I'm 71 middle class/small business. Trump did exactly what I hired him to do, try to stop this corrupt government from taking all we earn and all our rights. I used to work in the bastion of Liberalism in Austin, Texas. Back when Trump was President it was amazing to hear my liberal friends and co-workers rag on Trump supporters in general, calling them evil, vile names. Most of them still do. But when I confront them in person and tell them I'm a Trump supporter and ask "do you think that about me?" They'll say "not you Postoastie, you're different." But I'm not. I'm just like every other Trump Supporter. I want freedom, not force. I want the government to leave me alone and let me thrive, or fail. I want to keep most of what I earn. I don't want to be afraid of the words I use. I don't want to lose my job because I called someone he or her instead of they or them or whatever the hell THEY feel like being called that day. That's all I want, and what most of my conservative friends want too.

There's a theory, one that explains a lot of things, that every human being has a deep store of anger built up from every form of perceived grievance or abuse that they've suffered in their life. It wants an outlet. Since about 2012, the deep pool has grown exponentially and it's led to depression, anger, and prescription drug abuse.
Trump showed up just at the right time to become the focus of that anger and they've been feeding it back to each other since 2015.
There's also a religious component to it that nobody wants to talk about in the right terms. The left are not atheists despite what they claim. The two sides believe in two different Gods who are at war with each other. That complicates things immensely. People who believe that they have the holy truth can't give in to evil.
