    Instead of Arena-style set resources, I would give the option to reclaim the resources from your sunk ship at either the shipwright or another stand. This means resources such as cursed cannonballs don't need to be locked out of the mode, and regular adventure supplying is still valuable.
    You might question the possibility of boarders taking your resources, to which I respond that that'd still be a problem if you won the fight and didn't have to rebuy in the first place.

      They can make it where we all get same supplies but in the battle of the battle arena thing, there is a ship like the one in arena and in that ship there is a bunch of good supps such as wraith balls, pineapples, cursed cannon balls etc, that will encourage hand to hand combat and also make us enjoy all elements of this game, as we can fight with cursed balls, wraith balls etc while having fair fights that are fully determined on skill and not on amount of resources you have.

      I agree that it's best if supply barrels floated upwards along with the loot, maybe have them hold only a fraction of their contents while the ship was afloat, but the solution (the concept) to the supply issue is basically already in the game and it's been there since day 1.

    • @theknivesareout8053

      I think the best way is that when you sink you keep your supplies except you lose 25% from every barrel. In which that 25% floats to the surface for the opponent to scoop up and collect. That way people don’t lose a tonne of supps on a win or loss style mode but the victor still gets a slice of cake with the 25% from you ship.

    I feel I should add that the way blunderbombs behave when you fire them out of cannons is actually pretty counter-intuitive. For firebombs and pirates, the cannon essentially just lets you throw them further. But, for blunderbombs, it changes the radius, the knockback, the damage... Why?

    • @Western-mc8dg

    • @geyrnauch
      @geyrnauch Год назад +11

      I don't know man, I tried to think about it myself from some science perspective.
      Maybe the Blunderbomb is constructed such that it is a two reactant explosive, that when a divider inside is shattered (similar to the construction of the firebomb, as it appears to have a flame encased in some sort of flammable fluid), it explodes and the pellets inside damage pirates and ships as shrapnel. Perhaps the higher velocity of a cannon firing it out causes the Blunderbomb to explode more violently due to faster shattering of the internal core that separates the two reactants and mixing them quicker, effectively creating a better high explosive, therefore throwing shrapnel harder (higher damage), and increasing the TNT equivalent mass inside causing the shockwave to be more powerful, increasing knockback and increasing the effective radius.
      That would probably explain all three of those, but it's a video game, so logic doesn't really apply.

    My biggest issue is a small one: If you get sunk because you left the barrier, you get no rep at all. This means that if someone boards you and camps you enough (especially if you're solo) they can just drive you out of bounds and you get nothing for it. They get no extra benefits for doing this, it just takes away your reward, which feels kind of unfair to me, since I'm mostly a solo player (and I'm not very good at it either)

    • @DuskEalain
      @DuskEalain Год назад +4

      tbh I think the easiest way of fixing this is by simply doing a check to see if the out of bounds ship's players are on the Ferry of the Damned or not.
      Obviously if they gave rewards for going out of bounds people would just queue and then run away, but the "board, camp, drive out of bounds" strat _IS_ a viable one especially in solo PVP, so having a way of making it clear that was done as the other crew's _win condition_ rather than you running way would be a really nice addition.

    • @Daxmacloi
      @Daxmacloi Год назад

      @@DuskEalain That would not work in some cases were the player owning the out of bounds' ship respawn at it, or can't reach the helm in time. And since other crews can join the battle they could drive out of bounds the enemy ship if they please, so checking for the position of every player involved in the conflict would not result in a situation easily solvable.
      The best way to counter this is to defend your ship from boarders. There are multiple ways of winning a match, so you will not lose every single time to this strat.

    Best way to fix the supplies issue is to make the cannonball barrel of the enemy's ship part of the flotsam that floats up after you defeat it. Regardless of the enemies supplies, there should be a bare minimun of at least 150 cannonballs and 25 or so coconuts +30 planks 2 get u ready for the next fight (varies depending on ship size).

