    Reggie, I’ve been trying to find the words to tell you how grateful I am. When this video was taken never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen. We are so thankful to you and to hear this conversation (I couldn’t hear from where I was and I try to give Ryan space to speak for himself) just happen organically and you listened… like really listened… with your body language and how you would light up when he spoke of his music. I’m not sure what it was but in this moment I felt so many emotions… love, pride, thankfulness… all of it. I am so grateful you two had this time together. He will forever remember you… and something tells me you’ll remember him as well. All our love to you, Reggie. 🙏

    The sudden switch from the somewhat awkward cadence of his speech to perfect cadence and control as he started to perform was incredible to witness, you can see how much more natural music feels to him than speech, kinda makes sense he picked that up first. I look forward to inevitably seeing him make his mark on the music world

    • @TheBanjoShowOfficial
      @TheBanjoShowOfficial Год назад +25

      That awkward cadence of him talking is very likely just a byproduct of him being delayed in speech development until the age of 10. Missing those developmental milestones are a huge, and I mean a HUGE impediment on a child’s overall psychological development. For what it is worth, this guy seems to have managed to come out like a rather very normal guy. Many people are permanently disabled in some aspect of their lives if they miss those milestones. It’s extremely sad. I work with nonverbal children often times in behavioral therapy. The lights are on, but… they’re missing that crucial component of speech which allows a person to connect with others.

      Singing has never been something I was good at, but I can tell you that the first time I ever played drums in front of people was one of the most exhilarating experience of my youth. I had only been vocal for a few years and was still very uncomfortable in front of people, but behind that drum kit I felt safe because I could express myself through something else. I became non-verbal when I was ten got out of it just before my 15th birthday its just a combination of problems I can't control nor blame anyone for except myself. It just feels so peaceful and so right to isolate myself back then. Maybe it was the worst case of depression but I hate to think about what kids with autism felt like not being able to communicate.

It’s just part of how someone’s brain works. I’m autistic and proud. Only thing I’d change is how people treat me for it and the prejudice I face. However if your son ends up speaking, good for him.

      @@templadoom its not sad. so many autistic people have disagreed with the "it's a superpower" mindset for a long time. Savant syndrome is really rare. Sometimes it diminishes struggles because people are so focused on focusing on the positives. What about austistic people who don't have any sort of special talent????? Cause there are plenty. How do you think they feel with this narrative that they all have "super powers" but they don't???? Idk if I explained this properly but a lot of us have a problem with it. Just don't generalise.

    When he starts singing the mask drops and the confidence is there and he's truly himself. I hope to get to that point some day.

    Thank you for this. I didn't speak except to my mom and brother until I was about 9 (they just said I was "shy", nobody diagnosed ASD back then), but started playing drums at 13 and that was my real gateway to navigating this world. I have a 5 year old son now that was diagnosed a couple years ago, thankfully there is now better understanding and tools to help with the condition, but we still always make sure music and musical instruments are around, I think it's important. How much music can help a person with autism (and possibly other conditions) cannot be overstated, but everyone should try music anyway, it's the closest thing to magic that exists.

    This is what music is all about! It's not about how fast you can play or how many complicated chords you can strum, it's about communicating in another language, telling a story and being able to express what world cannot.
    I wish Ryan the best for his musical career!
