      It's never been about fairness, fairness has absolutely nothing to do with all of this.
      Imagine I (canada) produce and sell beef and you (US) make and sell milk. Each year you buy $10 000 in beef from me while I only buy $ 7 000 worth of milk from you.
      Maybe milk is a lot cheaper and I don't really need more than that. Or maybe half of my family is lactose intolerant. It doesn't really matters here. The US buys more because it's unable to produce and meet the demand from it's own citizen. It's just cheaper to import it from another country.
      That's the trade balance Trump calls unfair. I (canada) am certainly not going to buy more milk, that I really don't need, from you, just to make you happy. You (US) wouldn't be happy either if I decided to only sell you $ 7 000 of beef, leaving you wanting that extra $ 3 000, in the name of fairness.

Although the Canadian situation is not much better right now there will no doubt be a new leader with a strong mandate in the near term and dealing with the Trump gang should not take much intellectual capacity. I hope that 2 things come from this as a Canadian: 1) we stop relying on the US for economic expediency and strategic defence and begin to diversify our trading relationships and 2) that we finally get serious about having 'free trade' with our own provincial jurisdictions which alone is predicted to add 3 pts to GDP which is what it sounds like we are going to lose with the Trump Tax. Finally, I do not believe we are going to see any new trade deals during Trump's term unless the global community bands together and hits the US hard to force change. I am not holding my breath on this and think this is the new 'normal' for many years to come.

    They say the average American will only pay about $80 more per month with Trump's import tax.
    That's probably with selective buying. Like many of us do now.

    I spent my career traveling the world, proud to tout Canada's relationship with the US. We were cousins. We had each other's back and also respected the uniqueness and value of the other. Sadly I - and I dare say most Canadians - have for now, lost that feeling of kinship towards our American neighbours. Trump has unleashed economic war on Canada for reasons nobody, including Trump, can reasonably explain. While the US won't win this war, its obvious Canada will suffer an order of magnitude more. We understand that the it could prove devastating. There will be a strong feeling in the Country that we can't let ourselves be this vulnerable again, and this will most certainly lead to developing other trading and possibly strategic relationships that will further split the 'family' and won't serve American interests in the long term. It is a sad day for North America.

    Well, here is what is going to happen in Canada. 4 Infrastructure projects I can think of. Canada will create a "Canada Only" Free Trade agreement going East-West instantly replacing 20% of the economic loss to the States from this Tariff War. 2nd, Canada will finish the east-west pipeline for temporary oil and gas transportation bypassing the US Mid-West. It will then turn to Germany for money to quickly build out east coast LNG plants. The Germans and rest of the EU will jump at the chance to get out from under Trump and Putin when it comes to safe and secure winter home heating resources. 3rd, Ottawa will subsidize Alberta to take their upgrader plants and fully convert them to finished refineries on the promise that the Feds will build a deep water oil export facility in Hudson's Bay to ship oil and gas products to Eastern Canada through the NWP without having to go by land through Eastern Canadian population centres. While also staking its claim to the NWP as a non-international internal waterway to Canada, now patrolled by Canada's 6 new Navy Icebreakers. Fifth, Military Procurement: Canada will look to Europe and itself for military procurement. There will be no more 88 plane F35 contract, No 16 P8 Posiedon contract, No 12 E7 WedgeTail Contract, No 15 Destroyer Agesis 7 contract. No NORAD Beyond the Horizon Radar Site install and you can basically take the 2% NATO commitment and shove it up Trump's ass

    Excellent video. I appreciate the take you have on this. As a Canadian, I am furious. I have travelled the US extensively and have always enjoyed my time there. Amazing hospitality, incredible sites, but this hit at us from you government is a low blow. Not happy and will suspend all travel to the USA. I hate to impact the American People, but you all voted for him so we can only take this personally.

    Tariffs on oil means increased prices immediately. Tarrifs on cars don't immediately jack up prices, giving the US and Canada time to work a deal.

    Trump is brilliant. He wants to disrupt globalization and that entails pushing nations to rethink their entire trade and investment outlook, to orient themselves towards more emphasis on self-sufficiency and domestic market.

      Except that the global distribution of resources is uneven; the reason that self sufficiency is an unachievable pipe dream and that international trade exists in the first place. Best to come back to reality than live in a self destructive delusion.

    • @Yasen99
      @Yasen99 2 часа назад

      @ Uneven, right. That’s why the world economy which is now reaching unparalleled degree of inequality and disparity will be for an extended period devolved into a set of macroregions with relative self-sufficiency (nobody is talking about completely ending international trade and capital flows). We are not talking about eliminating international trade and capital flows but about rebalancing the relationship between national (regional) economies and the world economy in favor of the former. This RELATIVE self sufficiency will allow governments to buttress their domestic capabilities and will then set the stage for a transition to socialism which should have begun in the 1980s but was torpedoed by the opening of China and the defeat of the USSR in the Cold War.
