    your timeline is in 24fps, in resolve playbacks according to your timeline FPS not the actual video's FPS, if want 60 fps playback you have to create 60 fps timeline, you can also have multiple timeline at same time, also if you want resolve to show frame drop there is a option > show all frames in that viewer window.✌

    For a really fair test you have to set native parameters in DaVinci for each clip. When creating a new timeline, uncheck "Use Project Settings" and manually set the resolution and framerate according to the source.
    Noise reduction is the Achilles heel of any graphics card, it's not a deal breaker, and besides, if Premiere doesn't have it, I'd pick some common effect like Glow, or motion blur, or Camera Lens Blur, which both programs have.
    Anyway, keep up the good work, I love your tests:)

    Your project settings are to set to 24fps under timeline / playback frame rate, hence the 24fps limit.

    This is why I switched a couple of years ago to DaVinci resolve. They do programming right and I've had a much better experience in editing videos. They just do a better job with the hardware usage. For the cost Adobe charges, you would think they would get their act together but....I just got tired of the bugs and hardware issues with PP

      Yep. Resolve is both better and more affordable. The other thing I really like about resolve is that it can import MKV files which is the default file created by OBS which is a program lots of people use to record their screen. Being able to work with the MKV file directly is much better than remuxing it into an MP4.

    @5:30 When you create a new project, lets say we want 4k 60fps timeline and 4k 60 fps playback, go to project settings>master settings: select the following
    ==>Timeline resolution(4k)>Timeline Frame Rate(60)>Playback frame rate(60).
    Then on the same project settings, go to "Video Monitoring" tab>Video Format==>UHD 2160p 60
    This should set our timeline to 4k60 and video playback to 4k60 when viewing/scrubbing.

    This is basically a useless test, as you're playing non 24 FPS videos on a 24 FPS time line.
    To test the smoothness of 60 FPS video, you must create a new project or a new timeline,with the correct FPS.
    If you want to play a video with a different FPS, than the one in the project/timeline setting, you'd need to change the speed of the clip.

    I think its the fact that its a Radeon GPU that kinda bottlenecks the Ryzen 9. Of course Intel will be definitely better for video editing due to the decoders on the UHD 770, however I feel that the Ryzen 9 7950x and an NVIDIA GPU might be quite a bit better than the RX 7900 XTX. Would be interested to see you test that combo!

    • @georgedaswani9155
      @georgedaswani9155 Год назад +3

      Why are pro's worried about decoders? Most pro's have an ingest server where the source video is transcoded to create proxy files in either PRORES or DNXHR, same ingest server will also convert the final output (immediate output is usually either PRORES or DNXHR as well) for consumer consumption preferably using X264 or X265 for the best quality / size (software encoding). The hardware encoders that comes with the video cards are trash compared to what X264 or X265 can produce.
      Honestly, it's BS editing video using source clips in H264 or H265 (consumer delivery codecs) - proxied clips using PRORES or DNXHR is just so much smoother / scrubbing / timeline editing. Additionally, a lot of pro's use Apple Equipment as well so Intel \AMD and NVIDIA are not relevant. Resolve 18 eve comes with a "PROXY GENERATOR" standalone app to make this easy. And supports "multiple editors" in the same project (multiple computers) by creating the project in PostgreSQL server ( which can also be running on the ingest server ). Simplifies backing up as well.
      His workflow needs to change. Linus Tech Tips has an army of video editors and they use an ingest server and properly proxy the files for best editing performance. It's not expensive to build and create an ingest \ NAS server nowadays (if your work depends on it), and connect it to a client workstation using 10 gigabit ethernet with the local NVME acting as a scratch / proxy media source.
      Tech Notice needs a paradigm shift and stop pushing timeline editing with "CONSUMER CODECs for source clips", I don't even see the render cache being used. You don't need "4090's" on the client computer and can run with less hardware as long as you handle the input properly. Most video editing programs can't use all the the CPU cores, so it's best to have more cores in your ingest server instead to speed up proxy generation, and X264 and X265 will happily use as many as you throw at it.

      @@georgedaswani9155 I am interested in knowing more about this workflow. Have a link somewhere? Most of my raw footage is either from OBS or my iPhone 13 Max. I am not a Davinci expert but learning.

