3.0 duratec was one of the greatest motors Ford ever put into their cars. It was on par with the other 3 liter v6 engines coming out of Japan at the time.
@@Jag-leaper Actually the Duratec V6 was a Ford design that had a lot of the early engineering work done by Porsch who was in the early stages of developing their own DOHC aluminum V6. Also with input from Cosworth. There may have been some similarities here and there with the Mazda KL V6 due to Ford's close relationship with Mazda but it's primarily a Ford design. But nevertheless it's a great engine and definitely one of the best and most reliable engines that Ford's ever built.
I have a 2002 Lincoln Continental, the Taurus based one they produced from 1995-2002. It has the V8, air-ride, and a few other things the Taurus didn't have. Funny thing is, even though they have 75 less HP, the Taurus with the Duratec still gets to 60 in almost the same time. Less HP and less torque than the V8, yet still one of the most impressive V6 sleeper cars to come out of that era. I have no idea how Ford did it but those things are quick. I'm guessing it's all the top-end power. I want to get a Sable LS Premium wagon with the Chrome wheels and the Duratec from 2004, that's a nice hauler too.

had a couple of these with the duratec. great handling and fantastic mid range speed all at a low price. vacuum leak issues cropped up when mileage hit around 100k. plastic intake manifold
Motor is solid. Other parts of the car not so much. My ex had two. Governed at 110mph but man racing home from.the club was fun at 18 years old with 6 people piled in that thing

My uncle had a "factory freak" 2004 Monte Carlo SS supercharged, we later found out the ECU had a coding error the rev limiter and shift points were 1,500rpm too high, had no mechanical issues because of it, ran like a top 😂

The solenoids you hear engaging around 4,000 RPM is Ford's IMRC (intake manifold runner control) solenoids engaging the opening of the secondary runners which are designed for maximum high rpm breathing. Those solenoids engage at around 4,000 RPM. It's very similar to Mazda's VRIS system in their KL V6.

The speedometer has to be wrong. If 3000rpm is at 21mph, 6000 can't be at 52. It's roughly an 8 second 0-60 car stock, my parents had one. The Vulcan is in the 9-9.5s range I believe

The solenoids you're hearing around 4k rpm is the variable intake manifold. Ford's system is called IMRC (intake manifold runner control) and it has solenoids that engage secondary intake runners that open around 4k rpm for maximum high rpm breathing and power.
The speedometer is definitely wrong. As a former owner of this car I can tell you it does about 43ish in first gear, not nearly 60. Plus the instant jump from 40 to 60 is absolutely not the real acceleration. A brand new Duratec would do 0-60 in like 8 seconds.

My parents had a 2000 Taurus with this 3.0L Duratec (Duratec was the DOHC 24V and the shitty Vulcan was the OHV 12V) and that thing was so crazy for it’s time and the cost. 200 HP and 205 Ft.-Lbs. in a 3,300 lb. car. I wasn’t surprised when Ford brought it back for the new Explorers and put twin turbos, VVCT, and GDI in it to make 420 HP. My only complaint is even though it was a great engine (with the exception of the earlier ones, cause the whatever you call its on the cams would loosen, and if you didn’t tighten them, it would come off and destroy the engine) I don’t think any small engine can handle twin turbos like that without some SERIOUS changes. And knowing how downhill Ford has gone the past 7 or so years, you know they didn’t do it right.
The new 3.0 ecoboost is not at all based on the old 3.0 duratec. The new 3.0eco was built from the 2.7l nano ecoboost. None of the new generation ecoboosts are based off any of the old motors. And as far as handing the boost. My 3.5 ecoboost is making over 580hp now with zero internal work. They are awesome

This is because it was a Japanese engine it was a derivative of the KL engines that went into the Ford Probe and the Mazda MX-6

I had an 04 Mazda 6 with the 5 speed and the 3.0, literally the exact same experience. After 5k she lit the hell up, this is a great engine.
