    Sincere thanks to Marc, George, Michaela and Ed for joining us on our September program, and allowing us to feature you in this video, to Teacher Dou, for allowing us to film your teaching and for the great insight you provided, and of course to the Shaolin Temple, for working with us to run these programs.
    Directed and produced by George Christopher Tronsrue.
    Special thanks to George again, for taking so much time during the program to get all this amazing footage, and then working just as hard when we got back, putting it together.
    And to Troy's Team, for putting George's awesome clips into this amazing package.
    Excellent job everyone. You all rock!!
    💥Please Note: Cultural Keys is no longer offering training programs at the Shaolin Temple. If you would like to train inside the temple, please contact the temple directly. They are always happy to receive foreign students!

    The one day program is about $148.
    The 7 day is about $796
    Not included in the price:
    travel to, and accommodation in, Wangzhigou {wonder how much that is from America}
    travel insurance {don't even know what that means}
    personal shopping during program (gifts, personal items, clothing etc.)
    training clothes. { Explains why the students are wearing T-shirts and tennis head bands. Instead of actual Kung Fu uniforms} Even McDojo schools give uniforms.
    Kung Fu is time and effort.
    These schools are; Time and Money.
    I would love to train at the shaolin temple, but getting there for one day or a week, from Colorado?
    Time and Money.
    It is a kind of cruelty to show this to so many people that would like to do it, but won't be able to.

      Thank you for your comment Heki. I’ll try to answer point by point so I don’t miss anything.
      1) The price of our multi-day programs include all travel between Beijing and the Shaolin Temple, all accommodation, all food, 7 hours training every day, sightseeing excursions, a full-time translator and training clothes.
      In 2016, we offered 1, 7 and 14-day programs. Our 14-day program cost $1356, which works out at $96 a day. Certainly it’s not free, but the vast majority of our participants over the past 2 years have told us that $96 a day is great value for what we offer on these programs.
      The single day programs don’t include transport or accommodation, because each individual participant will have their own requirements and preferences, and we have found it is usually better to allow them to make their own plans as they require.
      2) Travel insurance is what people buy before they travel somewhere, and covers the cost of any accidents, illnesses, losses or delays they may suffer.
      3) I’m not sure what exactly an ‘actual kung fu uniform’ is. I’ve never heard of there being a standardized uniform for people who want to learn kung fu.
      With regards to specifically what our participants, and what all students at the Shaolin Temple and other kung fu schools in China wear, from our experience training and teaching, both at the Temple and at other places in China and abroad, when you are training 7 hours a day in 30-40°C heat, covered with blood, sweat, tears and dirt, pushing your body in ways you couldn’t have imagined just a few days before, comfort is by far the most important thing you want, not some fancy uniform that only looks good in photos, but is not practical for anything else.
      4) Kung fu is an individual’s choice, an individual’s decision on how they want to train and how they want to learn. In that regard yes, it comes down to time and effort, and how much you want to put into each, to reach your goals. And how you choose to learn is as much a choice as is where you train.
      But business doesn’t work that way unfortunately, and I’ve never seen a school that teaches any martial arts for free. Every company, school and teacher, from the small corner dojo to the Shaolin Temple, has costs that need to be covered, and thus has charges they have to make.
      In the same way that you don’t need to travel to Italy to enjoy pizza, no one needs to travel to the Shaolin Temple in China to learn martial arts. There is a Shaolin Temple branch in the US, and hundreds if not thousands of kung fu schools across the country.
      There are also thousands of kung fu schools all across China, the majority of which accept foreign students, many of which are probably cheaper than training with my company. We provide what we do, at the cost that we do, because that is what people have asked for, and that is what it costs to do so.
      5) It saddens me that you find cruelty in us showing the programs we offer. We never started, nor do we run, CK Martial Hearts for the purpose of getting rich. There are far, far easier ways of making money. We do this because like you, we love martial arts, and want to provide people easier access to something they might not otherwise be able to reach.
      Yes, there will always be people who are unable to join these kinds of programs, but we hope we are doing what we can, to the best of our abilities, to keep the barriers to entry as low as possible. And as a result of the success we have seen over the past two years, in 2017 we will be able to offer more, different schools in different locations, to make it even easier for people to join. We will also be offering instruction videos on RUclips, podcast tours on our website, and history and discussion blog posts, because now we have the resources to be able to do that. If we hadn’t run a successful business, we wouldn’t be able to provide those resources for people.
      Yes, these videos can be seen as only advertisements. But these videos, our Instagram photos, our Facebook posts, they also show another life, an inside look into a life and a culture that few people have ever experienced, and hopefully provide people with insight to inspire discovery, to learn more about China, about Chinese culture, about Shaolin or about martial arts in general. If that is with our company, great. But if it is with another company or simply by themselves in whatever way is best for them, I still consider that a success.
      At the end of the day, we started Cultural Keys and CK Martial Hearts to provide access to Chinese culture to as many people as we could, in as many ways as we could. And we will continue to do that for as long as we can. We will never make everyone happy all the time. That is true for any business. But if I can help open that door for at least some people, regardless of whom, how or where, it would have been worth it.
      I hope that addresses the points you raised. I'm going to pin your question to the top of the comments, because I'm sure you raised questions that a lot of people may have. Feel free to let me know if you have any other thoughts on the subject.
      I wish you the best with your martial journey.
      Sincerely,
      AJ Donnelly

