Why the Lightning Cup is the BEST Retro Cup in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Level By Level

- Mario kart 8 deluxe has a lot of great tracks, and with 48 more tracks coming in as DLC with the booster course pack there is a lot of competition for what is the best tracks. The DLC so far has been primarily focused on retro tracks so far, which has some pretty strong competition from the base mario kart 8. Something that may be even MORE difficult to decide is what is the best Retro CUP in mario kart 8 deluxe, and while this may change due to DLC, I personally think the lightning cup is the best overall in the game. It consists of the tracks Tick Tock Clock from mario kart ds, Piranha Plant Slide from mario kart 7, Grumble Volcano from Mario Kart Wii, and Rainbow Road from mario kart 64. These range from being pretty good to some of the best retro tracks in the entire series. So in today’s episode of level by level, we’re gonna be analyzing these four tracks based on their music, aesthetic, layout, shortcuts, and more! So let me explain to you all why the lightning cup is the BEST retro cup in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!

Retro tracks in base 8 Deluxe were really where Nintendo hit their stride with recreating the magic of old tracks seen before.
I agree.
Thumbs up
Cheese Land and Ribbon Road got SO much love
omg the gba tracks are some of the best now instead of just flat
We basically just got all nitro cups because the retro’s are so different
I like how N64 Rainbow Road is like the “ending” of the game, like grumble volcano is the traditional final lava level in a Mario game and N64 Rainbow Road is the end credits.
Little side note: The numbers for Tick Tock Clock’s background are still there…well, kind of. The clock face in the background replaces the 3, but the 6, 9, and 12 are still in the background on windows. It’s just that they’re Roman numerals now.
so III VI IX and XII
@@XanderPlays123 Yup
The fact that this cup has 4 tracks which are one of the best tracks from their respective game of origin is absolutely amazing
With the exception of Rainbow Road, yes
And yet it gave all four a massive glow-up regardless
I want a 2 hour long video of you just taking about every track in MK8 Deluxe
14:06 I have been playing this game for 5 years and I just now hear about this. I guess you do learn something new everyday.
My favourite is the Leaf cup personally. Just all phenomenal remakes of tracks I really enjoy. Sherbet Land glowup is underrated af
Making it a night setting was genius tbh
I agree. The leaf cup is my favourite mk8 cup
It is my 2nd favorite track in the game😁
*Cup
Yeah, and Melody Motorway (the European name) and Yoshi Valley were already fantastic tracks.
I’m just hoping the spiny cup will match this one, it’ll be tough but I think it will be great
if the spiny cup doesnt have the Wii Rainbow Road i will riot
Oh it will, with Wii Rainbow Road being in it. Best rainbow road right underneath 3DS Rainbow Road.
@@SaulTeeNutz I would say its the best one
@@osberswgaming I think rainbow road 3DS is objectively the best, but rainbow road Wii is probably my favorite
All I want for spiny cup is for it to be the 4 remaining rainbow roads
No way! I was today years to find out Grumble Volcano is themed around a Volcano 🤯
I feel that honestly, Tick Tock Clock is one of my top 3 favorite tracks ever. It is SO good, amazing to race on and beautiful.
I found it kinda funny that there is now more retro tracks then nitro tracks
Fr Lmao.
in base-8DX it’s actually the opposite…
I cool detail I noticed is that The minimap for rainbow road also made those final turns look like an 8
This is probably the most enjoyable and consistent cup. It has perfect balance, some of the best tracks in 8 and perfect difficulty balance. Like N64 Rainbow Road is my least favorite in here, but still an s tier. N64 rainbow road is the most deserving retro track to get remade. Grumble volcano was one of the perfect tracks to put before a rainbow road (its also criminally underrated).
This track also has my fav track in 8: tick tock clock.
So yeah, this cup is such a perfect retro cup.
Man I love these videos and your style of analysis/editing - keep it up!!
Really nice video. I also want to say that I really enjoy you going over the layout of each of the tracks you cover, nobody else does it and in usually provides really nice insight on the track I've never seen before.
Also cool Bowser is back, lets gooooo!
Great vid Odyssey! Lightning Cup is definitely underrated and I love to see it getting attention.
I’m gonna make some food and watch this one! Thank you for making my day slightly better
no cap one of my favorite youtube channels
You have finally did this so thank you 🙏
Never thought I’d agree with a video praising my second least favorite course (grumble volcano) but here we are. Great vid man
I love your videos they carry a happy feeling
Piranha Plant Slide is one of my favorite courses, and I'm really happy it was brought back for 8 and 8DX, and in the final cup for the game (until like 47 waves of DLC released including MK8DX including the 4 cups from 8's DLC in the base game lol)
12:15 I'm pretty sure the right path is slightly faster as that's the only one used in world records, but the left path is still satisfying and is an option for online if you want to avoid any chaos
Fun fact: Rainbow Road’s length in Mario Kart 64 is 2000 kilometers, according to ghost data.
Star Cup is my favorite nitro cup (and overall favorite in general). Lightning is my favorite retro cup. Lightning is like the retro version of Star Cup, full of intensity, energetic music, great atmosphere, and great track choices.
