Never ask a truck stop tech to peak you power! If you need more power buy a Amp. This happen to me... it sounded like a sloppy mess on several frequencies. These radios are set for maximum power output (safe) from factory for a reason. Thanks Mike for fixing my problems.

I'm grateful for your videos. They're a total electronics school! You have an ardent student here!! I've been a radio enthusiast for over 40 years and I'm wanting to do this full time when I retire. It's like the life I've always wanted and you're setting me up very well. Thank you!

Outstanding repair. Having the parts is the key. I have a spare crystal for a Clegg Venus that is very hard to find.

Only complaint I might have about the wattmeter is the use of RCA connectors. I see that the sensor is bolted to the back panel which is good and you're probably not going to be changing it often. Reminds me of what Heathkit (and Collins as I recall) used for RF and interconnects. I had to replace the entire strip of RCA jacks on the back of my Drake R-4C receiver years ago because they got dodgy as even the ceramic interior insulator material will degrade over time, especially with repetitive mechanical insertions/removals. Thanks for sharing Mike, good radio fix as usual.

I always despised the rca antenna jack on my old heathkit hw101. Changed it to so239.

Back in the day, we used to put the MB-8719 PLL chip in place of the 8734 and then you could make the address pins go below channel one and into the 10 meter band.

Wow, randomly looking at 2000gtl videos and found yours. Just posted 21 minutes ago.. crazy.. I recently acquired my father's 2000, he bought it in early 90s. It has some mods and dings on it.. I want to restore it, it all works perfect, except I don't need the mods as I'm a ham and have radios for that. I want to restore to factory eventually, however I'd like to fix the ugly holes in the bezel first, any idea where I can get a front bezel? Once I make it better looking ill remove all the mods if possible..

I have a Drake Receiver . it needs work. I wish you were around here I would have you work on it. it just stops on the freak counter there is probably more wrong. parts might be a problem. I also have a am one which is a boat anchor. my house got hit by a lighting strike and it got fried. it was just am. where the i bought later had am and side band.

OK it's been a loooong time but if mem serves the 2000 and 148 were the same radio and I THINK the original President Washington as well? (before Uniden ruined it) It may have been the Madison or Grant. On the vco coupling transformer in the counter I seem to remember they had a frequency that you just peaked it to but it could work better to just go for equal db down at 1 and 40. Seems like you had to do it that way if you expanded the PLL. I was never an authoritative cb tech.

Mike, I am curious. You seem to do a lot of rework on radios that have been butched. Why the decline in quality work and is it because the push to make money causes rush jobs and short cuts or is technical ability just declining?

    • @alberttatlock5237

It's all about what the customer is willing to pay, often the Labour charge on a big job outweighs the cost of replacing the radio or piece of equipment.
Things are made much cheaper today because they are expected to be upgraded, replaced more often, not such the case 30 or 40 years ago when a basic tv cost the equivalent of about 1000 bucks in today's money.
A new Homebase 40 channel c.b radio in 1980 cost the equivalent of a basic HF set today in real terms.
I could go out and buy a 26-30mhz anytone all mode, frequency and channel display, built in swr meter, echo Mic, 40 watts out the back, no drifting, for less than 250 bucks today.
Or I could pay 250 bucks to have a big repair job done on a cobra 2000, the cobra 2000 probably cost the equivalent of 600 or 700 bucks back when it was new

I've heard of people paying over $1000 to have a cobra 2000 restored. Unbelievable but it's what they want.

on that custom programmed rom, it should be possible (at least i would believe) to take a working one pull the programming off of it, and install it into a new blank chip if you can still get one or at least a working replacement.

What about taking the radio outside and blowing the dust off with compressed air?

    • @user-neo71665
      @user-neo71665 5 лет назад

You have to be careful with compressed air, it contains moisture. If using canned air the CO2 can cause problems on open boards.