      Cultural Keys I am actually pleased that you responded that way, it shows the intent behind what you do. I suspected most of that anyway, it is just the frustration where that kind of location training from people of your awareness is out of my reach, and probably a lot of other people's.
      It is venting, because I knew you were not trying to be cruel and I saw the prices for the actual classes were really not that much, it is just getting there.
      I did go to some schools around here, but they had problems, so seeing a format like this where it is much more closer to Shaolin training, just brings up that frustration.
      But I find, the hardest discipline in training at a school, is when it isn't there. It is easy to train when someone is telling you to do it.
      Much harder when you have to go on your own initiative. When I was at the schools, people would come back to train again, and had forgotten a lot of what they learned. I am getting myself to where I can learn on my own. I have been doing it long enough to be self correcting. Thanks for the reply.

    • @CulturalKeys

      I completely understand what you are saying. It is very unfortunate that many teachers in the west claim to be teaching authentic styles, but seem to not understand what kung fu really is, either because their teachers never taught them, or because they feel they have to water down the harder aspects of training, so as to not scare students away.
      And as you said, this is in a big part because many people see martial arts as a part-time hobby, rather than a way of life. And so the market has responded in kind and provided exactly that, the so called McDojo.
      But that is again part of why we do what we do. Every day, posting videos and photos of training at Shaolin, to show people what authentic, traditional martial arts look like, we hopefully inspire people to look for, and demand, the real thing, no matter where they are. In time, slowly but surely, we hope that schools like ours can influence the martial arts landscape, even if it’s just one person at a time. ^_^
      As for self-discipline, yes, that is most definitely the 100% biggest challenge, school or no school. As you correctly said, kung fu is time + effort, and making the effort to find sources of information, and push yourself to train when you have no formal class or teacher, is a huge challenge, in the same way that making the effort to practice outside of class, to study deeper and wider in your own time when you do have a class, is also the biggest challenge for many people.
      I teach all my students that the most important aspect of training is always intent; to know what you intend to achieve with each and every move you make. It is also a question on our application forms, so that I know why people want to study at Shaolin, and hope I can help them achieve that. Personally, it is a daily ritual for me to look at what I want to achieve that day in my training and in my company, and put everything in to doing so. If I don’t put enough effort in to achieve that thing, I know it wasn’t what I wanted in the first place, and go back to looking at my intentions and seeing what needs to change.
      In any case, I sincerely wish you the best in your quest. You seem like a very passionate martial artist, and I hope in 2017 you can find the best ways possible to achieve your goals.
      Yours in martial spirit,
      AJ

    @S C,
    A few weeks ago you left a comment on this video. I apologise for not replying sooner, but we were at the temple, so had no opportunity to.
    Regardless, I came here to reply, but cannot find the comment now, so instead left this comment, which you will hopefully see at some point. When you said "you can join the US military for free and receive 3 months training that will do you much better than this garbage", what exactly were you referring to? These are cultural immersion programs at the Shaolin Temple, so I'm not sure how they can be compared to military training, but if people came to us, expecting that same kind of training, then yes, perhaps they would be disappointed. However, I think perhaps you have misunderstood what we teach, and what the purpose is of the courses we offer. Training at the temple with Cultural Keys involves spending your days inside the temple, training with the monks in traditional Shaolin methods, to experience the culture of both the temple, Zen Buddhism and China as a whole. Through this process, people have been able to get a better understanding of China, of kung fu and of themselves as well.
    Over the past 4 years we have taken almost 100 people to study a the temple, and so far, no one has accused us of scamming them, or defrauding them in any way. Please, if you feel something we have said in our videos is untrue, or is in any way scamming people, please let me know, and we will address your concerns directly. Feel free to either reply directly to this comment, or email me at ajdonnelly@culturalkeys.cn, and I'll be happy to talk more with you.