KA-CHOW!!!!!
I love N64 rainbow road so when I played the original in Mario kart 64 I was so glad that Mario kart 8 cut the track shorter also odyssey this vid was great I love your vids and I wonder what is your favorite mixed cup in Mario kart 8.
fun fact: nitro cups are called that because their origin was on the ds and the ds' codename was "nitro" (that's also the reason why 99% of ds carts have "NTR" on them!)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the DS was the only time they were officially labeled as "nitro" cups too.
Technically you're lying whenever you say an original course from Mario Kart 8 is a 'Nitro' course. Where is Ninja Hideaway in my copy of Mario Kart DS?
@@Aidea._. Yes. In Mario Kart Wii, they were named 'Wii cups'.
It would make me happy if you made a level by level about the seaside kingdom, i just think its very chill with lots of things to do.
Haven’t watched it yet and entirely agree with this video. One of my favorite cups of all time
15:11 the train that gives coins is there as a reference to Super Mario 3d World
I just noticed that I use the exact same combination of vehicle parts and character as you. Nice
Something no one ever mentions about piranha plant slide is that the pipe at the beginning is a split pipe like the one from the cutscenes before and underground stage in Mario 1, along with the castle area being the castle (🤯) Mario exits before entering the split pipe
the one thing about the grumble volcano remake i dont like are that the sections that fall are smaller so it really doesn't change the track nearly as much as in wii besides the ending shortcut. also no rock hop but that's understandable
My personal favorite retro track cup has always been the Banana Cup in MK7. Koopa Troopa Beach, Waluigi Pinball, and Coconut Mall are all fantastic renditions of the classic courses. SNES Mario Circuit 2 isn’t as good, but it’s still a really fun course, and I always found it fun to find shortcuts on it.
LOL I was just binge watching your videos when this released.
On piranha plant slide when coming out the underwater pipe section to the flight section in 7 you can go so high that you can fly over the gate's wall. 8 was unable to do this until it got the 200cc update.
Nice. Currently watching this while doing my homework due in a few hours. It’s 4 in the morning… kill me
Good video
Isn’t it a bit early to make this video? Or do you plan to do a separate video for the best from the booster course pass?
You should make a video where you rank all of the Mario kart shortcuts because I will definitely watch it!
Lightning cup in 7 is my favourite retro cup, Koopa Cape, Dino Dino jungle, Airship fortress and SNES rainbow road are pretty phenomenal 💛
While the Lighting Cup is 8 is great, I think 7's is a bit better.
I agree
3DS Piranha Plant Slide was so cool that Wave 6 of the BCP will have the two new Piranha Plant Attractions in it
This aged like a house made of bread
If it's alright with you I wanted to ask. If you had to put the original version of N64 Rainbow Road and Piranha Plant Slide in a tier where would they be. All of the changes that were mentioned in Plant Slide sort of makes it seem like you like it more than in Mario Kart 8 and you mentioned N64 Rainbow road is your least favourite Rainbow Road in the series so I'm curious where you would place them.
Mk7 piranha plant slide would also be B tier, I still like 8’s better but they’re close
N64 rainbow road might be D tier, I really don’t like playing on it
@@Odyssey_CentralN64 RR is D tier
Odyssey: puts N64 RR in F tier
I remember watching your original ranking of the mk8 cups and being somewhat surprised that Lightning Cup wasn’t number 1. Don’t get me wrong, I also love the Star Cup to death, but there’s something special about the Lightning Cup that sticks with me more
I tried waching this video on my tablet, but nana told me that it was bed time, and so hear i am! waching this video on my tablet in the morning!
Lightning Cup was my favorite before the dlc, now it’s hard for me to say it’s still on top when mk7 rainbow road came out
I don't have anything to say about this video. It's pretty good.
the train on n64 rainbow road remake was probably reference to kalamkari desert since the remake debuted in the original mario kart 8 before the switch let alone the booster course pass
Odyssey, what about a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe track music ranking? I honestly think it would be awesome, though I'm not sure whether it would be better to rank them all right now or wait until the booster pass is over.
At first I thought the Chain Chomp was a balloon but the realizing that it was an actual chain chomp bouncing around is 10x funnier
They should add an option to change the amount of laps, for those people who really rally want that long n64 rainbow road experience.
Only reason i don't think they would is they would have to rework some tracks that change as the match goes, like the showcased Grumble Volcano.
dude, how do you pump out banger content weekly?
I appreciate this is 20 minutes exactly.
Down to the frame
You know if the OG DLC are mixed cups, wouldn’t all of the BCP cups be considered retro cups because all the tracks in each cup are technically retro tracks from other games including Tour/Tour nitros
@@megastarwarsrocks99 That’s what I meant because a lot of people were confused if Sky-High Sundae and Yoshi’s Island are nitro or retros but they’re technically retros. They’re considered nitros for Tour but not for 8 Deluxe.
The 'new' Mario Kart Stadium, the 'old' Bangkok Rush. Guess which one was released first? It's really obvious.
On Priana Pipe Way, I think there is a flaw in which trying to cut too much off the vertical results in you not making it. Is this a deliberate design choice for learning or an oversight as this is to my knowledge, the only time this is a thing.
