Your wisdom is just....well all I can say is that I am glad that the fish world has you in it. Your philosophy and approach to fishkeeping is wonderful - you definitely put a reality check on things like this - mulm. Your other older video about the beauty of a dirty tank is another prime example. "Aesthetics aren't always everything when it comes to keeping aquariums" - LRB. That quite honestly sums it up. Thank you for keeping things real and reminding us all of the vital role that natural cycles play as opposed to always trying to chase after constant "perfection".
I like your channel. You aren’t afraid to show us tanks that some you tubers would never admit having. In the real world where most of us live this is a often occurrence. I have mulm in one tank now.Watching you I have left it for the fish. I say what ever works for you is good enough for me. Thanks for all the education.
Love hearing you explain how different your tanks are. Thanks for taking the time!
Cool stuff. Love this series. Thanks Lucas!
I think of mulm as being the natural compost of aquariums - lots of way 'old school' aquarists think of it this way. I love this series! Keep doing what you're doing, Lucas 💕👍
I think the mulm makes the tank look more natural for sure, a paradise for those cory cats!
Love this series! thank you Lucas!! You Rock!!
Always something to learn from you! Great series!
Great video! Both content and I think this was the clearest quality video yet!
I love mulm... great info Lucas. I love your videos and the sharing of your knowledge in plain English. Keep up the great work Bro.
Looks like that should've been a water change Wednesday episode! Lol, I'm sure those fry n cats are digging it, plus it saves on fish food. Great video!
I really don't want mind algea etc in the tanks.. I do clean the front glass from time to time.
👍☑
I feel relieved to know that this "fluffy dust" ISN'T harmful to fish as long as it's somewhat controlled.. I've attempting to gravel vacuum it all up because of that worry. I honestly could care less about how "pretty" it looks. I've got way less than this in a 5 gallon that I've been setting up for a betta. I know that the source is mostly the dried oak leaves in there...
It should be noted that I've got gravel, not sand. But the "dust" looks exactly like tiny bits of this stuff.
Yes this mulm is actually very benefical to the aquarium and helps break down waste and all sorts of things. If you look out in the water ways in mother nature then you will see it exist everywhere naturally as well.
I’m always looking forward to your cool vids mate, keep them coming. 🤙
very interesting Lucas! I have a ton of hair algae in my pond and recently added some mosquito fish that have reproduced, but at the same time I put in water lettuce to help combat the hair algae naturally in the same way you are, great video bud!
Love it, great video!!
The mulm and algae are what I see down the river. Natural is a nice look.
Wow Lucus that’s a very cool old tank brother thanks so much for sharing
I enjoy your this old tank videos a lot and really hope you continue to put them up on your channel Lucas. A pristine planted aquascape is beautiful to look at but let’s be honest. Most people tanks aren’t fresh and new if they’ve kept fish for any amount of time. I learn more from the tot videos
Nice Lucas. I love your videos thanks bro .👍✌
That Old Tank is Cool. Thanks for sharing.Peace
Hey, love the channel and your fish rooms. Could you make a video that talks about the cup lids over your sponge filters? And maybe where you get the triangular sponge filters? I am interested in small hacks like the cup lids.. Show us all of your little tricks and hacks!
I will have to do that sometime. Some others have asked as well. The triangular sponge filter come from my lfs and havent been able to find them online.
TOT. AKA Lucas bretz, story time tanks. Lol. Always liked this series and all the rescaping projects, learned alot and the older videos, have all the bloopers with signs, symptoms and causes with examples, of colorful, verbal distress, in fish keepers and what to watch out for... that's very important information, jk, lol. Good to see the series is still going, the Tank renovation process videos you have done with, the before and after footage, in some of your videos is amazing, Bretz.
Great vid informative vid! Thankyou... agree with what you are saying 🤗
I love your videos!!!
I agreed my buddy has over 100 tanks in his basement and most has at lest 1/4" of it in them and his fish are healthy and happy
Keep on showing sir please and thank you
Wow L, that last tank at 7:14 is crazy!!
Late to the vid, sorry! Love the content that you bring that is backed up by video evidence
I like this video.... looks like my oldest tank, it has the same problem. But it is the best breeding tank ... My oldest zebra-fish are living there and the parents of all my Cory's. The only thing i do is cleaning the front window and some waterchanges. Never had any problems with this tank.
I 100% agree. If you are trying to breed, then a lot of tanks don't "look" great! As long as mine breed and make me money, I could care less what the tank looks like. As long as the fish thrive and love it.
No dislikes! All the fish folks are down with the LRB!
6 dislikes lol
Cool dude!
I like em messy too. In the lake its messy.
Hi Lucas, what is the plant, that you said controling the hair algae?
Permies like me like this approach
Thumbs up
In a natural pond mulm becomes an algal mat and is the base of the food chain and oxygen source for pond life including any fish living there.
What do you guys think?
125 gallon tank, heavily planted .-- Under-gravel filter --. 1" regular gravel over the filter --, on top of that lay 2" of Miracle grow potting soil. --on top of that 1" of regular gravel.-- With as many plants as I can afford at the time (: . The idea is to cut back on water changes or eliminate them all together. Only for Guppy's.. two or three Guppy trios from Guppy Train.
I would love to see the end results of this. If you can cure it with just the pearl weed and water lettuce
It should and is already working.
how did u get the algae to be so thickly coated?? it looks awesome! any tips?
Just time and nature. Vegetation material that does and breaks down helps speed and feed the algae mats.
My German ram tank looks like this they breed weekly mulm rocks
I let a pile of mulm accumulate in my (freshwater) sump a few inches deep and ended up with a mycobacteria infection....could be just that another fish brought it in, but what a disaster....
So sorry to hear that. It had to be the other fish. Mulm doesnt kill. If anything it saves your fish from impurities.
Aesthetics is too often the focus. Great info as always.
Lol Steve
👍🏼
Dude, sorry to bother you. Getting frustrated trying to make my water work. So it is 8.0 pH 250ppm out of the tap. I'm trying to naturally bring down the pH for the Caridinia shrimp. How do you feel about Apple cider vinegar or citric acid? I know you have hard tap water too. I just don't have RODI as an option. I appreciate your help.
Unfortunately RODI is the only option. Using acidic things creates too many problems for long term which you need for caridina since they dont breed as fast as neocaridina.
I managed to get the local Ice company to give 7ppm 6.8 pH. That will work till I can buy an RODI system.

Mulm only kills fish when it gets trapped under a thick layer of substrate (3+ inches of 5-10MM gravel), which becomes an oxygen depleted area, and anaerobic bacteria takes over and converts the mulm into methane. Having sand in a thin layer will prevent the mulm from building up under a deeply layered substrate and the catfish will keep it aerated by their pig like rooting behavior. Kuhli loaches are also good at stirring up sand substrates and enjoy mulm tank bottoms.
Shaden0040 I hear people repeating that all the time but from my experience that is not true..
That is odd because it happened to me when I was a teen in the 80s.
I have some deeper bed sand tanks and I have never had an issue.
I think if your tank was heavily stocked the mulen would kill your fish.
No. I have tried it. You just grow more algae. Algae is the great equalizer.
This tank desperately needs snails and shrimp
Lol
first
realy bad audio.
Lol yeah I was using a expensive RODE mic I just tried for the first time. Go figure lol
