To black out the doors on the fridge you can very simply just tape cardboard on the doors. You probably get quite a lot of cardboard boxes when ordering things, just cut them into big sheets. 🐍😊
Good idea. Aluminum foil would work well too.
They could also paint the insides of the windows black or another color. No need for the windows anyway.
@@Jessie91J Yes, unless they want to use the fridge for other things during the year where windows might be good.
Magnets with strong self-adhesive backing might be the order of the day. Stick some to the door, stick some to the sheets. Play your cards right and you might be able to use the same sheets for other purposes (e.g. indigo snakes). If the magnets don't stick to the door or sheets, possibly a steel strip would stick better. If nothing's sticking to the sheets, it might be possible to fix something to it by sewing it on. Punching holes in a steel strip and sewing through them is one example. It might be possible to get a magnet with a hole in the centre, which could be sewn through as well.
Self adhesive blackboard/whiteboard, directly on the windows, inside as well if needed.
It would also serve as a memo board!
to black out the fridge doors, if you wanna stick with fabric, you can use velcro to attach them to the fridge door. you can just buy velcro tape and use fabric glue to make it more secure on to the fabric. it can even work with the strips, just velcro those together and ve;cro the whole thing on to the fridge door. then when you wanna use them on the indigo cages again you can also attach velcro on their cages, that way it's multi-purpose.
Aluminum foil would work well too
I was going to suggest velcro as well
They could also sew the velcro onto the fabric for a bit better durability. But that’s a smart idea!
Whoops wish I saw this before I recommended the same thing. Anyway Boosting!
I think they sell blackout curtains with magnets in them or those blackout curtains they use in jail to cover up the windows on cells

I was nervous at just the thought of putting the snakes in the fridge. How much air do they need?
@@phoebebaker1575 people usually check in on their snakes, also brumation slows everything down so significantly that they don’t need as much air
Yeah hahaha😂
This is so exciting! Brumation means that the new breeding season will be coming soon! And then pairing videos! And the egg videos! And then baby videos! It's such a fun cycle!
I just went to snake discovery today, and it was even better than I imagined! The workers were so nice, and All of the work you guys put in really payed off! Keep doing what you are doing!

Me and my sister plan on going in January,
I found perfect way to make my snakes dark. I bought black and white reflection foil for plants. Its purpose is to keep the most of light inside of plant build so the other side is also usable to make things dark. I tried it this year for brumation and everything is nice and dark inside :) I think it would be easy to stick it to the doors on your incubation station :D
Simple white paint reflects wayyyy more light than that silver foil stuff

Guys, an idea for the curtains on the fridge is to use baby travel blackout curtains. They are waterproof and use suction cups to stick to the doors. I use them for our kids bedrooms and they're brilliant. X
You know what this means, right, that they changed houses? (And ostensibly sold the old one.) Someone out there is now living in a room... that used to belong to an alligator. XD
I was thinking the same thing! It's kinda sad in a weird way though, like I feel like I know that house now from the old videos.
@@robinsonrom Yes, it IS sad. Maybe they "traded up" now that they have big commercial enterprise. I find that rather sad, too.
I have to disagree that they have a “big” commercial enterprise, it’s still just the two them and a handful of staff at one location. That’s still considered a small business even including the channel. And people buy and sell houses all the time for a number of reasons and since they haven’t talked about why the moved on the channel (and they are not obligated to) there are probably dozens of good reasons why they sold the old house, not just because they “traded up”. But even if they had “traded up” I see no problem with that for people who have genuinely worked their butts off as much as Emily and Ed have to build up their business. Yes there is some nostalgia attached to the old house, and you’re allowed to miss it, but Emily and Ed have graciously allowed us into their lives by creating these videos and as viewers we should respect the decisions they make for their own personal reasons
@@christinalee6091 they actually have talked a bit about why they were moving! They moved closer to the facility because before I think they had like a 40-minute drive. They have also said they probably won't do any house tours or anything because it doesn't fit the same of the channel and isn't really needed but in there Thanksgiving video they were in their new kitchen :)
@@shinyriolu5879 They aren't doing house tours because they don't want us poor people to see the rich new lifestyle they participate in.
For trying to keep the dark tarps on the fridge, I'd suggest Velcro! Depending on what the fabric is made of, you might even only need the ruff side! But if not, there is always a small bit of fabric glue and getting the other side to stick on.
Good idea! I second option is to rivet a stainless steel strip to the top of the door for magnets if the velcro doesn't work.
Was about to suggest that. You can get heavy duty Velcro rated for heavier weight to make sure the fabric stays put.
Yep! That's what my suggestion was going to be as well! The extra wide velcro taped for heavy fabric works work well
@@Wolfepup23 Riveting might ruin the insulation or integrity of the doors, not to mention voiding the warranty. I second the Velcro!
you actually can buy full rolls of velcro with the rough and soft sides, with adhesive backing. Very durable and incredibly useful
Maybe they could use Velcro for the fridge? Like line the doors and then line the fabric (might have to stitch it to the fabric) and then stick them together? So the doors still function and it stays dark.

