  • Hello Everyone,
Today's video is showing how to shake out a colony of bees.
There are a few reasons for doing this, and it's always a last resort. Generally, you only shake out a colony when there's an issue with the young, non-flying bees. In this case, I had laying workers, which are predominantly younger bees gaslighted into thinking they are queens by the older bees.
Laying workers come about when there hasn't been a queen in a colony for quite a while, yet there are still lots of emerging bees. I'm not sure this is a problem in wild colonies and only comes about when you have idiots like me putting lots of fresh brood in queenless colonies.
When shaking the colony out, I find it best to shake the bees in front of a weaker hive. That way, the younger bees will work their way into the hive and bolster the numbers. The flying bees will fly back to the original hive position, so you have to make sure to remove all traces of the hive or you'll end up with a bunch of old angry queenless bees to deal with. Eventually, the flying bees will bribe their way into another colony and give them a boost in numbers, too.
I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, then please like and subscribe to see more!
I hope you're safe and well,
    Greg

You are really going through about every issue a beekeeper can experience this season, great to share so others can potentially identify the same problems and the options they have

Trying my best. It's very easy as a newbie to panic. I just want to create a resource on how to manage certain situations.