    • @HonestAuntyElle
      @HonestAuntyElle Год назад +1

      They don't need to fix the issue completely, they just need to make it frustratingly difficult. If they added a random cooldown between 1-2 minutes between crews joining a cold server, it would completely FUCK their ability to spike servers, and would have to recruit ships to the alliance the old fashioned way. They would still be able to hold on to the alliance once they got it though, but then all you need to do is make sure EVERY SoT server reboots at least once every 24h for maintenance , and merges people away forcibly, alliances be damned.
      These 2 things combined would make operating an alliance fleet tedious and not fun to the point that no one would volunteer their time to setting them up. Meaning the only alliance fleets left would be people who have automated/scripted the whole thing, and therefore seriously violating the xbox live ToS, meaning you could legitimately ban them.

    I think preserving resources when you are sinking would actually be better for gameplay loop. There is a thing related to capitancy. If you sink in this pvp mode, there is no need to pay for repairing your ship for next game. It might be a solution for supplies. If you sink in pvp, you maintain your resources. Winner should not worry about you, since the one who lost is already merged to other server. And, you can just simply jump into next fight without loosing time. I had to stop playing only because I did not want to spent next 1-2 hours farming sea forts for food and cannonballs. Admittedly i’d be fine if blunder and firebombs were kept to throwables as they are in glass containers. That being said, i’d then want to see something like a grapeshot that is the equivalent of flintlock rounds impacting a ship. Does the small form of hull damage, but can be devastating to a crew. To counter this versatility they could have a literal “falloff” when firing, with the further range taking away more of its accuracy. Would encourage close broadsides, better chances for boarding, and focus on whether you go to try to cripple the enemy crew with the grapeshot or fire upon the ship’s segments to leave them dead in the water.

    Before I go into this I should mention I exclusively play sloop and mostly play solo. I also play on Xbox servers. I would have to disagree with just about everything you said, except for the alliance server stuff and matchmaking.
    For starters yes, we survived for two years without blunderbombs. We also survived for months or years without dynamic ship damage, harpoons, cursed cannonballs, chain shots, and firebombs. However, all of these additions made ship combat more in depth and fun. Blundeebombs just add one more layer of strategy. There may need to be a change, but not letting you fire them is not it. It sets back the evolution of pvp years and takes away depth and strategy, which is never a good thing.
    I don’t really think a lack of supplies is much of a problem. Sure, if you do your stocking before you set sail, and then you sink, that sucks. You can however stock up a little before every fight instead of once at the beginning of the session. Also, giving you free supplies in your barrels ruins the immersion and seamlessness into adventure that makes this update so great. An easy fix would just be barrels that float up when you win that have supplies in them. If you lose just by supplies from the outpost for one battle.
    I play sloop, and I don’t see running as a huge problem. You can’t run forever, eventually you have to turn. The solution, as much as I hate to say it, is just get good. When a ship turns you have a multitude of opportunities to immobilize them or board. Running shouldn’t be an issue, as long as you just have patience.
    Great video and great channel. I’m subbed and love the content, but I really disagree on this one.

While a few can be short 5-10 minute fights, the majority of my battles have been long range supply wars that drag on for over an hour, with the winner typically having more wood. In Sea of Thieves the setup of the ships has to change. The sloop, i.e. the one-master, should ONLY be intended for one player and not for two. The two-master should be for two to three players, and the three-master for three to four players.
    This is the most important change they need to bring in because as a solo player you are ALWAYS at a disadvantage especially in PvP elements. Four hands can always act faster than two. So one shoots, the other steers or repairs, or boards your ship. The Sloop should therefore be a single player ship because of the advantages this ship brings and the disadvantages of not having a crew.
    But we're talking about a game company that certainly doesn't pride itself on designing a game for single players. I've got several hours behind me now, and the more I PvP in SoT, the more I'm bothered by the fact that I've been crushed by a two-man sloop again.
    I love PvP in games because you can always get an advantage with better moves. But in SoT, that's where the problem lies. If it's a one vs one then it's fair and equal and everyone has equal odds and the better one wins. A one vs two but on the same ship type always puts you at a disadvantage. Sure, if you win against two players, then you have a bigger win. But that's exactly where the problem lies: you go into the fight with a negative account from the start.
    The fact that a game manufacturer can't see something like that, or doesn't want to, shows how incompetent Rare is.