Kids, never step into any empty fridge because if you can't get out, you can suffocate.
This happened to a friend's grandson who climbed into an abandoned fridge to play at hiding, nobody knew where he was, nobody could hear him and by the time someone did he sadly had passed away.
YOU GOT RID OF THE FUN HOW COULD YOU LITTLE B###
Remember kids (and stupid teens/adults who think its safe) ..dont do an emily and go into any fridge
Brumation already?? I could've sworn we just finished all the egg videos can't wait for the new egg season!!
We did just finish all the egg videos, they had a lot.
Brumation caught me off guard too. I'm like, "where did the time go?"
Can't wait for all the new baby sneks
I was surprised they put OmNomlette with the other ladies haha. She's been in isolation since the egg brunch.
Actually didn't she have a clutch this last year that she DIDN'T eat? 😂
for the fridge: black-core foam core, velcro 3m strips on the inside of the glass, so you can re-use the same foam core each year. its super light weight and easy to cut to size, and should be black-out (unlike white-core, which isn't). any of your signage friends should have some or know where to find some locally if your local craft/hobby store doesn't keep any in stock!
I hope they see this, I agree that this would be a great solution! Regular tape might not have worked but the sticky stuff on velcro strips is super heavy duty, I bet it would hold on to the glass just fine
excellent idea. Plenty of people are recommending velcro, but I have doubts that'd stick very well to the fridge under the weight of the fabric. Foam is light enough for the velcro to work
With foam core, they could just use command strips and not have to worry about Velcro!
@@melissajarvis4829 yes, but they might want to be able to reuse the foam on other cages and continually removing command strips could damage the foam. Doing the velcro strips means they could velcro the panels onto different cages as needed.
You could use black chalk paint on the windows to black them out, which would also give you a place to take notes about any issues or certain Snakes you may have had to check on more frequently.
Also, for the Brumation Station logo, find someone with a Cricut machine and you'll have an awesome graphic printed on vinyl with a sticky backing. If the person's really good, they may be able to print the train, tracks and snakes separately so you could stick them up however you please. I think they even have some that's removable and reusable.
And actually, the vinyl sheets could be an excellent way to black out the windows! You could put a sheet on the inside of the doors, outside of the doors, or even both! Plus, you could make liftable "flaps" to use for peeking inside so you wouldn't have to open the doors every time you want to check on your snoozing snakes. 🤘🏻😊💕
ETA: Using the vinyl, you'd be able to use dry erase markers to make notes on it I believe. You may want to test that before going gung-ho, though. 😅
Love the male snakes trying to breed each other. It seems like they don't care as long as it moves. XD

