Pertamina Tank Inspection (DRONE CASE STUDY INSIDE CRUDE OIL TANK)

Drone operations inside Pertamina oil storage tank: systematic Close Visual Inspection (CVI) of the entire tank, and LIDAR to capture a complete 3D scan of the tank to digitize the real asset. Featuring Emesent LIDAR, and Flyability Elios 2 confined space drone.
Pertamina is a Fortune 500 Global O&G company, with big challenges managing large scale assets throughout Indonesia related to (1) difficulty working from old schematics and blueprints; and (2) high risks and high costs with traditional methods to inspect the assets. In this case study, using drones (even inside complex high risk assets!), we quickly inspect a massive crude oil tank facility and provide an accurate 3D scan of the asset to help Pertamina make prudent maintenance decisions.

WORK METHOD:
The Digital Twin was collected in 30 minutes using Emesent Hovermap LIDAR unit (both hand-held and with drone).
This accurate 3D model was then used with software to extract As-Built schematics -- helping Pertamina to update tank drawings from 1972, and helping Halo to design flight plans for the Elios 2 inspection operations carried out after that.
Confined Space Inspections with the Elios 2 drone then took 5x days to complete, providing a systematic CVI inspection of: shell walls, girders, rafters, and roof. The Flyability Elios 2 is engineered specifically for these types of operations, and therefore able to obtain spectacular, consistent, repeatable inspection results.
No scaffolding was required, and all results were analyzed and certified as a formal inspection result by an API certified inspector.
Pertamina plans to use the Digital Twin and updated schematics, together with the CVI results, in order to make prudent decisions about the EPC requirements to fully overhaul this tank.
