Okay . Let's call it what it was then . Dirty money.. loan sharking isn't exactly honest ways of making money by beating and ultimately killing in some rare case's. And make a strong note here. The Italian Mafia linked to the American Mafia will never go away.... that thee mafia is still large and doing well. As in the past month ? Italian Police with the aide of the FBI. Just rounded up and busted 19 monster's from Italy to N.Y.C. and parts of Canada. Like Toronto and there has also recently as of earlier this summer a Canadian base Montreal Italian mob family feud happened where one guy in the construction industry there? Got taken out. There is plenty of Mafia out there still today it's just that they really aren't out there to draw attention unless ? Something of course goes? A bit side ways. Then the Joe public ? Hears about it. And if you live or have lived in the big city's in the Northeast ? Then chances are you've crossed paths a time or two with them and in some counts? Never even knew it on the streets. Ciao.

Genovese insisted to come with him and hide in the trunk of the car in order to back him up if any thing went wrong but Luciano refused; He went by himself. Then, He met Maranzano near by the dock after midnight and it was all about killing Masseria. Maranzano wanted Luciano to be the guy who pull the trigger because Masseria was will protected and a hard target; He needed someone cloes to get the job done, but Luciano refused. Luciano said in his book" He hurt people pretty bad, but never murdered any one. As of orchestrating murders, yes he did". That was their conflect. As subsequense, Masked men came out of now where tied him up and start beating him and Maranzano was standing behind and kept telling him the beating would be stopped if he agreed to get the job done; He endured the beating and managed to free himself and jumped onto Maranzano and grabbed his nuts; Maranzano started screaming with pain '' kill him kill him" but before that could be done, Maranzano staggered to his feet and slashed Luciano's face with a knife and then one of the masked assailants took out a gun and aimed at Luciano. Suddenly, Maranzano snappped said '' No let him live. He'll do what has to be done or we will see him again"

My name is Melody Luciano Norris. Charles was my uncle. I would like to thank you for actually pronouncing our name correctly!!!!!!!!!!! Do you know how many people pronounce it Lucy anno? That drives me nuts! Anyhow, I would also like to thank you for pointing out some of his achievements that did better the world. A lot of people don't know those things about my uncle. He actually gave to charity rather frequently and was known to be generous. Starting young? Yeah well, all us Luciano's are young starters and believe in hard work from a very young age. So no surprise there! The dollar bill I found out about after the auction closed so I asked Christies to put me on a watch list for it in case it comes up again. I was actually a bit surprised about it myself. Seems my uncle had a few fans out there. Basically not much of this was new to me but I did enjoy how you presented Uncle Charles. Very classy.

Same. I am not even Italian, but I take Latin, and the word "Lucius" [Loo-shes] means light, so I know that when someone pronounces it like Lucy-anno, they are wrong and it makes me annoyed very much. Especially when watching the "Inside the Episode" segments on Boardwalk Empire. Terrence Winter pronounces it wrong all the damn time.

@@samuelebaldessari6469 UMM?? I think I know my own name!! LMAO!! We use the name Lucky Luciano when speaking to those outside of the family as most people don't recognize my uncle by his real name. If you were my cousin or what have you then I would refer to him by his real name. Also, when our family came to America we were given the name Luciano because Americans seem to have big troubles with understanding and interpreting the Italian language. By the way, it is Lucania and not Lucani! If you really want to question my name and drag it through the mud, you should do some research first!! LOL!! Our name comes from a region of Southern Italy called Lucania which is now the Basilicata region of Italy. Lucania meant land from which there is light. We are often referred to as Lucanians by the way. All that said, his real name is Salvatore Lucania. His mom was Rosalia Rosalina Capporelli Lucania
BIRTH MAY 1866 • Lercara Friddi, Città Metropolitana di Palermo, Sicilia, Italy DEATH 8 AUG 1935 • Manhattan, Kings, New York, USA and his dad was Antonio “Anthony” Luciana BIRTH JUNE 28, 1858 • Lercara Friddi, Città Metropolitana di Palermo, Sicilia, Italy, Lercara Friddi, Provincia di Palermo, Sicilia, Italy DEATH JANUARY 05, 1935 • Manhattan, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USA, New York, New York, United States That information was copy and pasted from my Ancestry tree. Notice that the name Lucania changes to Luciana on the Ancestry site? Yeah, there are literally a million versions of our name out there. On my grandma's side, we have the Pollinos. My family on that side shows up as Paulino, Paulina, Pollina, and Pollino. It is just the way it is in families from Italy. So we roll with it and play along with those who don't understand or don't care to understand. I simply cannot educate the entire world as to our family's life story, nor do I care to!! I just was commenting on here how nice it is that someone actually took the time to pronounce it correctly!! Sorry if you found that offensive but I'm sure there are worse things in life! LOL!!