Since you are not just painting the doors I guess the point is to be able to see thru them, so
I recommend putting a curtain rod and hang blackout curtains, perhaps even a roll-up one since that would save on space.
I was thinking the same thing but with pbc pipes wrapped around the top and bottom and the black material used like a curtain and just clipped together where they meet so you an either slide it or just unclip the two you need. And if you make the pipe small enough around you could get as close to the metal as possible to eliminate any little slips of light getting in.
You could always paint the doors with a few layers, and if you do, may I suggest: calk-board paint for extra shenanigans.
When Emily climbed into the fridge and couldn’t open it from inside? Reminded me that late 50s and 60s there was a safety drive that old fridges had to have doors removed before trashing to prevent kids getting locked in while playing, then suffocating. So then I thought, how will the snakes get enough oxygen with doors hermetically sealed? I worry a lot.
They're not going to be locked in for the whole 3 months, people will be checking on them to make sure all's good and they're not losing weight
Reptiles also slow down their breathing alot when they do this. They need significantly less oxygen which is why some turtles are perfectly fine being trapped under ice in bodies of water.
Idk why I'm saying this but, Emily and ed, you guys helped me overcome my fear of spiders and snakes! I love your channel so much!
I used to not like snakes but then started watching them and their baby snake hatching videos about 4 years ago and I fell in love with snakes. I now have a ball python after years of convincing my parents

Have you thought of window cling vinyl? Or the easy remove contact paper?
Also, I was beginning to wonder how on earth you’d tell all the similar ones apart- right before Emily said they took pics with tags as a just in case. Y’all are consistently awesome!!!
I came here to suggest window cling as well. Commenting to boost your suggestion so they hopefully see it!
Vinyl was my thought too.
I'm so excited for more axanthics to be produced! It's my favorite single gene in hognoses
You might be able to use either a window tint/ some sort of window sticker from like amazon or home depot for the glass doors. To keep most if not all light out. I think it depends on what you can find though.
It is fascinating getting to see the inner workings of your snakelet mill
Interesting choice of words. Things have changed at Snake Discovery. And what about the rodent-breeding mill, to feed all of them? I do like "Rescue Island."
I love seeing all the different morphs of the hognoses together. It really shows off their patterns.
Man, it feels like yesterday when they went into brumation. I can't believe how fast the year moved by.
I love how even while cranky the snakes are cute
ikr ❤
I deeply appreciate the giant googly eyes on the more normal fridge back there
Still keep the fabric covers but use velcro strips to attach them to the fridge and maybe cut out a little "peekaboo" window which can then be covered with a velcro patch 👀🐍
Velcro with the sticky backing might work for the drapes on the doors, if you don't mind having a velcro strip glued to your fridge doors permanently.
You guys can use black contact paper for the doors, it’s easy to remove if you don’t want it there permanently? Just a thought! :)
Cool solution! Would it be a good idea to add a CO2, O2, and temperature alarm for it? I find myself wondering if there's sufficient airflow to keep the air fresh.
I had a similar thought. It would be a good idea to have alarms on this refrigerator. Sometimes, thermostats fail. I had a thermostat fail on a refrigerator once; it got stuck, and the refrigerator kept getting colder and colder until a big block of ice formed in the back. Allowing food or drinks to get a bit too cold isn't usually a big deal, but allowing the snakes to get too cold would be a disaster.
Fingers crossed you have enough patreon subscribers and zoo visitors to one day get a WALK IN freezer!!! How much easier would that make life for brumation lol. Im so proud of you guys. I love when things get better for you. I can’t wait to see the warehouse come along as well.
Hi! Can you please give an update on your DeKay's Brown snakes?
I love the Pokémon hide in one of the hognose bins! So cute ❤
I love this sooo much because it means their business is so profitable they can do this in only their 2nd year! Love to see it. They really earned it. 💚🐍
Really awesome that you have a fridge for them now! I would suggest black out vinyl for the doors. It is easy to put on and easy to take off if you need to. It can also come in some patterns so it can be pretty too! Take it from someone who works night shift, black out vinyl is great.
So happy to see Brad healed up well ♥️ It's so strange seeing a wound on a snake like that... I was sure it looked worse than it was, but still comforting to see she's healed well.
I can see you guys are going to need a small walk-in fridge built for this. If not enough room here then perhaps at the warehouse. It was fun to see all the variations together!
Since the doors are glass you could just use window vinyls that are blackout. You dampen them, stick them on, cut to size, and they stick via static. Completely removable without consequences and the are super easy to install/replace. That way you aren't messing with the doors opening and closing too. They are on amazon and are usually used for privacy in rentals. I have them on all my 1st floor windows.
Does the fridge bring in fresh air? Usually you have to open up the door to circulate air. Like with a wine cooler

