Trying to wrap my head around storage. Is the 2022 Mac Studio suited to this product from 2017? That's wild.

Okay so, i have a question. I'm using a 2019 Mac Pro together with one of the earlier Drobo's (i believe with TB1 or 2), i have it connected with a USB-C to TB2 connector to my Mac Pro. It's pretty fast and i honestly can't hear the fan. Is the fan in the Drobo 5D3 louder? And is it still worth it to buy this or is there a better solution? I have a Synology NAS as well, but of course, that's not so fast as a DAS. So that's why i'm trying to look in a different way. Or should i be better off with a NAS and put that NAS with SSD's? Not sure what to do so your help would be greatly appreciated!

Any chance you’re not still using your drobo? Any you have it sitting around the bottom of your closet? I need to buy a 5D3 and it’s a bit hard to source. Thought I’d take a shot and ask.

Setting up a Media Server with a Mac mini so the Drobo seems to be the best fit and I found everything you've said in this video to be what I've Sean, heard and read about the Drobo 5D.
The only nit I have is your comment and images of the dust issue. I have a hard time believing that dust has collected around the power port of a running Drobo. If it's running then the power connector will be inserted into that socket and there can be no dust. Hmm.

The machine should be conectes vía Thunderbolt 3, without it it’s extremely slow. I have a Drobo and I have been using them for more than 13 years. Even so I dm not sure about the future of the product line (the 8d was discontinued without a proper note in the web page or a proper press release )
So I would not invest on them today , no matter how much I love them. I never use them as a work drive (speed ) but as my local backup and backup (out site ).

guys, 6 months after buying my 5D3 Drobo, and adding 3 x 3 To IronWolf NAS HDD, i realized that out of nowhere one disk turned red. 2 weeks later, a second turned red. Now im runing with only one disk, waiting for the new to comes. Again, nothing happened to the drobo or the drives. Im lost and Drobo didn't reply to my mail/tweet. If you have any idea...Thanks

I know Drobo does not recommend it. But after formatting using Drobo software I use Windows Disk manager to reduce the size of the disk partition to actually under-provision to keep performance up and not have to with “fake” size in Windows explorer. But I agree it would be nerve racking to reduce the partition size on a Drobo already full of data unless you had a full backup.

Any mechanical RAID device, not just Drobo, uses a proprietary file system, it is the way mechanical raid works, I don't know how, it is above my pay grade. Windows storage spaces doesn't use a proprietary file systems. If Microsoft goes out of business we have problems. You can pop storage spaces in any Windows system, and it can read it. All backup systems compress files. At least they did in the 90s when I learned that the hard way. You have to have the original software to unlock it, you can make years of backups and if it can't be read you wasted years, and software companies tend to go out of business. This is something you learn about when you are older and younger people don't think about it.

Can anyone tell me how often I am supposed to shut down the Drobo? I can't find an answer anywhere except that it should be shut down during "extended periods of inactivity"?? Thank you!

Its a pile of over priced junk imo! I believe it encrypts the files so the only route of recovery if it fails and you don't have any other back up is to buy another drobo. Hmm I don't think I will be buying it. There are windows compatibility issues and drobo as a company are silent on the issue leaving many angry customers frustrated!! Not good!