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the question MrBeMinecraft! The Shaolin Temple in Henan (North Shaolin) is the 'original' Shaolin Temple. I say 'original', because it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, but the site where the temple currently sits is considered the location where it was originally built, and many of the still standing towers and works of art in the temple (the stelle) are considered originals which date back at least 1000 years. The Henan Shaolin Temple location is also recognised as the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, and where the styles we identify as Shaolin martial arts started (though what exactly constitutes Shaolin martial arts is often debated.) The Shaolin Temple in Yunnan is a temple which while itself is extremely old, was not actually a Shaolin Temple originally. In recent times, the Henan Shaolin Temple has been working with local governments to take over management of smaller temples, and rename them Shaolin, to help maintain them and promote the Shaolin name. Hope that helps! ^_^

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  7 лет назад +3

      Hi Brendan, thanks for the question. Actually, one of the best things about these programs is that they can be enjoyed by participants of any level. Over the years, we have had black belt and beginners in the same group, with neither finding any disadvantages.
      This is the kind of program where it's all about the individual, even in a group of 5 or 6, because whilst we definitely push participants, no one is forced to do anything they feel unable to. The groups are small, so the teachers, myself included, are able to give each student enough attention, either helping where necessary, or adding extra layers of difficulty to activities when things are too easy.
      At the end of the day, on our courses participants are able to get out as much as they put in, which is something everyone has appreciated. You can get an idea of other people's experiences by reading their reviews on our Tripadvisor page here: ckys.info/CKMHTripAdvisor Of course, just let me know if you have any other questions.

      In 2017 we are offering two programs, a 1 week and a 2 week, in both May and September. In general, a 2 week program (training 7 hours a day) is a great way to kick start your body to getting back into shape, and also as an introduction to Shaolin kung fu and culture. The path you take from there is up to the individual, but participants have often gone on to continue with Shaolin or taichi classes at home, feeling they benefited a lot from the introductory experience at the Temple. :)

      Thanks for leaving a comment Nassem!
      Yes, you are right in that Yang Style taichi is not a traditional style of the Shaolin Temple. But the history of the temple is as a school of exchange and learning, where many different styles and schools converaged to learn from each other; as you know, that's where most styles of Shaolin come from. So it shouldn’t be considered that ahborant that other styles are taught there.
      As for whether starting the day with taichi is traditionally how the monks would do it, then no, it's not. But 'traditionally' students at the temple wouldn't stay in nice hotels or get to the temple by bus! I'm not trying to be facetious, but merely say that to enhance the experience for short term students at the temple, many of whom have no martial arts experience, we have introduced some elements to help them get more out of their time spent there, and to help with the otherwise very intense training schedule that they follow throughout the day, for which morning taichi is very useful.
      So that’s why we have traditional Yang Style taichi in the morning. I hope that addresses your observation about the program. If not, please feel free to reply. I’m more that happy to talk to anyone who has any comments or feedback about the program. :)

You can contact the temple directly for more information through their website at shaolin.org.cn. The only Shaolin style I know of are the 5 animals. A second question, does the Shaolin Temple branch in America teach the same styles as the one in China? Thanks very much for answering! By the way I'll be starting Kung Fu very soon, its a northern mantis system and I'm very excited

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the question Incubus! The Shaolin Temple teachers a very wide range of styles, both those that are considered traditionally 'Shaolin' in origin, as well as numerous other styles that have been brought into the temple by both long and short term residents there. Really, you could study almost any style at the temple, depending on who is available to teach. Some people consider this a terrible thing, and that some styles shouldn't be taught/available because they aren't 'genuine' Shaolin styles. But I certainly don't agree, and think the more styles that are incorporated into what the temple has to offer, the better. That is how the temple started its martial traditions in the first place, welcoming and exchanging information on all styles of kung fu, so there is no reason it shouldn't be like that now!
      As to your second question, the various branches of the Shaolin Temple around the world will offer a similar selection to the temple itself, but most definitely a smaller number, and more likely from the 'traditional' styles such as Hongquan and Tongbiquan. I would also imagine these will be taught in a western manner, such as with belts and gradings, but I've never been to one of the international schools, so couldn't give you a 100% accurate answer on that.
      In any case, good luck with your journey! Hope we meet somewhere down the path! ^_^

    Wow, you train so hard. I practice Kung fu eagle claw, but it's twice a week, 1 hour and a half every class. It's still very far from 7 hours a day, but it's all I can afford, hehe. I wish I could pass some months training in these temples.