You should check out Elemental Machines! We use them to monitor fridges and freezers in the lab world where $$$ reagents need specific temps. Good way to monitor temps and get alerts when something goes wrong.

Worker of Snake Discovery: And in this fridge is where we keep our brumating snakes....as well as a wild Emily...
Guests: Ooh...neat!
Emily: Wait...im not a snake..!
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but could you use the blackout privacy window film for the fridge doors? Great video!
Good idea
Yeah thats what I was thinking. Just deep dark window tinting
Those do work well for general light but it's not "I'm a snake that burrowed underground where there's no light" middle of winter dark.
If this "fridge" is going to be permanently used as a brumation station, maybe you can just get a room darkening film for windows? I have some for my bedroom windows and I love it! You can put a sheet on either side (inside and outside) to double up and make it even darker!
great idea!
I just saw this video, and seeing the sheer range of colours and patterns of the male hognoses is amazing.
Is there enough air exchange to get a good oxygen supply for all of them?
Edit; you could get magnet strips and glue them along the top of each door :)
for attaching the door cover, you could use velcro tape. we used that in handbell choir to attach table skirts to our tables and it stayed put really well.
I’ve got a feeling that this breeding season will be extra special/exciting!
You can always use a blackout window film and it should look sleek and block out all the light! Best part is it doesn’t damage the glass if you wanted to take it off in the future and you can add stickers on top of it
my night is 100% better when there’s a new snake discovery video. happy new year everyone💚
ps: will you ever posted the incubator video?
Emily said recently that she was going to post the incubator video soon so it's coming

