Say what you will about Kostner not doing an accent, but his was one of the most exciting and adventure-filled versions of the story done since Errol Flynn's. It was also great how they gave Robin Hood more historical grounding by bringing in Azeem the Moor and the Crusades. One of the best contributions that helped this movie was the fantastic score by the late Michael Kamen. I'm glad I'm able to listen to it outside of the movie itself for the very first time. You can hear all the beautiful nuances of the love theme, and the power of the heroic theme. So good!
it was a great movie!!! ...except for costner. movie would've been better served if robin was played by someone who could do an authentic english accent and wasn't so... american! the role was filled with pain, but costner could only scratch the surface of it. he did the dashing hero thing well, but in the quiet moments his robin lacked soul. morgan freeman should've been nominated for best supporting actor for azeem. he did much credit to the idea of the wise, educated muslim in a foreign land. if only costner could've matched his depth.
the accent nonsense is the biggest nothing-burger ever. no one cares. phenomenal performances by freeman and rickman, beautiful cinematography, amazing michael kamen score, gtfo!
After countless incarnations the story about Robin Hood had for the big screen, "Prince Of Thieves" (1991), starring Kevin Costner, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Alan Rickman, was a major success at the time and is often quotet as such. It was even the main base for Mel Brooks' "Men In Tights" (1994). Although its storyline is said to have some flaws here and there, the musical score was on point and is surely one of Michael Kamen's greatest (and lush orchestrated) of his entire career. Enjoy!
Spot on sir. The score is stunning and the cinematography and locations make it a masterpiece. Also, Bryan Adam's song is just the icing on the cake 👌🏼
Its really good. Adventures of Baron Munchausen is my favorite Kamen score and tops Robin Hood imo. Just listen to Vulcan and Venus starting at the 4 minute mark. The whole score is so fantastical.
Despite all the flak this movie received, it is one of the most influential pieces that defined my childhood, especially the soundtrack. I was in my school band at the time and it seemed every school was playing some version of the main theme. Just hearing this after so many years passed, it just brought back so many happy memories.
The movie may be a bit dated by modern standards, even a bit corny, but this overture stands among the greatest heroic themes of cinema history. The brass, strings and woodwinds all complement with fugal imitations, playfully handing off melodies to each other. The timbre vascilates between swashbuckling courage and delicate emotion, breathlessly capturing the selfless spirit of the character. Michael Kamen was an underappreciated genius who deserves a place alongside Horner, Mancini, Bernstein, Hermann and Copland in the pantheon of great film composers.
Calling something "dated" is a detracting and superficial way of pointing out how long ago it was made, a factor which should not be considered an imperfection. Imagine talking about a movie made in 1991, just to call it "dated" 30 years later. You're essentially saying that it's too indicative of its time period to be good, which is kooky talk. And considering that this film is set centuries ago, talking about it being "dated" is irrelevant.
He was in good form. Alan Rickman played the Sheriff of Nottingham just perfectly. Just enough wit to make you laugh a little bit, but with enough megalomania to make you hate him.
I voted for Alan Rickman to the MTV "Best Movie Villain". "Lockesly … I'm going to cut your heart out with a spoon!" "Why a spoon, cousin … why not a dagger or an axe?" "Because it's dull you twit! It'll hurt more!!" And then after murdering his cousin … "Well at least I didn't use a spoon" Gonna really miss you, Alan!
"Look, mistletoe! Many a maid's lost her resolve to me thanks to this little plant" "Where I come from, we talk to our women. We do not drug them with plants" Always gets me 😂.
I saw this movie when it first came out in 1991 and used it as a teaching aid to my Accounting students at the local Community College and reminded them that this movie correctly historically documents that Robin Hood and His Band of Merry Thieves Did NOT steal from the Rich and give to the Poor as is so often commonly portrayed, BUT that he Recovered the Overpaid Taxes from the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham who had overtaxed the Poor and he returned the taxes as a Tax Refund to the Poor, which is the correct version.
I’ve heard many compilations of scores, including ones for this film, but this is the best compilation for this score I’ve heard. It’s great how so much of the unreleased (until Intrada got it out) stuff was incorporated here. Bravo!
Sadly that he passed too early to soon, but he didn't copy and/or combined from other great (Classic) composers. He was and is a Man in his one right, a true genius.
i discovered this soundtrack only recently and honestly... what a beautiful heart and mind michael kamen must have possessed to compose such beautiful music. i'm obsessed.
I 💘 this movie. Even thougj its been over 30 year's since it was seen. Kevin Kostner, Morgan Freeman Christian Sllater and Mary Mostreono make it a classic. Anyeays, Robin Hood and Maid Marian make a asdume 💘 story and always will.😊
I found myself watching this last night and couldn't help but think of every corresponding scene in Men in tights. Best two robinhood films ever. Change my mind ;)
It was a marmite film. There were haters, but more than enough lovers and casual fans for it to be one of the top hits of 1991. Heck, that Bryan Adams song alone probably made more money than some entire movies from that year.
because movie critics are miserable people and are too smug to give genuine praise to anything that isn't a foreign film where someone stares at a wilting rose for 4 hours.
You should add composer, George Fenton, to the playlist. Listen to the score to the film, "Dangerous Beauty." You will discover what exquisite music that he composed!
The music score is fantastic. I didn't like much the movie but I remembered some good moments mainly for the music. About "Men in tights" I think it was based on the classic version starred by Errol Flynn and Olivia de Haviland.
Hello there, of course Brooks combined parts from both. The uniform of Hood and his merry men was based on the 1938's version, but the plot, likewise the flight of Hood from over the sea was based on the 1991 one. Some character-looks, too, like the Sheriff of Nottingham. But in the end it doesn't matter. It's a very unique and enjoyable Robin Hood adaptation on its own. :-)
You leapt to the top of Nakatomi Plaza, fought drug dealers in Lethal Weapon, and went rogue in Licence To Kill. Now, have turn outlaw with Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