    • @georgedaswani9155
      @georgedaswani9155 Год назад +1

      @@CreateNowSleepLater The easiest way to do this for windows guys would be to setup another windows workstation to act like file server / ingest station.
      1. Build windows 'INGEST' workstation (10 GB ethernet)
      2. Install Davinci Resolve on it (1 studio key can be installed on two workstations )
      3. Create the following folders and share them "Media", "Projects", "Output", "Backup" and share them.
      4. Copy your media to the INGEST workstation "Media" folder preferably from the INGEST workstation via whatever mechanism you need (USB3,Thunderbolt,Card Reader)
      5. Have Davinci Resolve generate the "Media" proxies - for Windows, probably a good idea to use DNXHR
      Davinci Resolve 18 comes with a program called the "Proxy Generator" which watches a folder then automatically generates proxies but for pro use, kind of useless currently as it proxies to consumer codecs (H264,H265) unlike the full program which can create proxies in DNXHR. I'm sure they'll be updating it soon enough to support DNXHR and PRORES.
      6. On your "EDITING" workstation, you can map the INGEST workstation shares as drives.
      8. Create a new project on your editing PC (make sure you write the project in another shared folder 'Projects' from the INGEST workstation.
      7. Add the media to your project from the Shared Folder @ ingest server 'Media'
      8. On your project settings, make sure you configured your "Cache files location" to your workstations SCRATCH disk, additionally - enable the 'render cache' as well
      9. Once you are done editing your timeline, export it using DNXHR as the codec to 'Output' share in your INGEST worksation (aka, intermediate output)
      10. In your INGEST server, convert the [intermediate output] file to your final [consumer output] file preferably with something that uses X264, or X265. It's fairly easily to automate this using powershell scripts but you can easily use HANDBRAKE to do this.
      Note - you will get the best 'consumer output' files using this workflow as X264 and X265 produces much better output at the same file sizes. Additionally, you don't have to wait for Davinci Resolve to finish generating the PROXIES on the INGEST station. You can start editing on your EDITING PC while it generates the proxies and you'll notice timeline performance will get better and better. On my EDITING PC, I have an OPTANE NVME drive as a scratch disk for the 'render' cache as it has much better write endurance than TLC / QLC NVME devices. 120GB Optane NVME drives are dirt cheap right now, less than 80$.
      Davinci has advanced features for allowing multiple editors work to work on the same project / timeline - and that has to do with installing a PostgreSQL server on the INGEST server. No need to do that if you are a lone editor but you can easily add other workstations as well if you have help.
      Honestly, the price of the hardware originally being discussed is ridiculous (4090?). You can easily build two machines for the same price going this with slightly lesser / more affordable hardware (no need for a 13900K, or a 7950 on the editing PC, most video editors can't use all them cores). I say go with an 8-core on the editing workstation, and 16 on the ingest workstation (X264, X265 won't have any problems doing realtime+ encoding of your consumer output video as it's happy to use all of them). Additionally, tone down on the video cards as well. The INGEST workstation will still need a video card though to support proxy generation but that can be cheaper card - plenty to chose from.
      Finally, make sure you have a good BACKUP solution on your INGEST server (might even want to look at Tape Drives for backup), the workstations themselves don't really need a backup solution as they are fairly easy to rebuild - but you can back them up occasionally on INGEST workstations 'Backup' share (using the backup tool built into windows).
      Basically, 10GB ingest workstation, 10GB ethernet switch (5 port?), and workstations with 10GB ethernet as well.

I'm not going to upgrade this round, but it looks like I'm going back to Intel when 14th Gen comes out... unless they change something and screw it up, which I don't see happening. But perhaps AMD will improve with Zen4+ or Zen5. What I would be interested to see now, is how Arc compares against the AMD, NVIDIA and the Intel iGPU offerings. I'd really be curious to see if it can make an existing AMD system competitive with an Intel system using the iGPU.

    4090 with an i9 12900k is so insane with the amount of encoders and decoders I have. 8K 30fps footage and it only drops frames at the start then picks up. With my old 3080 I was using 100% of the GPU in resolve but now I’m down to 50% with the 4090. Compare that to Premiere where it doesn’t use the 4090 like it should and my 8K footage is super hit or miss. Adding an effect on top makes everything worse.

      I personally prefer using DaVinci, for once there's an actual free version and I'm digging the unified workflow where there's everything you need in the program. and if you need more power the Studio version is a one time payment and you get really powerful tools, some powered by AI, against which Adobe don't really compete (especially in denoising, color correction, synchronizing clips etc)
      but the software and workflow reaches another level when you add blackmagic cameras into the mix too, you can record 6K BRAW footage and 1080p "ISO" footage simulatneously, use the ISO files for the actual editing, colour grading and whatnot, then substitute them for the 6K files when you're done. The 1080p files essentially serve as a proxy so you're editing off lighter files but when it comes to the export you have the full quality of your camera

    Adobe premiere is a neglected software. I wonder why adobe tries so hard to upsell their severely unoptimized softwares

    I think you're confusing some things in your conclusion. You say "As you saw, when we were at the H.265 codec here, because AMD doesnt offer hardware acceleration". That's just wrong! Of course it does!
    Whether the software does, or a specific feature in the software does, is a completely different story!
    It's not up to AMD to implement this into the software, it's up to the developers of the software!
    This is at least your second video, that is heavily flawed. You lost me, I'm unsubscribing!
