A very young John Landis worked on this movie too, and was inspired to write An American Werewolf... while he was there. Great review of a great movie.
I'm a fan of most of the actors in this film, particularly Don Rickles and Telly Savalas and do they ever make the most of their characters here. This film is an absolute blast. RIP Donald Sutherland, who passed away today.
A great war, anti war, action, thriller, comedy. A heist film with a fantastic cast. One of my favorites. Adieu Donald Sutherland. I would love to see the uncut version.
Fun fact for you guys. Did you know that John Landis was a PA/stunt double on this movie and during his time on production came up with the idea and wrote the script for An American Werewolf In London. After he had witnessed a gypsy burial ritual. Who knew that 10 years, that film would become a horror cult classic.
Very first time I learned of Donald Sutherland was seeing this is a boy. Fascinated by this very different war movie from my Pov. Funny and very enjoyable by this kid and still today at 51! Great pick out of Mr Sutherland’s vast amount of work. HD Stanton from Alien!
This film was a masterpiece, I remember watching it as a kid with my father and brothers and it became a tradition to see it each year, we can quote any line and all Oddball's scenes are absolutely iconic. Woof Woof Woof Oddball, rest in peace, may Moriarty not hit you with those negative waves early in the morning.
What timing. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie, and part of the reason is characters like Oddball. RIP Donald Sutherland. I'll try to keep up the positive waves for ya.💕
Good analysis but the moment when Telly Savana’s and the German get the same view of the guys in the minefield is deliberate. It is not a reuse of a shot on the cheap. It is the fact that playing dead and being dead look the same. I was 7 years old when this came out and I have seen it at 12 and 20 and 24 and 35 and 42 and 48 and 52 and 60. This has been brilliant every time.
DP was the great Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa. Studied under the legendary Gregg Toland and created the noir, chiaroscuro look for the golden age of Mexican cinema and shot John Ford's "The Fugitive". Good on you to give him kudos on his camera work for "Kelly's Heroes".
It's an interesting snapshot of the times, the Bridge at Remagen another example. Of course this is where John Landis got the idea for An American Werewolf in London.
I was a medic in Iraq. I was in the 3ID, in combat and got the CMB. There is no war movie other than Kelly's Heroes that captures how men in combat sense loss and react to war.
There are many interesting aspects in this film, at that time WW2 was relatively still relevant and more wars were going on, it is good the approach they took for this mixing many genres but in a light-hearted kind of adventure style, is indeed well made with a great cast and deserve more recognition as a great film of the '70s
One of the best WWII movies ever made. A true classic. Also, on this film, a little known PA named John Landis came up with the idea for a horror movie that eventually became "An American Werewolf In London".
Moriarty: "It's a piece of junk!" As with a lot of the rest of this movie, there's some accuracy to what he's complaining about, because despite its reputation, the Tiger was actually quite unreliable, with them being more likely to breakdown rather than be destroyed by the enemy, due to them being rushed into service with underpowered engines and transmissions.
Fun Fact. When Oddball's tanks come out of the railroad tunnel , blowing everything up, the song playing on the loudspeakers is "I've been working on the railroad" Fun Fact 2 I loved this movie so much, I became a Gunner on a tank in USCMR. The M60's ! RiP Donald "Oddball" Sutherland. The world is a little grayer without ya.
My mom was a kid when this movie was made. So when she saw a lot of military surplus going through her village she thought there was some sort of invasion. She ran home yelling scared until her dad told her that they're filming a war movie in Istra.😅
A Film of some great set pieces, quotable dialog, strung together nicely. However, its 'feel' is not WW2, there is a strong late 60's counter culture attitude in it.
One of my top 3 films along with The Great Escape and the Italian Job. Incredible to think the same man wrote both The Italian Job and Kelly's Heroes in a couple of years.
Great breakdown guys I can tell you have mad respect for this film. One of the best and you’re right there’s nothing else much like it. These little factoids weren’t mentioned so I’m not sure if you know about it or not. Moriarity, Oddball’s, sidekick and mechanic, was played by Gavin McLeod. He was big in American television. Having major roles in both the ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ show and ‘The Love Boat’. “Colonel” Colt was actually two star General Colt. He was played by Carol O’Connor. This is the role that earned Carol O’Connor his iconic TV role as Archie Bunker in the 70s TV show ‘All In the Family’. And of course, Telly Savalas went on to his police detective TV show ‘Kojak’. Even Don Rickles had a TV show at one time.
First off RIP Donald Sutherland. This is a great film, and I am always impressed with how many people all over the world know this film. Really well-made Film.
RIP, Donald "Oddball" Sutherland ( 1935-2024 ). At least now he's catching some rays, eating cheese, and drinking wine. And no more knocking him with some negative waves.