@@SrslyBored1 One day!!
Mod-Podge black fabric to the windows! Removable if you need it to be but won’t fall off! Do one layer on the inside and one layer on the outside. Think wallpaper! Super easy and light blocking.
I suggest using velcro tape that has adhesive on one side around the glass of each door. Then you can attach the other side of the velcro to whatever you want to use such as cardboard, paper or the fabric. You will then be able to easily take it on and off when you still want to see through the doors. It just looks more professional then just taping things to the doors.
You can use sticky back magnetic strips and then use a magnetic sheet, or a regular sheet with more strips on it.
I was just wandering about air flow as a fridge is designed to be airtight to aid in food preservation
You should try blackout decals! They cling to the doors, are removable, and reusable. Super easy!
I’d use Velcro for the covers
One way to attach the fabric could be to use velcro, one side attached to the doors and the other sewn onto the fabric. That way you could keep it quite light free
Have you guys looked into florist coolers? (Not sure if that's what that cooler is) You can get a pretty decent sized walk in that would be around that temp range! Might be expensive tho, I haven't shopped for one in a while.
You could superglue adhesive 1+quarter inch wide velro tape to the door frames (the section that surrounds the glass) then make panels of fabric that are the same size with velcro sewn on around the edges.
get blackout curtains they come in pairs. get a metal adhesive strip from the car parts place, can place 1 on the top of the doors, and one on the curtains, snap them together
There's adhesive chalkboard wallpaper you could stick on the door. That way, you could also doodle on the doors while the snakes brumate 😊
Can We just appreciate the time and effort that they put in these amazing videos❤
If you needed something to cover the fridge doors and you didn't mind not being able to peek in without opening the doors, you could you the blackout window cling stuff that just needs water to stick to glass, or cover up some of it with that and use the fabric to make a window you can flip up to look into the fridge!
Happy New Years Ed and Emily! (And all the snakes and reptiles too)❤❤❤
I am sad to see last year’s baby season end, snake discovery had such a successful/ crazy year! Wish you guys lots of luck!
try velcro strips, sew it on the fabric and stick it to the unit on the other side for the curtains.
You can get black out window cling that doesn't leave sticky stuff behind! That would work really well for the door!
I don't know why, but when waffle came onto screen I thought, ' They should get a boy named chicken and make chicken and waffle babehs'
Velcro strips with adhesive on the back. Sew the other side to the curtains, top and bottom. Easy to put on and easy to remove.
I’ve only seen this done with turtles!! It’s always wild to remember that some animals can just hang out in a fridge for winter. Love these videos 💖💘💝!!
I think there are stick on vinyl blackout sheets you could get that you can cut to the dimensions of the fridge windows. Might be better than fabric.
Maybe you can use velcro strips to hold up the drapes?
Removable vinyl panels on the doors could work (and say "Brumation Station!") or you could sandwich magnetic pull across the glass with rare earth magnets on the inside and outside to hold up your choice of blackout material.
I never get to see a snake discovery video as soon as it comes out, when it comes out late. So I’m happy right now.
For blocking out the light I would do a double application of the darkest window tint you can find 5% doubled up should be darn near pitch black. It wouldn’t affect how the doors work and there will be no risk of the cover falling off if someone bumps it. And it will look nice and clean add a vinyl decal while your at it. Which is another option. You could try the cricket vinyl rolls in black or holographic Chrome for a fancier look! Both should be solid enough to not transfer much of any light through it.
What about contact paper? You don't need to take it off because its their brumation home. Then you don't have to figure out something every single time. They make black out contact paper I believe :)
A nice easy option would be elastic on a blackout sheet - kind of like a fitted bed sheet, but sized to the door. It wouldn’t be too hard to make for anyone with a sewing machine.
This might be a stupid question, but do you measure the oxygen in the fridge as well?
My question too!
Not a stupid question.
Well keep in mind if they open the door briefly every few days there will be plenty. It's actually a pretty common practice.
Adam from WWR incubated and brumates in drink coolers, so every other day or so he just opens and closes the lid.
I bought some adhesive black vinyl that I used to black out the glass doors on a cabinet I bought. You can get that stuff in rolls off the internet. It goes on really well if you just spray the glass with some water and use a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles!
I can make a vinyl decal like that for your fridge! Where I work we do graphic design and make decals and signs and things!
Such a fun seasonal video! I love to see them all together like this.
Emily: *enters the fridge*
My claustrophobia: 👁👄👁
Regarding "how do we hang the blackout curtains?"
Take a magnet down to the office supply store and test rulers till you find the one that is magnetic
Buy 2 for each door, and a nice big tube of silicone caulk.
Stick the rulers to the metal part of the doors, using the silicone caulk. I say put it on the metal, because putting the curtain on the glass would prob'ly make things a bit too up and down for cleaning.
Give it plenty of time to cure, then put the curtains up, popping the magnets onto the rulers to hold the curtains
Just a note, I would get some of those Niobium magnets, to make sure those curtains stay put
...OR...you could just paint the glass of the windows on the inside
I'm wondering if they still have the Dekays snakes and if they need to brumate
I recommend command hook clips with glue strips on the back for holding the fabric to the front of the fridge.
So awesome! Have you thought about window cling or film? It would be removable if you ever wanted to remove it but it also would keep everything pretty dark in there if you get the black out. Loved seeing all the snakes 🥰
When I worked overnights I had these blackout curtains that were like construction paper, and folded accordion style? I flattened them out and taped them down so the sun wouldn’t get thru the sides. Worked really well. Got them off Amazon, they were not too much.
As a chef...I've gotten stuck in a new fridge out of curiosity 🙃 it happens 😅
Gotten stuck or were locked in?
Pls do never end this channel 🙏 u guys are 👍 GREAT