Mr. Costner is a phenomenon. After years with more medicore movies he is back as a tv star with Yellowstone. But my favorite movies are Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Untouchables and Open Range
What a great composer he was!😪
R.i.P Michael Kamen!
Hes dead?

True. I especially love the trumpets, of which the recording captures a powerful and direct sound. And the celli, when they "sing", are marvellous.

it only received flak from critics. audiences the world over said "Go fuck yourself" and make it a gigantic, beloved success.
One of my all-time favourite scores. An absolute masterpiece of music.

it's a great movie with many memorable part, the cinematography is amazing and as well as this score
Yeah, the only thing bothering me with it are the Celts and their weird outfits.
I love this movie and the song 🎵 too this is the best Robin Hood movie ever 😏🏹 I was 13 years old when this movie came out in 1991
I fell in love with the main title of this movie. This is one of my favorite movies. This piece alone made me want to be a hero. Wow what a song.
Listened and continue to lusten to rhis album throughout my life. One of themost harmonious scores and timeless. My first CD 😊
Love this movie and especially the soundtrack! Beautifully done suite, Soundtrack Fred! Thank you so much! 🥰

Costner-Rickman one of the greatests hero-villain couples.

You used Prince of Thieves for historical accuracy?...🤣🤣🤣
Dont get me wrong, this movie is fun, but there is not even an ounce of historical accuracy.
how beautiful this score

Beautiful Score. Kamen I believe. Braveheart composer my favorite.
I know this movie gets some flak these days but I don't care. Too me it's a great film. The sort of fun adventure movie we rarely get anymore.
This was one of my favourite childhood movies still love it no matter how corny it is
Saw this with my granny when it first opened, Alan Rickman changed my life.. movie was dope too. Costner should have spent some time in the gym tho.
Costner should have spent more time in the gym because Little John knocked him off the log in the stream in their pole joust ? Ha Ha!
He should have spent a lot more time with the elocution tutor.
Wowwwww excellent!
You could use this for the Olympics!

Why does disney use the title theme for their various "montages"? It's been bothering me...
I keep hearing a perfected version of this opening credits in my head. The orchestra was not up to task. They sound tired.

Oh man, this score gets on my nerves. So over orchestrated and so much of it is recorded at such a high volume.
