That begonia “down home” is a beauty. And I’m still eyeing the black knight, it’s always such a statement. I’m sorry you lost your favourite species one, that was my fave you bought too.
😂 Praise indeed! Judging by viewer drop-off after 30 seconds in, I'm guessing not everyone is a fan of VLOG style videos - but they're fun to make and I know they do have their fans. I hope there's something in there for most folks who subscribe to the channel. And thank you for being one of those who keeps coming back! 🙏
Nice video again Geoff; good to see the streps there even if they're not doing anything. Wish there was a uk chapter of the gesneriad society, or even a houseplant society that covered orchids, gesneriads, impatiens and begonias...
Yeah sometimes it's just about making progress from what you had before regarding the Streps. The poor light and the bush snails gone will hopefully set them up for an early start come March time. And it looks like my entire channel is the UK chapter of those 4 genera!🤣
Hi Geoff. I enjoyed your greenhouse update, it's always nice to see what's flowering. Downsizing pots does make sense, but I for one don't often think about it unless the plant is doing poorly and needs repotting anyway. I'm always fascinated by your nepenthes and have placed an order for a N. ventricosa. I hope I can give it the conditions it needs to thrive because I paid more than I've ever paid for a houseplant. I also included a couple of pinguiculas in this order and am hoping they might enjoy the fruit flies that hang around our fruit bowl now that stone fruit is in season. There was a moment recently while shopping when I wasn't thinking logically and picked up another B. Iron Cross, the 3rd attempt at growing it. The minute it was in my possession it started dropping the outer leaves, although in its defence there are a few new buds popping up the middle. I need to still figure out its watering requirements and then I might be able to keep it alive.
Thanks Renate - hope you're doing well! Yeah I started to downsize when I could see they were struggling. We're so used to upsizing pots with hardy plants over here that it seems so counter intuitive to think about doing the opposite. Good luck with your carnivorous purchases! And I have a Begonia soli-mutata which is very similar to iron-cross. I thought it was the lower temperatures that started leaf drop on mine but once I began watering only occasionally it doesn't seem to have issues any more. I suppose it's the old rhizome thing again - they already have enough moisture stored in there and don't need much, especially once the temperatures drop. Try reducing your watering and see what happens.
@Grow_Up_Man55 Iron Cross hadn't been watered since I bought it which was almost 3 weeks ago and it took a good amount of water before it started draining out the bottom. Now I'll leave it for about 3-4 weeks again before offering any more water. Thanks for the tip, we'll see how it goes.
Hi Geoff😌🙌Wonderful video🥰I like how you grow many species of plants. I was reminded of my childhood seeing the impatiens niamniamensis😁I remember them in the garden back in New Zealand. Oh, yes, growing in smaller pots does create warmth for the roots as opposed to huge pots that cause root exposure. My mother-in-law just cut back her cane begonias, so I nicked them and I'm trying to root them in water😅🙏Hopefully they get roots.
Thanks Newman! 😀 It's funny - you'd think NZ has a similar climate to the UK but there's no way my Impatiens niamniamensis would survive outside here 🤷♂️. And good luck with your cane Begonias - they root fairly easily so you shouldn't have too many issues.
Great update! I have not been keeping up on the RUclips lately so I'm going to check what else I've missed (e.g. the beard - looks great!). Love love LOVE the species begonias. Would a clear lid help keep the warmth in? Or would that make it too warm/moist/shady?
Cheers Nick! The beard didn't last I'm afraid...🤣🫣 I might have another go over winter. Regarding the species Begonias I tend to take the line that more light is preferable to more heat, so I don't cover them unless they look like they're struggling. I've nothing really to base this on other than an intuitive feeling. If they look like they're struggling then I might panic and cover them...although it's usually too late by then 🤣.
Ooh you have one of those new flower shape hybrid Cyclamen 30:33 I was excited about when I got a pink one! I tried but could not send you a pic on Instagram…the flat flowers with the collar are so different from the original Cyclamen. I have not seen the down facing petticoat one 31:15 yet here, I’ll keep an eye out for it. Nice video, much good info, thanks! Oh my Nepenthes sanguinea got a chilly draft and the pitchers turned brown 😡 but it ok now 😊🌱

I've struggled in the past with angel wing types - as they seem to be more sensitive to the cold. Although maybe this hybrid isn't - time will tell.
I do like these videos, its like watching gardeners world but with plants that actually interest me.
