- This is a brief video showing what to do if your damper gear pops out while removing the glove box door. The gear or cog, can pop out while pulling the damper arm out. This little plastic gear can be easily put back into place with your finger. Be careful not to pull the damper arm out too fast, because the gear can fly out pretty quickly. You can also try to hold the gear in its place while pulling the damper arm out.
Don't panic, he says. Thanks for the emotional support - and the solution
Haha, you're welcome.
My guy!!!! You're a absolute legend. I thought I broke it. Thank you kind Sir!!
You're welcome!
Thank you for the comment!
Thank you so much! Didn't even realize this thing existed until I noticed the glovebox was opening way too fast. On mine the whole gear assembly had popped out of it's mount, just had to put it back and twist it, then pop the gear back in and carefully slot the bar back through. Thanks!
TheRaptor660ccs - You're welcome, glad I could help.
Man, you are a life saver! While installing a new radio into my Passat B8 and removing the glovebox probably i lost thig thing. Spent hours searching for the solution, and just before i went to the dealership and bought the full assembly, i saw this video. I will try to find this now. THANKS!
Thank you and good luck with it!

Thx man I was changing my cabin air filter and I accidental pushed too hard popping it out of the damper. This calms me down knowing it wasn't something bad that I broke.
Tito Lopez - I'm glad that you found my video. No need to panic, haha.
Thank you man, You’ve saved me with this video!!!!
Glad you found it! You're welcome.
Thank god I found this video! All other video is about removing it..
I'm glad that I could help.
I, like just about everyone else changing the cabin air filter for the first time, thought I had broken this little mechanism. Thanks for the fix!!! VW should really consider re-engineering this piece. What a pain in the ass!
I agree, it is a poor design.
Saved my life bro thanks
You're welcome! Glad you found the video.
Thanks so much. I left it broken for a while and I finally fixed it

LIFE SAVER THANK YOU
You're welcome! Glad you found the video.
The holder for my gear is moving around - should it be like that or should be steady . Thanks for useful video
The holder is moving around? Does the glove box open and close smoothly?
@@Corysdiyauto thanks for taking time to reply ; the glove box opens and closes smoothly with small loads - but with glove box being full (car manual ) it falls down rapidly
@@chaledrashwan4744 - It shouldn't fall down rapidly. There's something wrong with your dampening mechanism. You don't have that much weight in there.
You are a legend
Thanks!
Thanks! It helped me.
Carlitos 1999 - Glad I could help.
Changed my air filter myself for the first time today (first time had done by dealer). I noticed the arm but the cog and the bracket are nonexistent, so there's no where for the arm to slide back into. Is it possible it came like this? If not, either the dealer messed up when they serviced it or I didn't hear it fall into the void when I opened the glovebox. Chances of the dealer fixing this under warranty?
I would call the dealership and ask them first. Someone must have taken the bracket out and never reinstalled it. I am pretty sure that you can order a new bracket and cog if you want to. This is why I like to do the work myself because I know that it's getting done right.
ギアが外れてどうしようかと思ってました。解決しました。ありがとう。
You're welcome.
thank you so much!!!❤❤❤
You're welcome!!
OH SHOOT! I found this gear the other day and thought it was part of the venting system. Damn. Now what is going to explain the random lack of blowing from the vents?
Check your cabin air filter!
Thank you !!
You're welcome!
LEGEND
Saved me $90 the dealer wanted to charge me for the entire assembly smh
thank you thank you thank you!!
Glad I could help!
I was able to reassemble the gear and the arm, but where/what does the end attach to on the other side? That’s the only part of the video you don’t show😮. I see there’s a a slit but not sure how to fit the stationary wheel into that slot.
Thanks!
I just figured it out.
Thanks for a great video!
I'm happy to hear that. I was in the middle of trying to figure out what you meant, haha.
Dude, Thanks
You're welcome
Anybody know why there is what seems like a wire and a switch located on that housing??
Christian Lund - That switch activates the light in the glove box when the glove box door is opened.

You're welcome
I have lost that little gear thing... shoud I buy the new one? What is the meaning of that gear mechanism? Can it be without it? Thanks!
Sorry to hear that. It's up to you if you want it bad enough or not? You don't absolutely need it, no. That gear is part of the damper mechanism which eases the fall of the glove box door when opening. If you don't have that gear in place, the glove box door will just fall right open immediately until it hits the stops on either side.
Wow answer in like few minutes! You are great!! Big big respect for you!! Soo it is not something important at all, let's say🤣. Thank you very much once again!
@@hawk3714 - You're welcome and good luck to you!
What about the smaller gear? I had 2.
I only ever dealt with the one as shown in the video.
I did the same thing but now it won’t fully close
Try to take it out again and start over. Hopefully you can get it.
@@Corysdiyauto I removed the whole part with the damper every works it stays in place but the box won’t close completely
Are the stops holding it from closing?
Couldn’t believe when mine popped out
Shouldn’t it open softly?
Yes it should open softly or slowly and not just fall until it hits the stops.
Where to by wheel. I lost it
impeRAtoR28161621 - Here's a link to buy the whole assembly with the gear. www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/glove-box-brake/5g1858309/
@@Corysdiyauto thanks! I saw which is part number there and buy cheaper elsewhere
Oh brother you have saved me one embarrassing admission to my sister's boyfriend!
"Sure, I'll have the job done in 2 minutes for you!" I said...
Thank you!!!
Glad I could help you.
