I was not expecting this film to have so many wacky moments that genuinely made me puzzled. I had a ball with these movies and it was incredible to see Jack get a satisfying conclusion to his character arc. Enjoy :)

I can't remember where I first saw it but someone said that Will learned pirating from Jack Sparrow, but Elizabeth learned pirating from Barbossa and you can really see it in this movie. Will is doing what Jack does by making deals and double crossing and (probably) hoping it'll work out in the end, while Elizabeth is following the rules and procedures of pirating and is using the authority and commanding the crews

One of my favourite things here is the change about in Pintel's attitude with Elizabeth. In 1&2, his greeting of " 'ello poppet" is rather sinister and menacing, as opposed his affectionate almost avuncular "goodbye poppet", as Elizabeth leaves the ship in 3.

I just think Davy Jones is such an emotional character, he's agreed to eternity to be with Calypso and after who knows how many years he's still in so much pain over her loss although he denies it. I think his story is the saddest part of the whole franchise and I also think that because of that he's one of the best villains that ever appeared in cinema. I love these films so much, this one in particular.

Jacks dad said “it’s not just about living forever, it’s about living with yourself forever”
The moment after Will gets stabbed, the reason Jack doesn’t kill jones then is because he knows he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he could have saved Will.

In the end scene where he's using the compass, until he's holding the Rum the compass won't point to the Fountain Of Youth or anything else, it'll only point to the Rum, cause that's what he'll always want most. When he's holding the Rum the compass is free to point at what he wants next.

"What? You've seen it all, done it all. Survived. That's the trick isn't it? To survive?"
"It's not just about living forever, Jackie. The trick is still living with yourself forever."
Fun Fact: The movie was shot back-to-back with Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006).
I Love Science Fact: The green flash is a real, but very rare, optical phenomenon during sunrise or sunset, that is best observed at sea. It is caused by the refraction of light in the atmosphere, amplified by a mirage.
Historical Fact: A real-life council of pirates existed at one time. The Brethren of the Coast was a loose coalition of pirates and buccaneers, active in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. They had a base on the island of Tortuga, off the coast of Haiti, and in Port Royal, Jamaica. The Brethren were originally French Huguenots and British Protestants, but their ranks were joined by other adventurers of various nationalities, including Spaniards and Africans.
Captain Teague Fact: Keith Richards is playing Captain Teague, Jack Sparrow's father and the keeper of the pirate code. Richards is Johnny Depp's friend and main inspiration for his Jack Sparrow character, and he was slated to appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), but scheduling conflicts with the world tour of his band The Rolling Stones prevented this. The day Richards came in to film his scenes, he got so drunk on set that Gore Verbinski had to prop him up. Richards remarked: "If you wanted straight, then you got the wrong man."

The Wicked Wench was a slave-transporting ship under the control of Cutler Beckett. Jack was the captain of the ship, in charge of transporting the slaves from Africa to the Caribbean; however, Jack liberated the ship and freed the slaves, to which Beckett destroyed and sunk the Wench via the use of fire. The flames charred the wood of the ship, turning it to a sooty black colour (the black pearl). After the ship sank, Jack wanted his beloved ship back, and made a deal with Davy Jones to raise the wench from the depths. Jones did indeed raise the ship, but at a cost. As there were 100 slaves aboard the ship, that meant that 100 lives were prevented from going to Davy Jones’ Locker as they had been saved from death. So, Jones made the deal with Jack that he’d have to serve 100 years aboard the Dutchman in place of those 100 slaves saved.

I love that the crew of the Dutchman looked the way they did because Jones refused to do his job and ferry the souls lost at sea. As soon as Will took charge, they regained their humanity. Norrington is played by Jack Davenport. Before these movies I had only seen him in the BBC comedy "Coupling" that ran from 2000-2004. It was very cool seeing him play such a different character.

Beckett said him & Jack have a history & they left their marks on each other. This was explained in a deleted scene; Jack was supposed to transfer a cargo for Lord Beckett. He found out the cargo is 100 slaves, so he freed them & told Beckett "people are not cargo, mate". This led to Beckett labeling Jack as a pirate. It appears that he took the 100 slaves to Tortoga

One of my favourite parts is how Ragetti recognizes that they're not saying the line right, and he's easily able to get into the right mindset to say it correctly. That feels like such a special moment, and hints at an intelligence that most people lack and that Ragetti rarely gets to show off.