    Honestly, as much as it sounds like copium, they should remove the ability to spawn camp in matchmaking. With the unreliability of the game matching you with players of the same skill level, you can go into a battle with 0 wins and 5 losses and end up fighting a crew of absolutely insane doublee gunners who do nothing but board and stop you from being able to break the spawn camp.

    I’ve done alliance in PvP but legit because I royally suck at PvP. You don’t learn anything when you sink in 5 seconds, as I often do. Even allying, I do not possess a faction level higher than 3.
    Furthermore, I enjoy Sea of Thieves but there’s an IMMENSE anxiety when I am approached by other players. Frequently they are highly aggressive players who seem to find no joy in life other than ruining someone else’s. Often with astounding toxicity win or lose. I want to be capable enough that when a ship attacks me, I feel a reasonable confidence I might win and this not panic. As mentioned before, I am frequently sunk within seconds of combat. PvP as it stands ruins the game for me, and considering there’s way more non PvP content than PvP, I feel justified. However, it’s a fact that betrayal and attacks are part of the nature of the beast so I need to adapt. Season 8 has been great in getting most of the worst offenders off the server and killing each other, but it also offers up a chance for me to shore up my weaknesses against PvP and to be able to engage with the game as it is as a fully enjoyable experience. To that end, learning to improve my skills through the use of alliances is one I will take without shame. I look forward to a time when I will no longer need them.

    With the blunder bomb issue, I always advocate for addition over subtraction - especially when the subtraction is based on an edge case; the alternative I'd suggest is to add a crouch or brace action that mitigates the effect of knockbacks. It still gives power to the blunder bomb, and requires some skill to notice one has been fired at you. Overall I think the ability to crouch would also 'improve' the game in other areas and allow for more sneaking and pvp jukes in general.

And it can be a little bit of a pain sometimes as rare keeps track of the things you buy on outposts so for example, I buy a storage create, cannon etc and sail off, gather loot at a fort and then start the hourglass and dive to find a match. Even though Win/Lose puts you in another server, if its at the exact same outpost that you got earlier, it still locks you out of buying those supplies for awhile, so you go sail to another. Can be quite demoralizing having to drag throughout something again and again and sometimes people just don't have that time to spare

When trying to matchmake back to back, I always end up dropping grade 5 flags to save up time instead of going to Reaper’s or an outpost depending on the faction. It is a lot of gold and commendations that I waste just to be quick.
    Adding up to he supply solutions the other ones said, it would be cool that instead of spawning on a random island after sinking, you do it on an outpost, so you can buy them. And if you win a battle, the ship’s supplies should be claimable, because the only way to get supplies with constant fighting is to bully people with spawn camping and using a storage crate.

    The duality of the blunder is that spamming them against the canon line is not skilled gameplay and quite cheesy, but at the same time the blunder is the only thing other than a rigging ball that effectively stops people from catching mast when you chain. You could argue that cannons can get this done, but this is not easy at all to do even at medium distance. You could argue that making blunderbombs only a throwable means u can just send a border when you hit chains to throw blunders from the water, but then what happens to solo slooping? I can just imagine it just becomes a test of whoever gets headshot by a cannon first (which it already pretty much is).