    1. The assault on Luciano was orchestrated by Maranzano, Maranzano was present and took part in the attack. This was because Luciano would not agree to kill Masseria personally, if he were to do that, Sicilian underworld law stipulated Luciano could not then make a push for the top seat himself. This was Maranzano’s insurance. Lucky refusing to agree to this confirmed him as a direct threat to Maranzano. He was only spared because he was one of the few people who could get close enough to Masseria as he was his 2IC at the time.
    5. Luciano did not participate or encourage profiting from prostitution or drug trafficking on moral and practical grounds. He was charged and eventually sentenced with prostitution charges because it was the only charge they could make stick. It was later confirmed that witnesses falsified testimonies under indirect instruction of attorney general Thomas Dewey.

    6. Operation Underworld as it was called by the US Army was orchestrated completely by Luciano, Lansky, Anastasia and others.
Anastasia had a brother with great influence in the waterfront union. They sabotaged an abandoned Vessel to create panic over suspected espionage on the New York shores. They then established who was tasked to address the problem and subtly nudged him in the direction of Luciano via the leader of the Fish Market.
Entirely orchestrated by Luciano and other factions of the commission in order to achieve a plea bargain, which was almost successful. The only downfall was the conditions of release involving extradition.

Charlie Lucky seemed to be an openminded spirit when it comes to crime. I have heard i he was not so much into classical rituals of the mafia. It says that Meyer Lansky adviced him to keep on doing blood oaths and such to retain the mystique in the mafia. I Think he was genuinely liked and admired by the younger generation of mobsters at that time. He still has a certain air around him. I guess it,s easy to glamorize him and that era, it,s fascinating when you have distance to it. When it comes to his nickname lucky i,ve heard it,s because his name was Salvatore Lucania. His friends called him Charlie Lucky. Lucky because of his last name. They did not call him Lucky Charlie. Later on in media it became Charles Lucky Luciano. But who really knows?

No, it's the other way around. Joe Masseria was Lucky's boss. Lucky doublecrossed Joe Masseria by secretly joining Salvatore Maranzano and killing his own boss, Joe Masseria in 1931. Lucky secretly joined Maranzano on the condition that when Joe Masseria was dead, Salvatore Maranzano would agree to enact Lucky's vision of running the mob like a business and would stop trying to take over all crime in NYC by becoming the "boss of bosses" the way things were ran back in Sicily. Maranzano agreed.... at the time.
After Masseria was killed, Maranzano broke his pledge and proclaimed himself the new "boss of bosses" at a post-war ceremony, where he made all the other bosses in attendance line up to kiss his ring. Lucky was secretly infuriated over this, but you would've never known it.
That was Lucky Luciano's genius. He was the first mob boss who wasn't emotional and quick to anger. You could read the other bosses from a mile away, but never Lucky Luciano.
A few months later, Lucky hit Maranzano and followed through on his vision of progress by establishing the Commission, where every crime family, no matter where they were in the country, had an equal say in matters. No more bosses of bosses. No more kings and empires. In other words, no more wars.
From that point on, the Mob was a board of directors.

    7. He did not flea to Cuba to avoid deportation. He was heavily guarded right up until he was transported to Sicily.
He secured an additional passport before leaving New York and, after some months, in Italy - travelled to Cuba to discuss potential hotel operations with Lansky.
His trip was cut short as authorities were made aware of his presence in Cuba and put pressure on the Cubans to deport him, this included embargo’s on medical deliveries from the US to Cuba. It was heavily suspected by Luciano and others that authorities were alerted by Genovese.

Genovese family came from Lucky's family. When Lucky went to prison Genovese was in charge, but he had to flee to Italy because he was going to be charged with murder. Frank Costello ran things while he was gone and when the witnesses ceased to exist Genovese came back and wanted his position back. He eventually tried to kill Costello using Vincent Gigante. Frank had enough and retired. Thus the Genovese family was born.

Couldn't watch past the first thing because you got it wrong. Charles "Lucky" Luciano was apart of the Masseria crew during the Castellammarese War with Maranzano. But when it appeared that Masseria was losing the war, he switched sides and set up his former boss Joe Masseria's assassination, therefore winning the war for Maranzano. And as far as who jumped him, it was assumed it was Maranzano's men, but there has also been speculation that it was Masseria's guys and Masseria could make it appear it was Maranazano, therefore ensuring Lucky's loyalty to Masseria's family. But Lucky knew that if it was really Maranzano he would definitely be "sleeping with fishes." Lucky was much smarter than those 2 mustache petes.
