Completely agree with you on this! That one thing has always bugged me with that book. My creativity & productivity goes up ten-fold when listening to music. I need noise cancelling headphones to block out the sounds around me, & fast paced upbeat music (I'm a bit of a metal head so pop metal is my go to) to distract my brain while I focus on what's in front of me. I think it's one of those things everyone should give a shot to find out what works best for them. Everyone's brains are wired different and we can't expect a blanket solution for everyone.
Hah, it really is lesson one. It must’ve been an important point to him. When I got to that part of the book I kind of disregarded it. My drawing instructor almost always had something playing while we would draw. I tend to turn my music on or off at different stages of animating. Like you said there’s times when you need all your concentration and when you need something to get the energy flowing. Everybody’s different when it comes to workflow. Thanks for making this video!
Yeah, the book makes it seem like it's kind of the most important thing. I actually listened to it at first when I was still a student, I wanted to do everything right but then I started just testing it out to see how true it was and I actually worked better on some things, so I hope other people also just try out what works for them rather than blindly following it!
Hey Robyn, I am so glad you covered this topic! I agree, listening to music while working isn't for everyone. I do believe with just a little bit of observation from the people that it doesn't work for they might find that it actually does work. I did my own little test after reading that part of THE ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT, while doing more technical stuff like certain parts of rigging, listening to music isn't for me. However while modeling, hard surface modeling or sculpting a character I noticed a huge uplift, in short the music kept me from over thinking my decisions and I am actually faster and more accurate. Aside form the performance enhancements I tend to get a lot of inspiration from music form a young age on to currently I have always had these little scenes play out in my head much like you would get from a book written by a good author. I also learned something new from this video. I had no idea I had misophonia. I have always gotten super annoyed by people eating with their mouth open. I remember at the age of 5 or 6 I got in trouble for popping my brother in the mouth for chewing with his mouth open during dinner one night. haha boy did i get a whooping for that... I had no idea there was a term for it. I still avoid certain people today because of it. There are actually so really good tutorials on youtube I simply can not watch because of the lip smacking noise.
Hey Justin, I'm totally with you on a lot of your points. I've also always gotten a lot of inspiration from music and love just listening to it and letting it form stories and images in my head. It has a huge effect on my mind and creativity/ inspiration as well as my mood. I also hate the sound of people chewing and lip smacking, I'll turn off a video if someone is making that sound. Can't bear it!
I agree that listening to music, a podcast or what not can help a lot. Depending on the task of course. Retopo for instance I may do a podcast. Lip-sync would be nothing or the music so low that it's more ambient noise than anything else. I personally love coffee houses and and that ambience. For me there are other things as well like cleaning up my work area and decluttering. It may sounds silly but a even something as simple as making the bed, clearing off your work space and making a relaxing area can help a great deal. If you love your work space then it'll be less of a distraction too.
I love decluttering my workspace, sometimes I wonder why I'm finding it so hard to concentrate and then I clean up my office a bit and realize all that clutter was the problem!
BRILLIANT! as always... you know, I didnt know misophonia existed until now, I think I might have a little, so thanks for pointing that out :) as always Robin thank you so much for your video I TOTALLY agree with you about the music listening, I find it like background sound especially when it captures my flow; thing is, sometimes is difficult to find the right music... jeje
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video. It is difficult to find the right music for the mood and productivity, I have specific playlists for different sorts of tasks for that exact reason!
Thank you for this! Like I've have people tell me all the time that music is bad for my work but I've found that I work so much better with some chilled tunes in the background while I do not need to do anything that needs me to listen to sound reference. It actually helps me focus on the task, the music becomes background noise and helps my mind not wander off someplace else. Just think it's all about the type of music you listen to.
i put on my headphones and listen to music while animating i love it that way . Maybe sometimes when am animating some complicated stuff then ill switch off music
I enjoy listening to ambient music or real nature sounds while working, because it helps keep me motivated to work and sitting still. Something with too good of a beat will make me want to get up and dance & lyrics can & will affect whatever mood I'm in. Thank you as always, Robyn!
ooh, that reminds me of one of my favorite artists who uses nature and bird sounds to make music, it's the best for something chilled and beautiful to listen to!
I never listen to music when driving as well. Helps the focus I guess. While animating and drawing I can listen to people talk but music doesn’t help, maybe my mind works differently. Thanks Robyn!
I usually fluctuate between Trance, Psytrance and Basshouse when I animate, or meditation music! However in my very first year animating I honoured not listening to music for a year and that did help me get good at animating, now music compliments that time spent without it.
For me it Depends. I know when i was in the office Having music playing in my earphones helped to drown out the chattering of people but when I am really stressed i prefer silence, Definitely getting myself noise canceling headphones for the office because I will lose my mind.
I like listening to music or playing a study in the background such as this one, when I'm practicing or don't have to think about my lines, like doing quick poses or warming up which is 60-80% of my drawings LOL. It has the opposite effect if I need to concentrate, it's very distracting and I end up not finishing my project.
Well if you think about it it’s kind of like Fortnite how the building really is another next level of generational multitasking with building and shooting at the same time, since I am still slow at the building part but on the other hand I do enjoy listening to music while I animate but I understand how having it off can make you fully focus on it as well but I believe I can somewhat of do both once in a while. Just always more learning curves and multitasking expanding overtime. But as always it depends on who you are too.
Although the book uses examples of 2d animation, the animation principles remain the same. There are a few sections that don't apply to 3d but the majority of them apply to all animation as a craft.
hahaha i've done lip sync while listening to podcasts. I can only give 100 percent to a shot when working in silence, but its more efficient long term when i'm doing the 10th thirty second lip sync sequence in a month.
Yes but you have actually tried not listening to anything while you animate? While I don't neccesarily always do it, I'll admit I get heaps more done when it's just me and the work. But I'm a dude so maybe I can literally focus on one thing at a time 🤣
Yes, I've tried both with and without music. If I'm doing something where I have to think really hard or figure stuff out, like rigging or figuring out why a script isnt working, then I won't listen to anything, but if it's more chilled like just animating, I work better with music.