Yes please do the last two films! They might not be the best, but they are worth the good laughs. The tragic love story between Calypso and Davy Jones has always been my favorite lore in POTC. When Calypso says “It’s my nature.”, She is saying that she was wild and unpredictable as the sea. It’s possible on the one day after 10 years, she could’ve been with Davy Jones in her sea form instead of the human form that he wanted. “Malfaiteur en Tombeau, Crochir l’Esplanade, Dans l’Fond d’l’eau!”, the phrase Calypso yells out when she is freed from her bonds, roughly translates to “Across all the seas, find the path to he who wrongfully entombed me!". Also in the original Greek myth, Calypso is a sea nymph who is the daughter of the Titan Atlas. When the Titans lost the war against the Greek gods, she was punished for siding with her dad. Because she supported him in the war so the gods punished/cursed her that she would have to stay in Ogygia forever. Also Calypso’s real symbol was a dolphin not a crab. They did that because the crab is an octopus’ prey.

There was some forshadowing of Tia Dalma being Calypso in Dead Man's Chest. When the crew is at her hut there is a necklace on the table when Jack is stealing a ring. The picture on the necklace is the same image on the music box on Davy Jones's pipe organ. Furthermore, when Tia tells the tale of how Davy Jones fell in love with a woman, Gibbs says that he heard a different version of the tale in which Jones fell in love with the sea. She then says that they are two versions of the same story and both are true.
Keith Richards was actually set to appear in Dead Man's Chest but had to pull out due to his commitment with the band's tour.
Fun fact: The sword Davy Jones stabs Will with is the sword Will made for James Norrington in Curse of the Black Pearl.
Speaking of, James is such an underrated character. He was complex but a good man and he genuinely loved Elizabeth.
I recommend watching 4 and 5 to find out for yourself if you like them or not. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are unfortunately not in them but I personally enjoy both. One of the main characters in 5 is Will and Elizabeth's son.

The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the show to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis.
    *The Chorus:*
    _Yo ho, haul together_
    _Hoist the colors high_
    _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_
    _Never shall we die_
The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning.
    *First verse:*
    _The King and his men_
_stole the Queen from her bed_
_and bound her in her bones_
The King was the Pirate King at that time. The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form.
_the seas be ours and by the powers_
    _where we will we'll roam_
The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso.
    *Second verse:*
    _Now some have died_
    _and some are alive_
    _and others sail on sea_
This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning.
_with the keys to the cage_
    _and the Devil to pay_
The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades.
    _we lay to Fiddler's Green._
Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative.
    *Third verse:*
    _The bell has been raised_
    _From it's watery grave..._
_Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_
    _A call to all_
    _Pay head the squall_
_And turn your sails to home!_
This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.

1:36 - A thing to remember is Beckett as a "CEO" of a corporation (East India Trading Company) he's counting the profits lost to piracy.
But as the saying goes, if you want to see the character of a person, give him or her power... especially unlimited power.
3:15 - To be fair, as a female she's at a big physical disadvantage. She basically fights by being smarter not harder.
8:45 - Some people don't really like to remember or even face their sorrows especially the painful ones.
Jones just took the forget part to the extreme...
9:11 - As useful as the thing is, Beckett doesn't want it turned on the EITC in case things go wrong. Beckett if anything is smart seeing the long-term effects.
26:20 - Just like any regular lovers' spat then, eh Jones?
30:57 - I have always wondered if Beckett wanted some of the more malleable pirates as his privateers or private army. Give them pardons and boom! He has a huge force multiplier and reduce piracy.
34:48 - Adds more awesomeness to an already awesome battle.
39:35 - You'll have to admit that he had a recovered a bit of dignity accepting his defeat by not ranting or stuff like other villains.
40:20 - Do remember what Jones and now Will are supposed to do: being guides to the dead ie Psychopomps.
Everyone abroad the Flying Dutchman are either dying (which Jones can postpone) or dead (which Will must ferry to the afterlife.
Elizabeth must be either to stay abroad the ship. Sometimes there's no freebies to immortality... though I think their state is being undead.
May I recommend Sleepy Hollow starring Johnny Depp for this Halloween?