I Feel like the Goombas from the Piranha Plant Slide track were changed to brown to actually fit the rest of the color scheme
in the original it was more blue-ish than the remake, so i guess it would have looked weird for the blue goombas to appear while the rest keep having brown-ish colors
Good video, enough Super Mario.
One of the most fun and amazing things to do is driving through Wii Grumble Volcano in this game.
The Big 8 at the end on the map, for N64 Rainbow Road
ah my favorite cup in this game!
I still can't unhear it he sounds like he would voice cappy
nintendo added the train in the rainbow road for a rainbow road version of the train in kalamari desert. because both of the tracks are from mariokart 64
I personally think the leaf cup is the best one, but this one is good as well
I feel like for me the only thing that brings down Lightning Cup is Grumble Volcano. I never really liked it too much but the other three are solid.
While I do love Piranha plant slide, I think Wario Shipyard would have fit the lightning cup better imo.
Honestly shocked it wasn’t in the bcp. Especially since it was in tour
Tbh I think the main issues people have with N64’s rainbow road is that the track was both shortened AND turned into one lap, making it one of the shortest tracks in the series. Really, if they wanted to make it one big lap, they could have kept the length of the original N64 RR instead, but a much better solution would just be having a 2 lap race instead. Still really like the track though
let's hope the dlc will change this
I absolutely agree, now please release my family.
Wrong channel buddy boi.
Nope, you must solve my riddles 3 to make me unhand them. What are those riddles? Well that is your first riddle. Good luck.
@@Odyssey_Central odyssey please marry me
I agree 100%, but with BCP cups, the Moon Cup easily wins imo
Piranha Plant Slide (or Piranha Plant Pipeway for you nerds out there) is one of my personal favorite tracks in 7, and in the top quarter of my personal ranking of tracks.
Nice
"There were still a few changes tho, *so we will get to those when we get there*. For some reason I find that line extremely hilarious😂😂💀
Bruh
0:21 Erm, achtually Yoshi's Island is a retro track because it was made in Mario Kart Tour first 🤓. (Let's just ignore the fact that tracks are based on when they're first released, not when they're first made)
How does a course released in a mobile game more than 4 years after the original Wii U DLC count as a 'classic course'? All of the DLC cups are mixed cups.
Now its time to wait to see the best cup in the booster course pass...
Yeah.
Propeller/Rock/Moon/Berry are much better than the other 4 for some reason
Are you going to make a mixed cup video then???
3:54 double shock
The Moon cup begs to differ
Would be a contender if there wasn’t merry mountain imo that track is mid
@@jamiezsalmons honestly, I think grumble volcano is mid and boring so it evens out.
Grumble volcano is on my Top 5 Mario Kart Tracks EVER.
Glazing
11:47 i think it would be cool if you could do it but instead of getting a lap it would have an easter egg for it or something
I do wish they can let us do the Ultra Shortcuts on Wii retro tracks but only in time trials
I really hope in the next wave they give link a new alternative costume for his tiers of the kingdom look
Also for the N64 rainbow road remake, the music is *top tier*
I agree here, but friends of mine say the Lightning Cup, as well as other tracks, are too hard :(
They are easy Lmao.
I agree it's not only the best retro cup in 8 Deluxe but the entire series!
Actually the cardboard cut outs are actually from Super Mario 3D Land
you know it's good when Tick Tock Clock is the opener
I love the n64 remake track but I wish it was just a little bit longer
The Lightning Cup is one of the hardest cups to get 60 points on 150cc, Mirror Mode, and 200cc(from my experience at least)
Before even watching video I already agree
You'll be even more sad to know that the Grumble Volcano ultra shortcut got patched out in CTGP-R
Grumble Volcano is apparently very polarizing
My favorite cup of all time is the MK8 Banana Cup but I respect the opinion
I want to love the N64 Rainbow Road so much, but I just can't get over the single lap. I think a better route would've been to have it be two laps. Maybe they could've also done the Tour thing where it's 3 completely different laps, but that might've been too much of a departure.
Would've been really fun if the final lap had an immediate hard left into a glider as a really fun reference to that one shortcut everyone knows from the original.
Loved the video!
Though I think do slightly prefer the aesthetic of the MKDS version of Tick-Tock Clock, I fun it neat that it looked nearly identical to the stage from SM64DS
I think the best way to fix is to make an HD remake of Mario 64 and have tick tick clock look like the MK8DX version 🔥
@@Odyssey_Central That would be amazing! It'd be so cool if they did that, everything would come full circle.
I am guessing there is going to be one more with booster course but the best cup I think as of right now is the moon cup because
One of the best tour city tracks
A new fresh layout and third lap
A feeling of Christmas all year
The Best Rainbow Road ever S++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think 64s rainbow road music is the best of them all it feels like a celebration of the game in a way
Also ad I side note I'm so glad someone else knows how crap the original is
In my opinion the lightning cup IS the best cup in the series. 2 amazing tracks, 1 good one and my favourite track in the series, all with amazing music.
I like bright styles so i like the dlc better CRY ABOUT IT
Justice for blue goomba's!