Looove fast paced music when I'm in the zone ! It's such a vibe ! The whole music vs no music thing is very much a personal preference !

Music inspired me to start animating.so I'm not gonna stop listening to music
Yes, it's really important for creativity too , I find great inspiration in music

definitely agree, the music plays a huge part in whether it helps or hinders you!
I literally began reading this, and I was confused about this, thanks^^
That's quite a coincidence ! Glad I could help, it really is a great book apart from that !
i put on my headphones and listen to music while animating i love it that way . Maybe sometimes when am animating some complicated stuff then ill switch off music
I'm totally with you on that

This part of the book has haunted my thoughts, ever since I bought it.

it works with my adhd tho

I'm saving up for noise cancelling headphones! I wanna buy proper ones that block out maximum outside noise!
@@RobynO_O same here! best ones i found were bose. tried them out in the bose store in rosebank.
I've been looking at bose too but they're sooo expensive
Thank you so much :)
You're welcome !
What ever helps you do your work you should do that
💯
True. I always perform better when I listen to theme songs. What about podcasts?

Yeah, it seems a lot of people do a combination between the two, depending on what they're actually working on
I need to go find that book. ._.
It's a great book, all animators should read it
Music helps me a lot.. especially when I’m rigging (I listen to “Chill House Playlist “ on Apple Music

I can't be a rigger without music and a fat J. Let me be.
Gosh, I could never rig like that 😅 rigging takes all my most sober brain power
@@RobynO_O Lol. You're cool.
Is that book good for me even if I want to just stick to 3D animation?

that makes total sense!

@@RobynO_O how are you?? Twitter flowering you.

Many men can’t do more more than one thing at a time.

I don't listen to anything while working because I have less attention span and my low level brain can't decipher two things at a time.
I wouldn't say "low level brain", everybody's brain just works differently!
Guess it just depends what works for you.
💯
Meh who cares, listen to music if u want. Don’t have to live and die by this book