You can see it from the perspective of Elizabeth. She is grown up in a "stiff" world a bad boy such as Jack can become really attractive, it does not always end well, that kind of a story but hay that's how emotions work. Will on the other hand has really shown her loyalty and admiration and love. I mean Elizabeth is no fool she realizes that is love.

  • @DragonHeart53

My understanding about the compass, is that while Jack explicitly says that it points toward what you want the most, I think it's a little more complex than that, Because the compass will also point at what will get you what you want the most as well.
This was partly why Jack had so much trouble getting a specific heading directed from the compass because not only was he conflicted in what he wanted the most, there were many different avenues for how to get what he wanted. So the compass would swing wildly around to different directions because it couldn't settle on any one thing.
It's also why the compass wildly shifted between pointing at William and Jack when Elisabeth held it, because in some moments, it was possible to just go directly to William, But others, it would have been necessary to have Jack to get to William, and then others, it would point at Davey's heart, because all three were possible for her to get William, but not all at the same time.
The compass, in that way, almost feels like a really good use of visual story telling, because it would directly point at who or what is directly necessary for the plot to move forward in that moment.

Second: Something I’m NEVER a fan of is people constantly jumping on the “don’t watch the 4th or 5th movies cause they’re not good” - like let people decide that for themselves! And don’t give someone preconceived notions or expectations, cause you don’t know that a person isn’t going to like those ones. They’re all part of the same franchise and I personally did enjoy them. Regarding the young boy that was executed in the very beginning: historically speaking, kids as young as primary school age would serve on ships as cabin boys, deckhands, stuff like those, not just on pirate ships (in fact probably less likely on pirate ships) but on official navy ships, man-o-war ships etc. :) since officer ranks were mostly bought rather than "earned" via a long career, you'd have officers as young as 14, 15 years of age (usually ensigns, but still) who'd participate in battles both on sea and also in armies everywhere else. while ofc their mental/physical development was the same as in kids today, the concept of "childhood" didn't really exist until a couple decades ago in the western world (that is, maybe 100 years) in that context.

The Royal Navy was still doing this in WWI. Hence while boys were not meant to serve in the Army, and were sent home if they were found to be underage, the youngest British deaths in official service were midshipmen in the Navy, some as young as eight.

39:24 This scene is real, it wasn't made using CGI or computing, they measured every shred that would pass through the actor and that's how it was done.

Wonderful reaction! I'm glad you enjoyed this movie! I have only watched the first three movies; I haven't watched the other ones though in Dead Man tell no tales Will Turner and Elizabeth appear in that one from what I remember reading about it. I'm not sure to what capacity if they are major roles or smaller roles. I agree, Davy Jones is a compelling villain. Once again, a wonderful reaction from you and fun to see again after so many years! If you do watch the other remaining movies, do remember to look for extra scenes after the credits! ☮💕

Whoever said the others doesn't matter lied. The others especially that last one made matters. It gives a conclusion to Will and Elizabeth's love story. So, I look forward to hopefully seeing you react to the others in the series as well!

IDC what anyone says, Jack is a good person. as much of a chaotic neutral as he is, in the end he does care about his friends. I mean he gave up IMMORTALITY to save Will. Was WIll's death kind of his fault? yeaa but still he made it right.

The trilogy is amazing. It's not often that sequels are just as good, or even better than the movies that came before, but these three movies are definitely on par with each other.
I just wish it'd stayed with a trilogy, but when Hollywood sees money they lose sight of everything else. I gave up on Pirates after the trilogy. Saw the 4th movie, don't remember much of it, didn't like it much. Decided the 5th wasn't worth it.
    Either way, fun reactions!

I freaking love this movie. It has so much atmosphere, the vibe, the aesthetic, the character development. My only gripe is the ending. Elizabeth, after breaking free from the constraints of society's expectations and becoming the literal pirate king is.... just reduced to being a mother. Will never wanted to be a pirate, but Elizabeth did. I think the ending is a bit of a disservice to her character and her journey.