      Remember, it's not what you do in class that helps you master a style, it's everything you do before and after class that counts! It's the same as going to the gym! You don't build muscle when you are actually working out, but during the times you're NOT in the gym! Keep up the good work, keep finding time to train, and best of luck with your continuing martial journey! :)

      +Pra V Een The true meaning of kung fu is the attainment of something through continued hardwork and dedication. That is something you can practice yourself, any time, anywhere.
      But if you are asking about Shaolin Martial Arts specifically, the forms and stances can initially be learnt from books or videos, if there are no community classes in your area. Start your journey in this way, then when the time is right, you can find a school or teacher. :)

      Certainly. When you go to the temple directly, before you arrive they will ask you what you want to learn, and can make a plan for you, based on how long you will stay. Hi Benson, thanks for your comment! Actually, while many schools use the name 'Shaolin Temple', there are in fact only two official Shaolin Temples - one in the south of China and one in the north, in Henan, which is where we run our kung fu programs. If you are looking to do a long term program, you can contact the temples directly through their websites for more information. As for the cost, that will depend what you wanted to learn there, and what else you needed included i.e food, accommodation etc. But again, the temples will be able to give you more information on long term study. Best of luck with your martial journey! :)

      Hi Raffaela, thanks for your question. :)
      All participants on a program are taught the same thing, the same jibengong (foundations) the same techniques, the same form, regardless of gender, age etc. How much effort each person puts into their training, how each person interprets the meaning of kung fu, is obviously up to the individual. But there is no difference in the opportunity that is given to each person; no difference in the practice that each person experiences. The only difference will be in the effort made, and expectations, of each person. ^_^

However, we do agree that for a true understanding of the essence of Shaolin martial arts, some degree of combat training is necessary. As such, when training at the temple with CK Martial arts, all participants do learn combat applications of the forms they are taught, as well as taking several sanda (Chinese fighting) classes at the nearby Tagou Martial Arts Academy, where the teachers teach modern sanda which is based on a combination of traditional Shaolin techniques and modern western fighting styles. Hi there. Thanks for your question. :) If you want to study long-term, you need to contact the temple direct. How much it costs depends on what you want to study, how you want to study and a variety of other factors. You can contact the temple directly for more information through their website at shaolin.org.cn. A few of the teachers speak basic English, but most don't, so either start learning before you go, or just pick it up when you arrive, which you will do very fast. Best of luck!

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  6 лет назад

      Anyone can study Shaolin concepts and martial arts. However, to become an ordained monk takes years and years of dedicated study and practice. It also requires another monk at the temple (either warrior or religious) to second you, again an honor that is not easily earned. However, if you have the time, passion and energy to dedicate yourself to such a path, there is no reason why you can't succeed. ^_^

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  8 лет назад

      +Prasenjit Sonowal Thanks for the comment Prasenjit, it's a very valid question!
      In short, yes, I wholeheartedly believe the opportunities we offer at the Shaolin Temple is enough to impart at least a taste of the life and culture of Chinese kung fu! But as with everything, it's also about how much each individual is willing to put into the experience, that determines how much they can get out of it.
      Everyone who has joined our Shaolin Temple Experiences so far, has done so for very different reasons. Specifically with regards to kung fu though, and whether our 7 or 14 (or one-month in September) programs are going to be enough to give a good basis, is really down to the individual.
      However, we do consider our programs very immersive. Training 7-hours a day every day in an environment such as the Shaolin Temple, and living in the 'kung fu village' Wangzhigou, even for just one week, has been a life changing experience for everyone who has taken part in our programs so far. You can see what other people have thought about the experience on our TripAdvisor page:
      www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g661421-d7854381-Reviews-CK_Martial_Hearts-Dengfeng_Henan.html
      Of course, you can only experience so much in one week, or even one month. But I do believe that what people get to see and to do on these programs is enough to spark a greater interest. And it is our hope that those experiences will encourage people to continue exploring the culture and kung fu of Shaolin once they return home, which is obviously a lifetime commitment, and is the main reason we do this.
      I hope that answers your question Prasenjit. If not, feel free to let me know. ^_^

    are the masters very strict???