Loved this as a kid and every while through life. 33 now. My dad was very against it because the tanks weren’t real tiger tanks 🙄 amongst other complaints. You’re right that if you take this is a comedy or fun romp it can be really entertaining and has great moments.
RIP Donald. Speaking of how antiwar this is, oddball is the personnification of that considering the time the film was made and his look All the Vietnam set back This is I find very underrated in Clints catalogue and all war movies.
Saw this loads as a child due to the 80s phenomenon of your film catalogue being mainly what you recorded from the telly at Xmas. Will have to have another look. Also I weird to think the war was only 25 years ago at the time this came out.
RIP Donald Sutherland - what a legend, too many incredible movies to mention but personal favourites include this, Don't Look Now and of course, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
Nice one guys. Cheers. A wonderfully silly War Film, that isn't a War Film. It's a Caper film. It's a Heist Film. It's a Comedy Film. It's a gung-ho! Action Film It's an anti-Vietnam War Film. It's like, very 60s Hippy vibes, man. And those bizarre looking, so-called Panzer VI Tiger Tanks. Well, at least they tried. And I bloody love this film.
This is my favorite Heist movie and one of my favorite "war" movies! Donald Sutherland stole the movie, but that wasn't uncommon! Burning Bridges is such a fantastic song!
That trivia about Donald Sutherland almost dying during filming really aged badly. The markings on the "Tiger" are from the 1st SS Panzer Division "Adolf Hitler", who were supposed to be fanatical even by SS standards, so it's highly unlikely that the commander would've agreed to help, at least not in a real situation. It's not impossible, because the Nazis were notorious for looting, but I doubt they'd agree to rob a bank, especially along with Allied troops. Interesting to note that it wasn't uncommon for each side to use each other's weapons and vehicles, even their tanks. But they'd soon paint their own insignias on the bodywork to avoid being shot at by their own side. I've even seen things like Shermans with iron crosses painted on them in old WWII pics!
Thanks for doing this. Nice, deep dive review. Coincidentally, I just watched this movie, one of my favorites throughout my entire 67 year life, but hadn’t watched in at least 20 years. I have it in a two-fer Blu-ray set which also includes another Brian Hutton/Clint Eastwood movie, WHERE EAGLES DARE. Loved it as much, if not more than I ever have. And then two days later Donald “Oddball” Sutherland dies. Sutherland’s Oddball steals every scene he’s in and practically steals the whole movie. And that’s saying something considering the rest of the cast of scene-stealers: Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carrol O’Conner, Stuart Margolin, Harry Dean Stanton, Len Lesser, Jeff Morris and Gavin MacLeod. I probably have seen this movie a few dozen times or more one my life. But this last viewing was very meaningful to me, and I was so appreciating Sutherland’s performance, and then two days later, he dies. After I watched the movie, I wanted to re-watch The Critical Drinker’s review of it, and watched a few other reviews. And I think that’s why your review came up as a recommended video. So many positive waves, man! Rest in Shalom, Oddball (among his many other great roles)! May your positive waves in your work always bless us.
Ever see someone out-chatisma someone else? Telly Savalas out-does Eastwood in any catrgory you can name. Brains, Acting Ability, Muscles, and Vocal Performance.
Damn this was nostalgic, this one and 2010 Space Odyssey, are the two movies that i remember always watching on my local variation of TLC back in the time. But i wonder how it would feel with this original long cut or maybe it was the longer one i saw.
Their ordinary guys. Criminals, weirdos, gangsters, odd balls lol. Like you see in the pub every day... The lads who fought the war. thats why this film is so bloody good :)
Awesome movie, so much fun and of course the late great Donald Sutherland as Oddball was just pure madness. Three Kings, with George Clooney is a loose adaptation set during the Gulf War
Rest in peace Donald Sutherland, a true Oddball.
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland 😔
RIP Donald Sutherland. You sent out some real positive waves, man.
"Crazy ! I mean like so many positive waves maybe we can't lose ! You're on !" - Oddball
RIP Sgt. Oddball
I watched your review this morning and now I just heard about Donald Sutherlands passing. Great actor. RIP
The now-departed Donald Sutherland’s character, “Oddball”, was maybe the only hippie to have served in World War II.🇺🇸
he was a beatnik
RIP Donald Sutherland, sad news today. Loved him in this film and the Dirty Dozen.
A very young John Landis worked on this movie too, and was inspired to write An American Werewolf... while he was there. Great review of a great movie.
I'm told that all the lead in the WW2 surplus clothes and equipment then made it's way into his son's system, very tragic but it explains much
He's the tall nun that Oddballs Sherman drives past after they all climb on top of it. 👍
The perfect film. Action, humor, heists, and Clint Eastwood. Thanks for covering my favorite movie guys, fantastic job as usual.
I'm a fan of most of the actors in this film, particularly Don Rickles and Telly Savalas and do they ever make the most of their characters here. This film is an absolute blast.
RIP Donald Sutherland, who passed away today.
R.I.P. Donald Sutherland
Poignant watching this, as just heard Donald Suttherland passed today. Great film. Great actors. Great review.
Wow eerie timing RIP Donald

