When I was an undergraduate I asked a classmate of mine if he were going to participate in the University class ring. He looked at me and said why should I that is so high school. I looked at him and said the class ring is more University than it ever was high School. I explained to him that the first institution to offer a class ring was the military academy at West point in 1835. I further explained to him that the first yearbook was more of a pamphlet from Yale University in the 1800s. I explained to him that the cap and gown commencement ceremonies came from European universities that were established a thousand years or more ago. I explained to him that the homecoming tradition began at a university in the early 1900s. Baylor makes the claim as well as another University or two. Additionally, the Letterman's jacket is also a university tradition. When you letter or make varsity you are given a jacket. All of these University traditions have been hijacked by high schools to the point where when you reach the university, the student is no longer interested. When you have mothers insisting that they're preschoolers wear a cap and gown and graduate from preschool by the time the child gets to high school. He's already had a graduation from preschool elementary Middle School and by the time he reaches high school he figures. This is the last one he's going to participate in. So no the class ring is not so high school. It is so University. Unfortunately, high schools have done quite a bit to overuse University traditions.