    Honestly just buffing the amount of supplies you can purchase would be nice to make the supplying times less obnoxious. Treat it like this: As you progress through the new PVP on demand system thing, it'll unlock the ability to purchase bulk supplies. There's a small, medium, and large supply you can buy from the shipwright, each unlocked by getting to a certain point in the level you are for the matchmaking system. The small ones are basically what we have now, cheap with a small boost in supplies. The medium ones would cost more, but they'd give you a much more considerable amount of supplies. And the large ones are going to cost quite a bit, but they'll be a much more significant amount of supplies given to you. That way as you play and rack up more W's, you get rewarded for it, as well as giving 400 million gold Gary over there something to dip his gold cursed hands into

    They kinda did this to themselves with alliance servers. People want a way to play with just their group, and if you don't give them a way, a pack of groups will come together, and make their own way to play without having to pvp.
    You can say "this is the nature of the game!" well, going against the nature of what the player wants, they will find a way to make it work for them.
    PvPing alliance faction servers are gross tho. A way to fix that would be to merge both ships to different sessions after the fight.
    pulling someone out of an alliance server breaks the entire fucking thing, so boom, it'll solve that issue. No server would want to spike after EVERY SINGLE FIGHT. It takes long enough as is.
    I've asked several Alliance players, if they had a subscription to make your own session, with your own boats, would you pay for it, and almost every one I've talked to said yes.
    The model is already there with Fallout 1st which some 76 players have and enjoy. THAT would also nip alliance servers in the butt. Well AShinyRay, I have to say I disagree with some of your desired changes, but agree with others.
    1) Blunderbombs:
    are the great equalizer for newbies/casuals against pro-player double-gunning sweat lords! And even though they can be spammy, they don't make holes in a ship, break masts, or otherwise ruin one's ability to fight... In fact, if they spam them, I actually call for everyone to just stay off cannons. They're a useful tool, but one not to be used lightly before you really need them. Because both sides have access to it and the mechanics surrounding it haven't changed from the Adventure experience, there's not much an issue to me on that. Sloop's changes to not get knocked off as easily are fine too and shouldn't be touched in the coming reworks to the on-demand battle experience. The AoE is probably strong, but the whole purpose of the shot is meant to sink a ship which has holes unrepaired and drain food for easier kills with fire and cannonshot. We see what happens between fairly evenly matched ships who can't sink, but a few well placed blunderbombs turns that tide. And since not everyone is a boarding maniac, they need to stay as cannonable shot.
    2) Supplying:
    is a factor of adventure. What Rare ought to do is get barrels' amounts up again and barrel restock timers reduced. And if you had an invasion, allow you to resupply at an outpost you've been to OR spawned at. Since invasions happen suddenly and matchmakers want to get out there faster... More supplies per barrel, per island. It still takes a player to get them, it doesn't magically get on your ship. This hasn't been a complaint that went off quietly before, and my own suggestion of supply crates for purchase and for draining/filling barrels did come in handy to speed up the rate at which a ship supplies itself. The point is to be prepared and constantly prepare. - I often saw many ships just quick sail without supplying, and while they were a bit easier to fight, it wasn't an instant win, seeing as they can board and grab your tools of the trade to fight you with.
    I would NEVER want an even, fair fight. Its pirate-time and we fight dirty. No arena style same number of resources!~ YAR!
    Rare just needs to stop having these "Check your balance" UI timers for purchases. Just give us the darn things already! No other online game I play does this. Or takes my time with as many clicks and "Okay, you got your stuff!" UI that I have to close!!! RAAAAHH!!!~
    3) Battle Bounds:
    Some have suggested timed decreases to size for lengthier battles. Either 30 or 60 minutes. Just to help encourage the intensity of a fight for its conclusion. SoT battles are not short all the time, but the longest ones need help... That's all that should change.
    4) Matchmaking:
    I agree, it would be nice to matchmake a bit differently so you're not sitting around endlessly. Specifically, keep sailing while waiting for a match AND then get a quick alarm to get back into place to prep for their invasion. Like a "Ready Up" state before diving for an invasion.
    5) Alliance Servers:
    I will submit that alliance servers and Discord Spiking or takeovers do need to be addressed somehow. Though in my experience on the seas so far with this update (albeit limited) wherein I did make an alliance while sailing for the flame, it was completely organic and my allies all died when I got invaded then *they* got invaded too at the same time. I have not personally seen alliances straight up win in this case. But these occasions are something of an outlier that can prove strong evidence to the better crew actually tackling things. And they have to remember too, if one of those ships goes down with an active hourglass, they permanently lost that ally until they locate and convince a crew to let their buds back in. - Rare has some options, but none are easily implemented in this case. The problem is largely player-oriented, not game-oriented, so fixing that comes with a cost somewhere.

