You More.
David Draiman of Disturbed praised TS for her song writing and as a fan of Blue Nile he isn't wrong, she gets it. Good on you TS for bringing your fans here, check out Blue Nile's back catalogue you won't be disappointed 🎶
Here before it blows up. #ttpd
I was first introduced to Blue Nile in October 1990 while at uni in New Brunswick, Canada. My friend gave me his copy of Hats, and I played the cassette on my Walkman while walking on the Tantemarr Marshes on a cloudy October afternoon. I feel the clean, cold air and hear the sounds of the wooden boards creeking under my hiking boots, and ducks flying overhead when I re-listen this song.
anyone else here after that lyric in guilty as sin - FAV TRACK BTW
'I'm tired of crying on the stairs' is one of the hardest punches in lyrical history.
The hopes and dreams that are laid out in the rest of the song all become suddenly real, and the revelation of what they were really about slaps when that delivery arrives.
Heartbreakingly masterful.
Black hats from this album are represented by all the typists in the background of the Fortnight video when she is sitting at the typewriter. This was about Matty Healy. You’re welcome❤
Longing and pining to finally be together while trapped. We see and hear you TS loud and clear.
❤
yes!!!
Taylor sent me! Thanks for the fans here being so welcoming!
Love for Paul Buchanan. A voice that aches with emotion.
That’s a great story! So cool
I was there too. Paul said sorry nothing else to play so they replayed " I walk across the rooftops" as the encore. It still gives me goosebumps now, thinking of that perfect evening :)
This band really knows how to develop their own sound! Atmospheric and magical.
this song was out before TS was born just says how good it is stood the test of time
I bought this album when it first came out and then forgot all about it until Taylor reminded me. Thanks, Taylor!
