You missed a key feature of WAP 5 and WAP 7, which is their HOG (Head On Generation) capabilities, eliminating the need for a diesel generator car for LHB coaches.

It is not mere gear ratio that was changed from WAG9 to bring in WAP7. Some crucial software and firmware changes were made at CLW. It was at power electronics level. I am basing this on a write up by the team lead Mr. Sujeet Mishra. They risked OEM Warranty.

WAP 7 produces more torque than WAP 5 because of the Co-Co configuration. The tractive effort of WAP 7= 322.4 kN (72,500 lbf). The tractive effort of WAP 5= 258 kN (58,000 lbf). So more torque = Faster acceleration.
