You can do spins, twirls, and tosses while maintaining a beat. You can also alternate hands to allow for more variety (so you aren't doing this with just one hand). I have many examples on my channel (i dont explain it, but you can see it). I don't want to paste the link for fear of spamming. I will say this, you offer good explanation of the twirl. Someone else also suggested Drumstick Spinology. I'll second that.
Man I have to say I want to learn how to spin the I guess useless way but this is definitely the more important one to learn seeing as how it's so easy to implement into playing. Just want to say ty this is the most brilliant technique for live performance I have learned yet by far. With practice you can really turn some heads on stage if you can pull this trick fast enough! even if people don't think it's hard cause you don't really spin the sticks it still looks awesome! TY GREAT TUTORIAL! : D
I've seen so many drummers do this, they move so quickly I could never figure out how it was done. Thank you so much for clarifying this. It's not nearly as complicated s I though.
dude the the twirl takes up just as much time as the spinning, and spinning takes more skill, especially to incorporate it into drumming, and in fact you can spin and play at the same time, it makes drumming more stylish for stylish people. but yeah spinning, if youre good at it, can be done quickly enough to create no time lag in your playing at all.
Hi - well it is a little different for different peope, but MOST often if the stick is traveling thn there are two likely causes. One the fingers are too tight on the stick making a firm V shape means the stick can only slip out more easily. As you get better you will tend to relax the hand and it sticks better. The other thing is the tip of the index finger - give it a little curl in through every spin as shown to hold the stick down into the V. Good luck!
Thanx, That was semi helpful. it is improving and seems to be stable at slow speeds. Will just have to practice. My drum teacher does it really fast and he says that everytime it starts travelling he eases his fingers a bit but when i try easing it flies out. i have to find that balance so i dont let it off too easy.
No - it does not hurt one bit. It is pretty common yes. I guess if you did it a lot right away you could develop blisters.... but really you get used to it quickly - both your body and your technique.
@Dagg3r89 im still practicing a bit myself, and it is hard, you're right some people do just have a nack for it, but still i believe everyone has the potential for it if they set their mind to it.
@IIEnlightenedII True but the fact is this is WAY easier then actually spinning the sticks. I want to learn both but this is awesome for a quick trick as in I need to learn it for a huge show I have next week. I feel a lot safer "twirling" then spinning for the time being. Even if I could spin like a pro this technique is really easy really kewl and LOOKS GOOD! And in the long run thats all that matters. Rather impress a crowd of 200 hundred people then just 1 stuck up drummer like you.
there was many hours sitting at the back of band camp and while the horns waist my time learning there part during class, I would sit and twirl. Twirling while playing GET B33T UP Da b33t lab Dennis Stone drumming
I actually prefer to work on my drumming when I have the time. When I can play at the level of Dave Weckl or Vinnie Colaiuta I will consider learning this, which will be never.
I've been doing "the real twirl" for about 45 years and have always had contempt for "the fake twirl", but I admit what you're doing here looks sharp. You're wrong on spin versus twirl, though. I learned the fingering for "the real twirl" from... wait for it... a twirler! They twirl the baton through their fingers, but they're not called spinners.
That's a really interesting point about the baton twirlers! And of course you are correct in that really the labels are purely arbitrary anyway. I'm sure what is the case in one field is different to another - or sometimes different in a different part of the world! Regardless of what is truly "correct" or any origins though... I use the designations twirl and spin as in this video, simply because in the world of rudimental drumming when composers often write BOTH of these techniques into a piece - those definitions are the ones most commonly adhered to. SO - if you are reading a rudimental snare drum solo and see "twirl" written - most likely you should interpret that as the "fake" one. When "spin" is written, usually that baton style through the fingers thing is what's intended. This has simply become the most commonly accepted naming system in rudimental drumming over the years - whether it is right or wrong! You bring up a really good point though.
GREAT VIDEO- think about it people ...who cares if it was a "real twirl" or a "real spinner", really? the so called "fake twirl" gets it done and that is all that matters. Better to concentrate on your drumming technique and less on whether to fake twirl or real twirl or real spin or fake spin of a drum stick, geez
+T Thoy THANK you! Twirling/spinning is just icing on the top. It's just great, if you can do something that looks fancy while playing face-melting drums. If your drumming is awesome, not a single soul is gonna come up to you after a gig: "Heeeey wait a minute! That wasn't the "original" spin technique you were using!!" :D