Forget that dumb werewolf movie
He made the Blues Brothers
Classic film with a great blend of comedy and action. They don't make 'em like this no more.
Never clicked on a OTSR video so fast. Great stuff as always, gents!
Very first time I learned of Donald Sutherland was seeing this is a boy. Fascinated by this very different war movie from my Pov. Funny and very enjoyable by this kid and still today at 51! Great pick out of Mr Sutherland’s vast amount of work. HD Stanton from Alien!

"Woof woof woof! That's my other dog impression."
Gary and Iain in the morning! Always worth some extra whiskey in the cornflakes. Happy Midsommar, guys!
I was a medic in Iraq. I was in the 3ID, in combat and got the CMB. There is no war movie other than Kelly's Heroes that captures how men in combat sense loss and react to war.
RIP Donald Sutherland . Every film you touched turned to gold IMO 😢
Appreciate the hard work boys 👊👊
Telly Savalis just about steals this one. Would loved to have seen a movie just about Big Joe.
rip Donald Sutherland a true legend. the eagle has landed is my favourite donald sutherland movie i like

Still a more historically accurate movie than Battle of the Bulge (1965)
Moriarty: "It's a piece of junk!"
As with a lot of the rest of this movie, there's some accuracy to what he's complaining about, because despite its reputation, the Tiger was actually quite unreliable, with them being more likely to breakdown rather than be destroyed by the enemy, due to them being rushed into service with underpowered engines and transmissions.
This movie was a big part of me childhood me and me bro used to watch it hundreds of times
R.l.P Donald Sutherland
R.I.P. Oddball... aka Donald Sutherland.
"Woof, woof. That was my dog impression..."
Fun Fact. When Oddball's tanks come out of the railroad tunnel , blowing everything up, the song playing on the loudspeakers is "I've been working on the railroad"

25:11 "Colonel Colt"!? Nope, That's a Major GENERAL! (I got a "Gen. Patton" feel with Carroll O'Connor's character.)
My mom was a kid when this movie was made. So when she saw a lot of military surplus going through her village she thought there was some sort of invasion.
She ran home yelling scared until her dad told her that they're filming a war movie in Istra.😅
Another similar film was "Impasse", starring Burt Reynolds. In that film, it's after the war, but still a quest for missing WW2 gold.

I was a few minutes into this video when I heard Donald Sutherland had died!
It's sadly ironic this review was posted before Donald Sutherland's passing. What an actor of great stature.
Troy Kennedy Martin was a legendary TV screenwriter and penned the classic Eco-thriller, Edge of Darkness with Bob Peck🤓 amongst other bangers!
RIP President Snow aka Donald Sutherland
I do hope this movie starts making reactors lists, because it is so special to me.
My favourite performance from Donald Sutherland. R.I.P.
R.i.p Mr. Sutherland

RIP Donald.

All the Vietnam set back
This is I find very underrated in Clints catalogue and all war movies.
Loved this movie, Donald Sutherland was great!
All respect for Donald Sutherland! Rest easy!
The REAL star of the movie was.... Donald Sunderland. God bless you 'Oddball'. ❤
Saw this loads as a child due to the 80s phenomenon of your film catalogue being mainly what you recorded from the telly at Xmas. Will have to have another look. Also I weird to think the war was only 25 years ago at the time this came out.

Great job guys.
RIP Donald Sutherland - what a legend, too many incredible movies to mention but personal favourites include this, Don't Look Now and of course, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
33:23 actually, in Italy it's called "i guerrieri" ("the warriors") 🙂
Excellent review gentlemen, thanks as always ❤

$16 million in cash from 1942 is worth $308,320,000 today, however 14000 1kg gold bars are worth $826,574,000
I was 7 when it was re
leased and I've watched it a dozen times since through the years. 😎

11:24 When I was in Iraq, I didn't get a haircut for six months. I have photo of me with quite long hair siting in my M113.

But i wonder how it would feel with this original long cut or maybe it was the longer one i saw.
1) Sutherland completely steals the film 2) Eastwood’s worst performance 3) overall a Great movie 🎉❤
Good movie. I watched it with my late father back in 1970.
8:52 That is what war is for the men who have to fight. You always feel dirty, on edge and you want it to end, and it doesn't.
The guy on the right should have watched the movie a few more times in order to get his facts straight….
one of the best heist movies in history
3:39 Combat is always like that.
Excellent film, Great review.
Their ordinary guys. Criminals, weirdos, gangsters, odd balls lol. Like you see in the pub every day... The lads who fought the war. thats why this film is so bloody good :)
Always with the negative waves, Moriarty! RIP Donald…
A hero is some kind of weird sandwich 😅
Awesome movie, so much fun and of course the late great Donald Sutherland as Oddball was just pure madness. Three Kings, with George Clooney is a loose adaptation set during the Gulf War
Three Kings from David O. Russell is another awesome war/heist movie👍
I love this film so much.
The shoulder patches are accurate.
My favorite war/caper movie.
RIP Oddball. 😢😢😢😢😢
Brilliant comedy, not sure it was supposed to be.My favourite film.
6:21 I served under bad officers.
I love these guys ❤