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Prakhar, thanks for your question! Actually, it depends which master is teaching you. While some are really very strict, and will expect the same level of discipline and dedication that they themselves display in their training, others are more relaxed in their teaching style and will give time for new arrivals to adjust to life at the temple. It really depends a lot on their own experiences and previous training methods, together with if they believe you are serious about training at the temple. Often, if your teacher sees that you are not giving 100% effort, they will not be as willing to take the time and effort to train you 100%. But the more effort you put in, the more willing you are to do whatever it takes to excel and develop your kung fu, the more willing they are the push you harder and share more. Of course, the masters can only show you the skills. It's how hard and what you train by yourself that will determine how far you go on this path. It's a cliche, but still very true to say that obvious;y, the more you put in, the more you get out. Hope that answers your question!

      Thanks for your question Mattyjack! In answer, no, you don't have to cut your hair. While many long-term international students at the temple choose to follow the Buddhist tradition of shaving their heads, it's not a requirement for people who choose to train their. ^_^

      Hi there. Thanks for the question! Over the last 2 years, 80% of our participants had never tried any kind of martial art before, in fact, most of them had never made a fist! But it really didn't matter, and they all got as much, if not more, out of the program as our very experienced martial artists. For many people, it's about trying a new and interesting culture, and experiencing kung fu at the Shaolin Temple is certainly both of those things! ^_^

      @CulturalKeys  5 лет назад

      Hi Yogesh, thanks for the question. Unfortunately, it's not such a simple one to answer! There are many, many factors involved, such as how often you train, how many hours each time, the training method you choose, the style you study, what your reason for training is and what you consider a master to be. True martial arts don't think of it in terms of a final destination/result/mastery, more than a journey. It's a cliche perhaps, but the journey is infinitely more important than the destination. As for training at the Shaolin Temple, if you would like to study there long term, it would be better to contact them directly. Their website is shaolin.org.cn. Best of luck with your quest!

      Thanks for your question, Jason. Currently, CK Martial Hearts only offers short term programs, studying inside the Shaolin Temple with the warrior monks. However, if you wished to study there long term, say several years, that is possible. The cost would depend on several factors, including the length of time you stay there, and what you'd like to study. Your best bet is to contact the temple directly, via their website. They will be able to give you the exact price and further details. ^_^

    how to learn kung-fu for defanice

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  7 лет назад

      Kung fu itself isn't a technique or style; it's an attitude and method, and an actual skill you can develop, in and through the training that you do. Personally, I think it is more correct to say you need to have kung fu, in order to use your martial arts for self-defence. But obviously, that's not enough. You also need to train your style until it is instinctive, and make sure you practice it against realistic opponents.
      That's where you need to start if you want to be able to actually use your martial arts. :)

    • @CulturalKeys
      @CulturalKeys  6 лет назад

      Thanks for your message Tyler. Your thoughts are appreciated, and I completely understand where you are coming from. Sparring is definitely a necessary part of any complete training program. However, given the limited length of time we have to train at the temple during these courses, the fact that participants always come from broad range of skill level and backgrounds, and that fighting is a part, but not the exact focus of the training we offer at the temple, the decision was made to not include sparring on these programs.
      We do include daily drill and application training, as well as sanda training at the Tagou Martial Arts Academy. Of course, if someone is specifically looking for fight training only, this may not be the most suitable program to join. But I think we do try to provide as balanced a course as possible for those who are looking to experience as much as possible in the limited time they have at the temple. ^_^

Those prices include travelbetween Beijing and Shaolin, all accommodation, all food, all training and a set of robes to train in. Thank you for your question Jatin. CK Martial Hearts runs these programs at the official Shaolin Temple in Henan, China throughout the year, with our next one, and last of 2016, beginning on October 16th.
      More information can be found on our website www.ckmartialhearts.com.
      Alternatively, you can see if there are any Shaolin Kung Fu schools in your local area. Enquire to see which ones are teaching traditional forms and techniques, like the ones seen in this video. Shaolin is a very popular style, so hopefully it shouldn’t be too hard to find something like this near you. ^_^