Not to mention you're pretty damn good for a controller player. Respect.

  • @ActuallyEric
    @ActuallyEric Год назад

    So here's my take on some of the issues brought up.
    1) Blunderbombs - Rather than make them unusable in cannons entirely, maybe work down to that in stages after some playtesting. I would suggest increasing the loading time of blunderbombs by about 25% and I'm going to also suggest something that Left 4 Dead 2 implemented in regards to melee spam. In that game, after 5 repeated melee attacks, an increasing cooldown timer got implemented ranging from 0.5 seconds all the way up to 2.5 seconds if I remember correctly. In Sea of Thieves, repeated blunderbombs shot from a cannon would incur a cooldown that gets longer and longer the more they are repeatedly loaded. This way, the tool itself isn't changed, just the way in we we use the tool.
    2) Supplies - I am against changing the supply situation in the sense of having instanced supplies specifically for the battles. And it's for the reason you bring up. That is, it's more Arena-like. In Arena, your ship sinking wasn't necessarily the end of the fight. The primary goal wasn't to sink others, it was to put points on a leaderboard before time ran out. To that end, having a well stocked ship was essential to quickly get you back into the fight of that rigidly-timed competition. My suggestion of a solution for the Season 8 PvP is a little more ambitious.
    Expand the Seaposts. Add a shipwright to them that offers supplies for sale, perhaps even supply crates for sale, and throw an extra 8 to 10 barrels on them. Make them almost like mini-outposts. Seaposts already have bounty boards, like outposts and spawning back in at a place with a shipwright just seems...right to me. So for those who've just suffered a loss can quickly purchase more supplies and hopefully get back into the fight faster. This would hopefully also help with the matchmaking times. I would also suggest after a loss you ALWAYS spawn back in at either an Outpost or Seapost.
    Obviously these ideas would need tweaking and iterations and testing, but I think these are much more in line with the spirit of the PvP mechanic that was made to take place in the Adventure mode.
    Would love to hear your feedback on these suggestions.

    I agree with everything you said and I will add two points. 1) If they make a set supplies for every battle, there will be more people going into matchmaking so maybe rare doesn't need to give more information about the status of the queue, because you will be finding faster matches. 2) Alliances camping invading ships is something that should be allowed, it's annoying but people should be able to rat victories. But, alliances should be able to invade other alliances too. That alone would be epic af. Furthermore, battles with unbalanced number of ships should get buffs or nerfs to their stats or supplies. And, for every ship taken down, the hourglass should have it's value incremented.

    I'm a little late to the party, but for me, the three most things that hurt this season for me are:
    - The distinct lack of Reaper's Bones cosmetics compared to Athena's Fortune. It feels like Rare put 90% of their cosmetic development on Athena's Fortune.
    - Blunderbombs. I am sick and tired of running into trash talking asshats that think they're hot shit, when they spammed blunderbombs endlessly, or as soon as I even began to hit them 2-3 times. It's very apparent who would be greatly effected by a blunderbomb nerf. For some, it's a MASSIVE crutch and it's just straight up annoying.
    - Matchmaking Times. I am sick and tired of sitting in the tunnel for an endless period of time, even during what should be considered "prime time". SBMM is not good for this game. I don't care who I fight. I don't want to sit in the tunnel for half an hour. Getting consistent fights has been a struggle and has been few and far between.