This was by far the most understandable of all the other videos. :D

I never knew there was so much info for something so simple
Thomas Lang is AMAZING! at playing with stick tricks.
I've seen so many drummers do this, they move so quickly I could never figure out how it was done. Thank you so much for clarifying this. It's not nearly as complicated s I though.
Very cool. Will work on this. I like the way you showed how to incorporate the technique into your playing.

awsome I am gonna practice this alot before we go into the battle of the bands I think this will put into our stage performance

Glad you are finding it useful! Yep - I'm an Aussie - I live in Adelaide.
No - it does not hurt one bit. It is pretty common yes. I guess if you did it a lot right away you could develop blisters.... but really you get used to it quickly - both your body and your technique.
THIS IS THE BEST DAMN INSTRUCTION ON THIS PHENOMENON
For the people who can not get it, it just takes time and practice just like everything else. After 2-3 weeks practice you will have it :D
@Dagg3r89 im still practicing a bit myself, and it is hard, you're right some people do just have a nack for it, but still i believe everyone has the potential for it if they set their mind to it.
@percussionclinic whoa you sound new zealander. im aussie as well but from sydney

@Dagg3r89 well its just practice, if you practice the spinning believe me you'll get it down, you just gotta keep going at it.
I actually learned the "fake twirl" a couple years ago by slowing down the Afterlife music video. lol
Cool video! Thanks for sharing.
there was many hours sitting at the back of band camp and while the horns waist my time learning there part during class, I would sit and twirl. Twirling while playing GET B33T UP Da b33t lab Dennis Stone drumming
The "Fake Twirl" is the better and more real twirl, but i use both. Better to have more on hand, right?.
here i am.... twirling the sticks like a god... mere mortals... bow before meeeee
I am so getting a drum kit!!!
I don't see the response. Does he have to accept it for it appear in a box under the video?
@IIEnlightenedII I will man it's just so hard. Some people catch onto it so quickly and man I have the hardest time.
thats awesome, can't wait to learn this
It makes the top of my finger a bit raw, but i wrap my sticks in the drumstick grip tape stuff.....no more hurt
It keeps slipping out of my fingers. Goes higher and higher up until it falls off. Any suggestion?
@CyberForceGames Usually during a live show, you'd have spares. If you really wanted a technical answer :]
You'll put your eye out kid!
2:49 YOU GO LISTEN T A7X
This hurt is that normal ?
The video was great
Q : do you know what a metronome is?
A : A little short guy from the big city.
God bless Y'all.
HEY LOL, I ACTUALLY SOMETIMES GRIPPING AND PLAY LIKE HOW U DID DERE
forward is hard?... i can only spin my sticks forward... :X
@cacahut Actually 2 weeks after i posted that i mastered it. Got it down on my left hand too. Thanks for the advice though ^_^
in the thumbnail I thought he was pointing the middle finger lmao
I wouldn't use the twirling technique, it feels quite weird to play it without the index finger on the stick.
i can do it fine, but i dont seem to have the "finger strength", or whatever, to do it fast...can anyone tell me why i cant seem to do it fast?
im right handed but i can only twirl fowards with my left hand.
Wow! Thats great!
Am I the only one finding difficulties in backwards than forwards? Am I not doing it right?
Omg i thought this would be easier than spinning but I still cant do this right
youre the man, sweet accent
awesom
That was amazing
i like your video it has helped me tnx mahn

Is this the trick that the drummer does in this video " /watch?v=haeyj-aLuAE&feature=channel ", he does it quick, but close up at around 2:07
Cool man
I cant actually twirl backwards.. but i can do everything else

Ur kidding me right
do it while playing like i do!
check my vid out i worked mad hard on it
that method of holding the stick to play hurts, so I dont recommend it
@RottingxZombie lol you fail
Fake or proper, a twirl is a twirl, the haters hate everything, who fricken' cares........
lol.
terlalu banyak ngomongnya .. gak jelas !!!
