- Today I am taking you on a walking tour of the downtown area of Van Wert, Ohio (pop 10,846)
Its way up in the Northwest corner of the state surrounded by farm country. It is also the home of the 1st county library system in the USA, with a gorgeous library building to boot..... Plus a lot of really amazing houses
Awesome tour! Thank You!!
Grew up in Ohio City about 10 miles south of Van Wert, going to “town” once a week to shop and get groceries was a weekly event. Checked many books out of that library. The walk down town brought back lots of memories. That was 60+ years ago, must say my eyes got a little moist thinking about those happy innocent times. Thank you.
The small "church" next to the old courthouse is a small memorial to the men and women who lived in Van Wert and severed in the Armed Forses
THE STORY OF DUCK #16.........My oldest son Jake, my second of seven children born and raised in Van Wert, played football on the field you saw from the time he was in third grade until he graduated. (10 years) The duck you saw high on that wall is perfectly visible from the football field and was painted there long before my son ever put on a set of pads. For years my son would ask the duck for luck in tight games or situations where he thought a little luck couldn't hurt. Man did that duck deliver! Jake was the running back, he along with quarter back Nate Place, both rushed for over 1,000 yards a piece in the same season. anyone who knows high school football, (10 games) that's bringing home the bacon! In over 100 years we had never won the state championship, more over even hosted a state play off game. We have now checked both of those boxes. As I walked my son across the field for the final time on senior night, I stopped in the middle of the field and asked him if he was going to pay ohmage to the duck? I will never forget the look of sheer glee that came across his face when he realized the number...his number.... 16 had been boldly painted in the middle of THE LUCKY DUCK
Wow!! What a great story. Thank you for sharing!! 🦆
My old home town. I was born there in 1947. Moved away in mid 1950's. Still rememberthebig twn clock. Thank you for taking the time.
I lived there for 30 years. The problem with Van Wert is there is not alot of places to work there. To make decent money you have to drive to Ft. Wayne , or Lima for work, and in the winter its a nasty drive when the weather gets bad. There are a few factories to work at locally but they are all terrible places to work at, and those factories know you dont have any options so they treat the employees like crap. It is a quiet place to live with not much bad crime.
I’ll be visiting this weekend from Cincinnati
Enjoyed this and you! My family founded the library and you did it proud, thanks 🎉now, on to Toledo, another Brumback hangout (Tiedtke's)
It's a beautiful library, you should be proud of it!
Those are buckeye nuts.
Did you happen to sample any of the meth? I don't do any myself but I am told it's fantastic
I did see a lot of Pot holes and sidewalk cracks. Don't even get me started on the black tar
Had you ever been to van wert before this? You seemed to be guessing what things were and mispronouncing landmarks
I had driven through it one out two times, but that was my first time there. It looked like such an interesting small town I wanted to take an opportunity to have a look around. I'd love to go back again
Persimmons are the "nuts"
Persimmons? Really? Wow
Balyeat's is disgusting. You don't want to know what happens to food that falls on the floor
Is there a cool place I should eat next time I'm in town?
@PrinceofTurov1 to eat..or be in a historic lace eating? We go to Mi Ranchito weekly..it's dammmn good