    I think the blunder bombs should remain shootable from cannons - but they should function much closer to how they do when thrown, ie: nerf only the cannon-version. Since the thrown ones don't knock ships the same way, and I'm pretty sure the cannon-shot ones also get a bigger AoE. Make the canon version closer to the thrown one (or even just matching it entirely with no added effects/changes), with a smaller aoe than it currently has and less impact.
    Also, I think the first bit of the out-of-bounds area should probably remain pretty soft, but ramp up much more quickly. The main issue is that it can be difficult to tell where the boundary is currently, so I think of the first area as sort of like the way the ground changes near the edge of a baseball field, so people can tell they're running out of space before they hit a wall that they can't see. It would maybe be neat if Rare could put some clear visual effects around the ring of the arena - at least visible to the two ships involved. If they did that I'd support making crossing the line small amounts much more punishing.
    We could also maybe support different arena sizes for different ship classes. With sloops getting slightly smaller arenas. The other potential solution I liked to help curb the "running away forever" was a shrinking arena, but not like you're imagining. Not a battle-royale style where the arena eventually closes up. Instead, just once or twice, after a couple of minutes each, the arena shrinks by like 10-15%, that's it. And after the shrink it doesn't change again afterwards. So if fights do go on for a long time it'll make it easier to reach an end at least.
    laaastly - I absolutely agree to wishing nothing but bananas onto the alliance ambush players, and Rare /should/ definitely change things, such as making it so you can't faction up while already in an alliance. (though this doesn't actually fix the real problem. Ships could still work together to ambush without being an official alliance) - maybe instead making it so defenders won't get invaded if they're near another ship (and also blocking alliances still too). BUT, this is Rare's fault and Rare's problem. I don't want to be on the receiving end of an alliance ambush, but I do not support banning/punishing players for optimizing the game with the tools that the game itself gives them. Blame the devs, not the players, imo.

    The only issue I have with the season is how grueling the grind for the new curses is. Not everyone enjoys pvp, and the fact the 2 most requested curses are locked behind a pvp mode sucks. Rare needs to lower the grind

  • @War450
    @War450 Год назад

    Rather than give ships arena-style supplies, all Rare has to do is make it so you don't lose your supplies when sunk in pvp. You'd obviously still lose supplies when sunk normally. But when you lose a pvp match you should keep your supplies. As that's the real issue here. It's losing your supplies after a loss. Taking time to supply up is part of adventure mode, and this pvp is still part of adventure mode, it isn't arena. So long as they don't take our supplies after every single loss we can continue to queue up until we've exhausted our supplies through combat, then take a break to resupply and then get back into the fight.

  • @LegacyCatalyst

    I think the issue is that the matchmaking is based on percentages. A swabbie team who has won 1 match has a win rate of 100%. However, an actually good galleon crew that’s won 19 matches and lost 1 has a win rate of 95%. So those two crews are matched against each other.
    The issue is that they aren’t counting the amount of wins, they’re just contributing to a percentage. So it’s a bad early solution, but as time goes on it will get better. They need to change it now though, because now is the early game so it will not work correctly.

    I have a different idea, that can even be logically explained. What if loading blunder bombs and fire bombs was, let's say 50% slower than loading cannons. In that case if you hit the enemy crew while they are loading blunders you have more of a chance to stop them and the explanation is simple. Blunder bombs and fire bombs are made of glass so they need to be loaded more carefully.

    But having done some solo slooping; the mode desperately needs a way to settle stale mates.
    Perhaps making everything do more damage after a certain amount of time (a sort of sudden death situation). Or spawning in loot like; wraith balls or kegs.
    Also maybe make alliances a part of the mode. Like if there are multiple people of the same side within the bounds, the attacker will spawn in with another queuing ship (similar to dark sould). Could be a fun thing to see every now and then.
